Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I'm doing IM Lake Placid my year. A friend of mine is doing the iron distance Beach2Battleship in October. Friend says to me, at least I can get the M-Dot tattoo when I'm done with my race. I said he could do the same. To me, as long as the distance is done, you deserve the tattoo. He disagrees since it's not a WTC race and won't get the tattoo until a WTC race is done. That makes no sense to me since it's the distance that earns you the tattoo. Anyone else's opinion on this? |

To me M-dot is Ironman brand so I wouldn't want an Ironman tattoo without doing an actual Ironman race. Now, in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. If someone does want an M-dot tattoo after doing the ironman distance than more power to them. It really should only matter what that individual thinks. The only reason I even gave an opinion is because you asked. And if truth be known, I wouldn't ever have a tattoo anyway- so my opinion really shouldn't count- hehe. But you asked so I answered, Shelly |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ( grabbing popcorn). Here we go again.....sorry to be sarcastic but this has been discussed many many times and it gets heated at times. You will get just as many takes.....you and your friend should so what you want and feel comfortable with. FWIW I waiver back and forth on this issue....I lean towards only getting the trademark symbol if you have done an ironman brand but your friends accomplishment is the same in my book but another version of the tattoo may be in order. But he doesn't news to listen to me or nor would I criticize anyone who did it. ( this should be a food thread lol....any bets on how many pages?) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've sometimes thought about getting 140.6 tat....er wait- that's WTC TM too. (Jorgito beat me to it!!) But considering the long run into T1 last year @ B2B maybe I should go with 140.8???? I say do whatever ya want. No one claims you have to do a WTC IM to wear an IM watch ...as long as those royalties get paid

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd love to do an actual ironman race but live in Fl and IMFL sold out in what, 12 minutes this year? Don't have the cash to pay 600 plus to reg and add travel expenses. I personally think its the distance that counts but everybody's entitled to their own opinion Edited by rjrankin83 2012-06-17 7:38 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You peaple disgust me. How could you possibly want an IM tattoo after how they just totally banned Lance Armstrong. I don't care about the distance I will never support WTC again. in fact I am going to start a petition to the White House seeing if they will make it illegal to get M-dot tattoo regardless of what race you do. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fundamentally, I'm in the "it's your body--put whatever you want on it and who cares what anyone else thinks?" camp. But, I do also think that if he's going to get an M-dot tat, he should do an actual M-dot race. If for no other reason than that people will see it and ask him, "which IM did you do?" and he'll have to explain, "Oh, well, you see, I did B2B, which isn't an actual Ironman race, but it is the same distance, so I figured...." and it'll be awkward. I'd say either he should get a B2B tat or a 140.6 tat or wait until he does an actual WTC race. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WTC didn't create the distance, nor the personal accomplishment of completing it. If you do it and want the tat, get it. They don't own you or the tat.. |

Some people see it as a sign of the sport (and distance). |

I find it ironic that you complain in one thread about censorship and threads being pulled and how you don't contribute because of how the mods run this site then go and make these comments. You may be the best triathlete ever, but the only comments I have seen you post are negative, attacking and not within the spirit of this site. I hope you are a victim of your own comments. |

My comment isn't negative, it's a statement of fact. If one is inclined to put a tattoo expressing their love for a family member, vocation, hobby, or race, why should anyone else's approval be required? So my comment is apt. And thank you for the education in regard to the spirit of this site. I need to clearly spend more time here to have a better understanding of that. |
