molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() even though we went to the children's ER, which tends to be much much faster, we were still there for a few hours. we thought ella's arm was broken after a little accident on the playground. one of her classmates landed on her coming down the slide. still not sure if she was trying to go up the slide, was at the bottom of the slide, or what. all i know is that she was in tears when bill picked her up shortly after the accident happened, and she was cradling her arm and wouldn't let me touch it. she's had almost as many xrays as me now. and she's the cautious one! its a miracle that fiona hasn't landed herself in the ER yet. anyway, it was luckily NOT broken, but she did have a nurse maid elbow (partially dislocated), and a bit of a sprained wrist. poor kid. i'm just happy its not broken. my poor baby. she was so brave. everyone think quick healing thoughts for her so she can do her fun run on sunday, and play in the snow some more before it melts! |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh I'm so sorry for the little one! Being a mother is so hard! My mother was recently reminding me that my sister cracked her head open (her expression) twice and broke her collar bone once by the time she was 6. Of course, she's the sister that will do anything for attention... Looking back on it, I don't know how my mom didn't go nuts or try to keep us sheltered, quiet and still - instead she was always telling us to go outside and play. Hope Ella is feeling better. Did the doc write a rx for rocky road ice cream? I hear that is highly effective in treating boo-boos. |

Wife, Mother, Friend.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() my son broke both arms in the time span of 11 months. He was 4/5 at the time. The second time we didnt' even bother going to the ER, pumped him full of tylenol and went to ortho in the morning. It was a big waste of time that first time- four hour wait, xrays, wait some more, oh, it's broken. They wrapped it in an ACE bandage and told us to call an ortho for a cast. Of course we've also had to go for stitches, etc. No pokes in the eye yet. Gosh, Comet!! feel better, little one! Is she milking it? |

Your mom was sending you out to play for HER benefit, not yours. Autumn, I hope she's better soon. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() we try and teach the girls that anything worth doing may involve a few bumps and bruises along the way. I have to say, Autumn, that's just about the most fantastic thing I've heard a parent say! That's terrific! I hope your girl gets back up to full speed soon. I grew up in the school of hard knocks myself - broke my arm 3 different times growing up. Let's see - the first broken bone was falling out of a tree, the second was soccer I believe, and the final was skateboarding! Bumps and bruises indeed! |

When the arm is bent like an accordian, that's a good time to go to the ER. Or if they are not using it. For what it's worth, I've never treated any break that I can think of with an ace wrap. She should feel better about her arm a lot sooner than you will, mom! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awww. Glad it's not a break, and I hope she and you feel better soon! I agree with your 'anything worth doing will cause bumps and bruises' parenting philosophy. I also lived it as a child--dislocated arm, two 'cracked open' head incidents, stitches, lots of stitches. And from what I remember, it was all worth it.

molto veloce mama![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() thanks for all the well wishes. breaks my heart, but she's NOT okay this morning. she's still in a lot of pain, so we're getting copies of the ER xrays and bringing her to our regular ped at lunch time. the ER doc said that w/ a nursemaid elbow, once its back in joint, it feels better. having had a broken and dislocated elbow i know that having and joint back into joint does cut back on the pain quite a bit. with ella, it believe it was a nurse maid elbow, since the doc said she could feel it pop back into joint, but i think ella also has a badly sprained wrist...or something. she need follow up because it is REALLY hurting her. my dad is a doc, my mil an rn, and i have a great deal of respect for medicine and those who practice it. it is, however, not a perfect art. the doc yesterday seemed to think in a typically medical manner. problem A requires solution B for outcome C. she seemed annoyed that ella could still not touch her own nose with that arm after her elbow was back in joint. i know my child, if she could have done it, she would. she didn't because she was in PAIN. after reading about nurse maids last night, and from what the doc said. its pretty obvious that something else is going on. i just wish they would have looked more carefully in the nearly 4 hours we were in the ER. i didn't expect them to 'fix' her, but a little kid should not be suffering this much. ![]() luckily, we have a sling, so we secured her arm enough that she's fairly comfortable. she wants to go to school, which i'm nervous about, but bill will take her and then go pick up copies of the xrays. |

Cycling Guru![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Seeing little one's in pain is the absolute worst. When my oldest was about 2 we were reading books on the couch and he jumped off my lap to get another one ....... and fell right into one of the concrete bunnies that supported the glass coffee table we had. Gashed his skin open right above his left eye. My wife took care of stopping the blood as best as we could and I went upstairs to get what we needed to go to the ER ..... and bawled my eyes out for being the one who didn't stop him from getting hurt. We went to the hospital and having to deal with the little guy hurting so much and then they had to strap him down so they could put the stitches in was the worst thing that has happened with being a Dad so far ........ luckily he was okay and nothing was really damaged. But man that sucked! Hope your little one is taken care of and feels better!! For my boys there's nothing like mommy to snuggle and make things alright. |

Buttercup![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() True, Mike. And I'm really glad that's how my mother handled it. My neighbor, however, handles her own daughter much differently. No sports allowed - cuz she might get hurt. Oy! How is she going to learn to pick herself up if she won't allow her to fall down?!

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awwww, poor Ella. It sure is no fun to see little ones hurting. It hurts me and I don't even have little ones of my own. I hope she gets well soon and gets the treatment she needs. I, too, spent a lot of time in the ER as a kid. Cuts over both eyes, one with a rock sent flying by a homemade teeter-totter style launcher, one with a stethoscope flung by a playmate (no kidding, a freaking stethoscope). Stitches in the hands from a broken bottle (twice) and once from our ghetto swingset. Once for a nail through the foot. Once after falling and knocking out two teeth. And, finally, the pinnacle of them all, a cutting board to the head. I was about 5 years old and was in the kitchen. I bent over to pick something up and came up just as my dad was pulling out the cutting board. I caught the corner smack dab in the middle of the forehead and immediately, it began spouting blood like a fountain. I still remember watching the huge puddle of red accumulating on the hideous brown/orange/yellow lineoleum floor and splashing on the avocado green fridge. Funny that I was 19 years old before my first and only bone. I managed to break my hand playing mud football with my fraternity. And, heavens no, there was absolutely no alcohol involved whatsoever. Renee, my mom always used to tell us to "go play in traffic". You'd probably get sent to jail for that these days. She also let us (GASP!) ride bikes and rollerskates without helmets! Here's to cuts, bumps and bruises so that we have stories to tell our kids. Tom |

molto veloce mama![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() well, after a visit to the ped and more xrays (this time of her wrist), now its official - no broken bones! she does have a lot of swelling and is starting to show some bruising, so her doc recommended keeping it iced and in the sling for a couple more days. he was much more sensitive to her poor sore arm. we did get copies of the xrays. one shows us holding hands since that was the xray that hurt the most. poor kid. so, time for some chitty chitty bang bang and popcorn therapy after two afternoons at the doctors! |

Coach![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In defense of all things medical, some problems just need time to sort themselves out. If they had seen a fracture on the first film, obviously they would have treated it. Looking harder to see a fracture that isn't there won't help...but that doens't mean she won't still have some pain. I agree that all nursemaid's elbows I have seen & treated are better within about 5 minutes, using the arm normally, but that doesn't mean that your little one might not have had more soft tissue injury due to an unusual mechanism. So now you've seen an ER doc and a pediatrician. If she is still not improving, your next stop should be an orthopod. I hope she is feeling better, and if you can get ahold of one of those snoopy slings, she'll probably get better even faster. ![]() |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This reminds me of when I was a little one, ages 3-5 - would toss and turn and fall out of bed, dislocating my elbow- which would happen *often*. My folks got so sick of taking me to the emergency room, that the docs showed them how to put it back in themselves. Then when I fractured my shoulder at 7, my mom was so used to me getting hurt that she thought it wasn't too "serious" and tried teaching me lamaz (sp? those pregnancy exercises) breathing to get through the pain, thinking it would subside. After a few days of excruciating pain, I finally convinced her to take me to the doc - x-rays and a shoulder sling later...I still tease her about teaching me those breathing techniques when I was a kid with a shoulder fracture! ![]() Edited by mcarla 2006-03-17 7:07 PM |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It sounds like she was so brave! Quick healing to the little sweetie! ![]() When my daughter was 3 she broke her arm when she jumped out her bedroom window (2nd story!) pretending to be Buzz Lightyear! She still talks about it. (She'll be 6 next month.) We're so lucky that her arm is all she broke! My husband had just leaft for Japan early that morning, and I thought she was taking a nap because we had been up really early. Little did I know how busy she was in her room, trying to get her window open! Needless to say, all upstairs windows have locks. Edited by KSlostStar 2006-03-17 7:51 PM |

molto veloce mama![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oh my! thank goodness she was okay. ella landed herself in the ER last year for a CT scan last year after she 'fell' off the couch onto the coffee table. she fell asleep right away, then woke up and threw up, so off to the ER we went. it was just a mild concussion. when we were in the ER, she admitted to the nurse that she had actually been trying to fly, and have jumped off the top of the back of the couch! |
