A cyclist was killed yesterday on a road that is very popular for bicycle training and races. Very sad.
http://oliverdailynews.com/penticton-cyclist-killed-on-tucelnuit-drive/#comments

The scary part was that I was riding on that same road yesterday, 1 hr. earlier than the fatality.

This makes 4 people that were hit by cars and killed yesterday.  So sad to hear each one because who of us doesn't have a story where you saw something happen and thought "Man, I could'a been creamed if I wasn't lucky."

According to bicylinginfo.org, there were 618 bicyclist deaths in 2010.

There were 566 US troop deaths in Afghanistan last year.

I don't know the rest of the statistics to see if the risk is as close on a per-person basis, if Triathletes/Cyclists are in a higher risk category than the guy who's riding while drinking a 40 on his way back from the bar, but in simple year-to-year comparison, it looks like there have been as many deaths among cyclists as there have been year-over-year in Afganistan...

Be safe people.

That shouldn't happen.  I am not sure of the exact road, but there are beautiful trails out there.  I would hate for people not to ride them out of fear.  I hope you're doing ok.

Little follow-up on my comment.  This is an interesting article with lots of stats asking "Is Cycling Dangerous?"  He has lots of stats comparing stuff like crashes per million miles, and other stuff.

Sadly, the author (Ken Kifer) was killed by a drunk driver 6 miles from his home while riding his bike.

http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/health/risks.htm

Bottom line of the article and my point is: Treat it like it's dangerous and be on the lookout for everything.

He was hit from behind?  Not much you can do to look out for that kind of crazy driver... so, so sad.   Heartbreaking, in fact.   Let's all be safe out there.

How terrible, and extra scary to hear you were out there just an hour before.  Not to be an arm-chair quarterback or to jump to possibly false conclusions, but it doesn't sound like the driver was driving under the best of circumstances, possibly even a stolen car?

Awful, but given the number of nuts on the road how are we be surprised? Two weeks ago I had a lady move towards the side of the road blowing her horn and yelling to get off the road. Not to stereotype (yeah right) but she was obese and driving with a cat on her lap! I lost my cool and said mean things to the woman at the stop sign for scaring my friend and almost making her crash.

Yesterday I had a cop yell at me to get all off the road and onto the berm. Apparently he was unaware of the new 4-foot law in PA.

Very tragic news.  I wish peace for friends and family during this time.

We just had a cyclist killed out on the route we ride a lot.  He was a doctor and was a very lovely man. The real tragedy is that it was a hit and run.  They haven't found who killed him.  Just horrible.

There was a cyclist killed just south of Calgary yesterday too ... although the twist to this one is that the cyclist accidently swerved into traffic.

And that photo from this story makes it look like a GREAT cycling road.  Rumble strip.  I'd ride to the right of it!

I would have called local PD and filed and complaint - that is NOT ok - what the cop did (not that the ladies actions were any better)

Not 20 feet away the daughter of my dad's girlfriend was sitting in her patrol car. I didn't want to create an issue for her, this was a county sheriff and she's from a different township, helping out at the county fair.

As for the woman, my actions were pretty bad too. I called her a fat f***k and asked her if she was going to eat the cat. Don't ask me how I came up with that. We scooted out of there pretty fast.

Sad to read this article but even worse her father was there when it happened.  My heart goes out to that man - he'll blame himself and play it over in his mind forever even though he couldn't have done anything to change what happened.

Peby I rode through there maybe an hour before you as well (less than 2 hrs before the accident).

There sure were a lot of riders out getting ready for the GranFondo on Sunday.  It sure was hot too - my bike computor showed 36degC (97F).  I'm expecting 40degC (104F) on Sunday.

I actually got hit by a truck on the 4th while riding my bike.  Thankfully, mine didn't turn out to be a fatality (I'm very sore a few days later and think there may be some internal damage to my knee, but grateful to be alive).

To be completely honest, though, I'm really looking forward to getting a new bike and getting back into training....but I'm very wary about riding on the road again.  I've not had anyone act malicious toward me (that I know of), but it sounds like it happens, and there are obviously a lot of inattentive drivers out there.  I really wish there was a way to make me feel safe (ignorance is bliss??) to ride on the street again...

Yeah, I'm dangerous, huh? My friend was laughing her a** off at that, I'm usually the calm one. She's the one who screams all the way down a steep hill.

I wonder what cat tastes like?

I love it... I know, I know - we shouldn't engage in shouting matches with drivers, they could have a gun....blah, blah, blah.... Sometimes it just feels good to tell an a**hole off.
