Subject: RE: Vibram Five FingersAs someone previously mentioned, I read the book "Born to Run" also. I started running with minimal shoes 2 months ago. Not the fivefingers, but the cheapest water shoes I could find, some $19 speedos at the local swim shoppe. My $100 running shoes have been shelved - probably for good - maybe I'll use them to cut the grass in or something. I love running with the minimal shoes. I run mostly on trails and it feels much more natural. Even on the asphalt I was surprised how quickly I adapted. My calves and achilles still get sore after most runs but I have been slowly ramping up my mileage to where I was before I shelved my $100 Saucony's. I also bought me some $29 moccasins to wear during my work day to further build up my calves and achilles. It seems to be working. I guess the first thing I noticed (especially on the asphalt ) was the absence of the "jolt" to your body with every heel strike in the running shoes. I'm 45 and decided to thry this out to see if it would alleviate some ongoing knee pain I seem to have. That jury is still out on that but either way I doubt I'll go back to regular running shoes. My 16 year old son also started running in the water shoes and he has adapted very quickly and has shown great progress in his running posture and form. (Oh the magic of "youth" ) Now I am looking forward to Spring when Aldi, Walgreens and Target will start stocking the $6.99 water shoes once again. It's almost impossible - at least in southern Indiana - to find them in December. To those thinking about trying it out - get some cheap shoes first - We don't need $80-$120 shoes to run barefoot. |
