Subject: I need a 2nd job- any ideas?

I have expensive hobbies and a love of money, so I have decided that I need a 2nd job (or some other way to make a little extra cash). Here's my background....

24, female, married, no kids, B.S. degree, currently work for an insurance company M-F, home around 4:45 every day.

Any (serious) suggestions welcome!

I've seen those ads where you can be part of a phone answering service, taking calls at a certain time of the day.  I think it tends to work better for those that can allocate late nights to it.  Someone posted a thread on it a while back.

What about working part time at a LBS, running or tri store?  Or....GNC, or at a local gym?

If I were looking for a second job, I would try to get in to one of the specialty running stores or the LBS, or maybe even the tri store (if you have one). I mean, why not put your hobbies and work life together? Probably doesn't pay that great, but wouldn't it be cool to hang out in that environment all day? I'm pretty sure these places need extra help on the weekends. You could put in some hours on the weekends and probably still have time for all your workouts.

I'm considering taking a position with the local tri event company. They don't pay in cash, but they also have an adventure travel division so they give you a free trip to Thailand, along with all the shwag, race vouchers, and more. It's about 2 weekend days a month for 6-8 hours a day Feb-Oct. Not a bad deal.

I was thinking retail, but I don't know if they would want someone with limited hours. I was thinking one weeknight and one weekend day.

If your expensive hobbies are important enough to get a second job, why not look at cutting out expenses in your life that are not as important.

Such as cable, eating out a lot, high car payments (i.e. selling it and buying a cheaper car), clothes budget, gas (ride your bike to work if you don't already), etc.

It is amazing how much you can save with changing a few things. My wife and I have been trying to budget and cut out things so that we can save more for whatever (college fund, give to charities, new bike, etc). Most of what we are doing comes from the book Finacial Peace by Dave Ramsey.

Other suggestions have been good. Work for a store that is hobby related. You will get to learn more about the stuff you like, plus you would get discounts.

Ebay/Garage sale. Selling your old equipment on forum such as this or on Ebay can generate quite a bit of money.

Have fun with your hobbies, but don't work too much where you can't do them.

If you are really serious about tris, you become a tri/bike/running coach. It would help others, get you focused and more informed, and could make you some extra cash.

Retail is a good option.  Most people who work part time also have limited hours.  Plus, most places offer employee discounts.  If you could get a job at a hobby-related store, it would help reduce cost.

I agree with the bartending. I did it for years and still pick up the occasional shift.

Nannying or babysitting's not a bad idea either. Go to one of the high-end services -- you can generally make twice what you would retail and you can pick your hours.

I worked a second job at a bookstore for a while. Didn't really improve my cash-flow, but I've got some great books. Working at the LBS/LTS/running shop may be the same for you.

Creative? Decorating, floral arrangments, etc.

Diligent? Like to paint? Setting yourself up as an interior paint contractor. Bid on jobs as your schedule permits. Hang wallpaper. (People who are good at this can make $$$$$$$ 'cause it's far cheaper than marriage counseling.)

BS & Insurance? What would it take to become a CFA/CPA/??? and open your own practice?

Part-time bookkeeper. Plenty of small businesses that need someone for a few hours a month.

Not a long term solution, but sell all the stuff you don't want/need on Ebay.  I was amazed at what some people were willing to pay for some of my c$$p and and my kids c%%p.

I know you hate change But, seriously, if I were you I'd look for a better full-time job. The place you are working now is known for low-balling "entry level" software professionals. And, if you find the right place, you may get a more flexible schedule.

Really, with a year under your belt already, you can get more money!

How many hours do you think you can work on your 2nd job? I mean, you might have no time left for your expensive hobby and ended up with only your love for money.

Is that a job offer Rob??? I'd make a great secretary and I wouldn't bring in any sweets to the office.

I do house and pet-sit already, I sell stuff on Ebay, and I even sell produce to my co-workers in season (I live on a farm and my husband is a farmer). I'm thinking of selling my snowboard gear since this winter has absolutely sucked for snowboarding. I was considering babysitting since I could make my own hours, but I don't know anyone with kids!

Say it aint' so!

As far as the job offer: Email me your resume and I'll submit it for you. This isn't a bad place to work... I just hate my current projects. (And, as you know, it's very convenient to the swim center--I went at lunch today --and we have fairly flexible hours. Not to mention you could run/ride/walk to work then use the FREE fitness center to clean up, after hitting the weights that is!!!)

If you like doing research and are financially inclined. You might want to look into starting to invest.

It's a lot of work, stress, and time. But there is a lot money to be made, and lost sometimes.

I don't think a retail job will be helpfull at supporting your hobbies.
