Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: All was well 'til the gas canister exploded ... ... on a tiny island, fairly dry for the tropics, with no fire extinguishers, very few spigots, no long hoses, and everything's made of thatch and wood. How is it I run away to someplace where nothing happens, and to do nothing, and high adventure follows me wherever I go? Just spent 2 1/2 hours fighting a huge fire by hand. I'm pretty sure I haven't done that before. I think I'd remember. So it was basically me and a few dozen folks, anyone with a conscience on that side of the island at the time, creating bucket brigades, hauling water up from the ocean in any kind of container available ... I had no idea HOW MUCH WATER it takes to put out a fire, especially when it's spreading and there's a high wind, and to douse all the buildings of the adjacent properties (one of which was my bungalows hotel). Of course, this happened after dark. I was not this tired after any race, I think. Thank God no one was hurt. A few cuts, scrapes, raw hands, bruises, etc. and a holidaying doctor got O2 tanks from divers and treated people with smoke inhalation. I made out okay; extremely stuffy nose and keep hacking up stuff, but early on I pulled my panties off, dunked 'em in a bucket, and wore 'em on my face. Hey, you know it's a great night when you wind up with wet ripped panties on your face!!! There was also an Australian firefighter who managed the center scene, an ER nurse who relayed instructions outward in English and managed the surroundings, and me, the Indonesian interpreter, and apparently, water carrier extraordinaire Other amazing characters rose to the occasion in various ways as well. And we did it all in flipflops or barefoot, on soft sand, coral, jungle-type floor, mud, debris ... Not many people were willing to work right at the fire, which I understand. We needed an awful lot of hands to dampen all the surrounding buildings as well. A lot of water came through the bucket brigades but we, I as well, hauled up giant garbage bins (no wheels, wouldn'ta helped) of seawater up from the ocean through the soft sand right to the flames. We carried, dragged, and passed literally TONS of water, each of us. We also carried all the large gas canisters out of the area ... everything here is powered by gas, including electricity by generators, so there were a helluva lot of them to take far from the site. They weigh about 70 kilos each. A few of the Indonesian guys couldn't believe how much water I could carry at a run. I think I am the most surprised of all. I've been very ill and out of shape for this last year, but apparently residual fitness + adrenaline go a long way. I also look very fat to them. The guys nicknamed me Palawan Paling Kuat, which sounds wonderful, and it translates "Hero Most Strong." I laughed. Everyone who pitched in, especially those near the fire and who were able to give the whole time, is a hero. I do have two major resentments. 1. The azzhat who stole my headlamp last night robbed a courageous bunch of people of a resource that was desperately needed today. There were very few torches to go around tonight and extra hands to hold them. 2. There were quite also a few dozen people who just stood around and despite being specifically directed ('please stand here and pass an empty bucket back') refused to help. Some were taking pictures. At this moment I choose to believe every single one of them, men included, must have been pregnant. Or they are seriously disabled in a way not obvious (I suspect mental/social disability, but that's just me). |

TW Aw T-Geeze ... you may be a piglet but I am an attention hog and you just made me squeeeeeeeal Yah ... sorry if it wasn't clear, I just kind of jumbled a post together from what I remembered. A gas canister exploded DURING the fire. No one was seriously hurt from that, nor from fighting the fire. It was KA RAZY seeing, and hearing, and feeling a building blow up from the inside, though. No one is quite sure how it started. Everyone on this island smokes and just flicks butts everywhere, so who knows, or it could have been something completely different.
Just to be clear--it's not that anyone cared so much about the buildings and properties, even though of course it would be good to save them, and in particular perhaps the one that had my stuff in it (ha ha), but it's that this island is a tinderbox with no place for the people on it to go. Oh, and PAUL, DON'T FREAK OUT ... Stephanie was on the other side of the island when all this was going on. She is safe and sound. Well, actually, I kinda left her at this Irish bar with her diving group, so who knows what else might happen, but I'm pretty sure she's fine. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: All was well 'til the gas canister exploded ... Went back and took pictures of the carnage today. I thought maybe it was worse in my head than it really was, but I was shocked at how the place looked. Four pretty well burned multi-room structures and one nicely singed one whose roof burned off. I still do not know how we did it, as well as completely watering all the buildings on surrounding properties. Check out the three thatched bungalows below, just waiting to fry--there were ten of them on the adjacent property on that one side (many other similar structures on the properties on the other sides).
Obviously most of this building caught fire, but those are some HUGE melted water tanks. |
