Member  131  |  Subject: How to fit two bikes in the back of an SUVProbably way TMI.... my wife and I were packing her SUV at 5:30 this AM for our indoor group training ride. Cold, snowy, and generally January Indianaish today. Thanks to the Share the Ride, we were putting in her 51 cm and my 58 cm and couldn't efficiently figure out a good way to do it, so I ended up putting the bike rack on my car and hanging my shiny new bike off the back, yes, in the snow (sigh) and we drove separately (was that a run on sentence or what!). So, what's the best way to put two bikes in the back of an SUV? She has an RX350 meaning pretty much a midsize. Yes, back seats were down, and no, we did not take off the front tires. Any thoughts or better yet pictures would be greatly appreciated! |

I'd put a blanket between them. Fit the tires and gear bag in around the bikes. I have put two bikes into the back seat of my 4-door pick up (a Dakota - midsize) this way, wth one being a 58 cm Roadie. Happy riding |

Seats folded down, and one of the bikes has to have both wheels off. Blanket in between. Bags of stuff, helmet, food, etc is squished in whatever leftover pocket of space is available. If I can do it in a tiny Mazda 3 (not the hatchback even) you've gotta be able to do it in an SUV!  |

Pro 6767 the Alabama part of Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: How to fit two bikes in the back of an SUV I've fit them in back of my Xterra by taking off the front wheels and loading them in with the back wheels against the driver's and passenger's seat respectively, no problem. The X had a bar you could install to lock the forks on, like a roof rack but on the inside. But I found it solved a problem I did not have. |

We don't remove the wheels and are too cheap to buy a rack. Back seats go down. One bike goes in front first, on its side with front wheel turned 90 degrees leaning against the front seats. The other bike goes in back wheel first, also on side, front wheel turned 90%. Be careful not to slam rear door on front wheel of second bike (needs adequate clearance), or get gears/chains entangled when decoupling. Plenty of room back there for other gear/luggage--we have taken the setup on multi-day trips. As for true bike stuffing, I can fit my bike in the back of my 2-door Hyundai Accent, with or without front wheel removed. Can't take passengers, and if I don't remove the front wheel, I have to prop up the passenger seat so it doesn't get pushed down and block my mirror view, but it fits. Sometimes work up more of a sweat getting the bike in/out than on the actual ride! |

I have a Suburban and by lifting up the second row passenger seats, the one bike wheels right in. The second lays down in the back. Of course, I'm then only able to take one other person but there's plenty of room for all kinds of bags around the bikes. |

I'm very impressed!

Blankets over the bikes to protect against scratching and just leave enough space for the derailleurs so they don't get bent. |
