What to do with them?

I know you can give them away, or turn it into a media server...

I have a 8 yr old Dell running win XP...  I also turned into a Lynux system by loading Ubuntu (I can select which OS I want to boot up), but the graphics card is having issues running the advance version.

Anyway, after playing with all that, it's just been sitting gathering dust for the last 6-7 months.  I'm thinking I will just pillfer the 20" monitor and have dual monitors on my Win7 machine.  At least I can reuse the monitor.

Any other suggestions?  Of course if I give it away, I will reformat and clean my HD so no valuable info can be recovered from it.

Best buy takes anything and ethically scraps it for you. IIWY: the simpler drive solution is to physically remove it and damage it beyond readability. Take it apart and bust it.

We use a drill press. The rest is recycled. But if it's working perfectly use a delete/cleaner and donate it to some family/kid...?

BCWipe does a thorough job of erasing a hard drive.

I know in Philly we have a nonprofit that takes donated computers and recycles them back into the community. Maybe you have one near you?

Sledge Hammer.

I'm no computer expert, but I believe that falls under HARDWARE.

Cool

www.killdisk.com  It's what the government uses.  It should be good enough.  It's not like anyone you donate the box to is going to pay $3,000+ to have a high-end data recovery service try to do a data-bit search on it and recovery data.  Even just reformatting the drive will sufice for 99.9% of the population.  I wouldn't be so paranoid.

If you can't find a shurch, synagogue, school, charity that will take it - contact your town's recycling center to ask about the recycling of old computers.  Don't just throw it into the trash.  You may even be able to find a local recycler that will pay per pound.  There are precious metals inside PCs that they recycle for profit.

Either wipe it and donate

Or

Pull the HD and get a case for it so you can turn it into an external/portable hard drive.

I've used the following for wiping drives at work.

http://www.dban.org/

Personal drives, one of three methods;

DBAN
power drill
or target practice.

Yep - that's what we use at work.  Run it and let it go through 3 times (minimum).  When completed, take out the hard disk, go outside away from all other electric stuff (monitor, T.V., etc.), and run a strong magnet over it.

+1 for DBAN. Very effective, very easy to us.
