Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? Week 5. Averaging 10-12 hours. 3 swims, 4 runs, 3 bikes. I make my own plan, very roughly based on the BT beginner plan. Had to modify it as I have some early-season swim-run races, then nothing till May. Edited by Hot Runner 2012-02-27 5:56 PM |

in a van, down by the river | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? I'm day #50 of the BT beginner 1/2 iron plan, basically 1o.5 hours a week. I don't have the background to be trusted making changes so I pretty much just follow it as written which also helps me build confidence. Occasionally do some extra credit work (weekly tri class at my club) and overcook some of the runs as I still feel quite behind here.Paging forward in the plan is intimidating, so I take it one day at a time. Looks like we all do about the same volumes... |

Extreme Veteran 633 Hollister, CA | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? Ok so I have a question for those of you who are following BT 70.3 plans. It's kind of related to this post but not really. So I looked around for a free 70.3 plan and ended up downloading BT 20wk to a 70.3. (today was my first day actually). Question is: Why is it that BT plans are all over the place in terms of training disiplines on specific days . I work so much better when I know im training one or two disciplines on a given day. Sure, yea adjust it to my schedule, i know, but BT's plan is so all over the place with no rhyme or reason that it even difficult to switch the days to accomodate it to my schedule. Ultimately should I look at the hrs trained for each of the disiplines at the end of each week? |

Extreme Veteran 1136 | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? In preparation for Rev3 Knoxville I am averaging: Past 5 weeks: 11hr 21min Past 10 weeks: 10hr 36min Past 15 weeks: 9hr 13min My hours will be down for the next three weeks due to some work travel and a family vacation but I will get in what I can. gvey - 2012-02-27 11:24 PM Holy crap! I'm impressed or awed or amazed. I'm under 3 weeks out from San Juan 70.3 and I'm averaging maybe 5 hours a week. I'd be doing a couple more a week if I was riding outside, but I can't stand riding in the rain. What are your time goals? I'm shooting for 5:30 - 5:45 on my 5 hours per week. HIM is doable on that amount of training. I raced my first HIM last October basically on olympic distance training. I averaged 6hr 6min per week for the 15 weeks leading up to the race. Make sure you get in as many long (>=56 miles) rides as possible, practice your nutrition/hydration, and pace yourself!!! If you go too hard on the bike you will suffer on the run!!! I had a great race, finished with a great time, and really enjoyed the experience. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? I don't really have a time goal, just to finish and hopefully have a strong run. Maybe around 6:00. I think I could do close to 5:30 on a flat course at sea level and cool climate, with a few more months of training. The bike course in my case is really brutal (3000 foot climb and descent) and I'm not a strong biker, so I'm putting in some extra time on that. I also think the running in the BT program is pretty minimal for someone with a strong run background. I've added some speedwork to train for early-season races, then I'll probably back off of it and focus more on bike and run endurance. I do the swim workouts as is when practical; have to do a disproportionate amount of it on Saturday due to pool hours so I modify it. Later in the program I will probably follow the plan more closely as there are more race-specific workouts. If you have a strong base for the bike then I'm sure you'll be okay with fewer hours; I don't. I had never done a training ride over 2 hours before this year! |

Veteran 660 Northern Illinois | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? My HIM is in September so my 20 week plan won't start until May. For my last HIM I used the free BT plan. I thought it was good for my first HIM and I made it through the training with no problems. For this HIM (Branson) I wanted to increase my training load and see what I was capable of. I'm going to be using the Fitzgerald Level 6 plan and I believe it tops out around 16 or 17 hours. I think I need the longer bike hours that this plan calls for to be prepared for the bike course at Branson. |

Bless your heart. I am glad to see I'm not the only one who thought these were pretty impressive training times. And on another note...didn't know San Juan had a 70.3! Now my interest is really picqued! |

I'd say that anything is possible, so much of it comes down to natural talent/ability, course, weather conditions, etc. but for me I'd be lucky to finish a 70.3 if I only averaged 5 hours a week. For my HIM last summer I pretty much followed BTs 20 week plan which had several weeks at 9 or more hours, on top of that I had a pretty solid run base from marathoning for the previous 5 years or so. I finished in 5:40, on a pretty hot day in July. |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? My HIM is June 3rd so I'm at week 14 on the beginner plan. Mot I've done is 9 and a half hours - with family and full time work no way i can really go beyond that without a divorce! I chop and change the schedule around - the longer trainng sessions are always early mornings on weekends, the rest I slot it as and when I can. I don't follow the swim training as I attend a squad 3-4 times a week and the coach is very much an Ironman mentality so I figure it will work out fine! It's worked well for the 4 sprints and 1 olympic I've done this summer. One of those squads is OWS so that's great practice. Bike is my weakest link and will remain so - I put in the hours on the trainer but am nervous on the road so avoid it. Oh well, race day, no traffic.

Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? i usually average between 5-6 hours a week, that will peak at about 10 hours a week in May just prior to my 2 half irons. I looked last year and my max was about 10.5 hours 2 weeks prior to going 5h13m in my half. This year i expect to be well below 5h in one and 5h is my goal for the other. what i have done is started my training earlier, like last October earlier, whereas last year i had max months running at 50m and 1 month in the 70's (May 2011) I have been running about 70 miles a month since November. So where i was training 3-4 hours a week last year this time, i am now around 6 hours a week with the extra running. |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? I don't have a time goal. This is my 1st HIM, so I'm really just looking to have a good day. Of course, if I was honest, I'd say MOP. I'm OK if I get passed, but I'm also used to passing people, so I'm really trying not to get too caught up in it. I also tend to be an overacheiver so if a plan says do 8 hours per week, I'm happier if I can do 9+. Also my swim is slow now, so it takes me longer to do the mileage. I expect to top out at about 15-17 hours per week. Ali |

Master 2725 Washington, DC Metro | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? gvey - 2012-02-29 2:22 AM Okay, I have to admit, a bit of my post was tongue in cheek. I've done a few of these things. I averaged just over 5 hours a week for IMAZ in 2010. Not a great time, but I had fun. I was just amazed at how many folks are training 12 - 17 hours a week for a half. My question on time was serious...with that much training, what times are y'all shooting for? Ah, copy. For me I've got two HIMs on the schedule this year and I'm hoping to be able to break 5:30... actually I'd really like to get closer to 5:15. My bike was the biggest limiting factor last year (5:40 total time), I did the bike in 3:06 (18MPH) as was rather disappointed. Although the last 10 miles of the bike course was like ridding though downtown Baghdad, I place the majority of the blame squarely on my shoulders. I had hoped to at least come in under 3:00. Prior to this race I hadn't been on the bike all that much... never really... so I did my HIM with bike training consisting of pretty much only the 20 weeks of training from the BT plan. I've been doing Jorge's cycling plan this winter and will roll right into my 16 week HIM plan in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping that I can knock at least the 10 minutes off from the bike alone... if I get lucky I can take 12-15 off the bike time and maybe squeeze out another 5 or so minutes from the swim, run and transitions to get closer to the 5:15 mark. I'm going to use the 16 week BT intermediate plan, but figure I'll cut some of the strength training so I'll be averaging about 10-12 hours a week with some peak weeks pushing 15. |

Veteran 290 | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Plan Hours?? I was 10hrs +- for my first HIM in austin last fall. I have 2 HIMs on the calendar this year and will put in the same amount of time. But I plan to shift a bit more of that time to the bike. I was 6:06 in austin and hope to put myself in position to better that. A number starting with a "5" would feel like a big deal to me. |
