Never fear. This is one issue that WILL get solved even if congress has to hold a special session. Simple solution would be to just fill up those conveniently placed ATM machines with house stripper bucks. Put in your card, get a version of monopoly money that you can spend like real cash inside. Kind of surprised they don't do this already. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() I didn't read the reason. But it seems TO ME, that stamping coins (and the metal) is more expensive than printing paper. What they SHOULD do is just elminate the penny (sorry Abe Lincoln). Save the copper and the stamping. Just round prices to the nearest nickle. |

Just round prices to the nearest nickle. One of their reasons was the circulation time. Dollars have to be replaced every 4 years where coins will last 30+ years. Either way, it's the government, so it will cost more money no matter what they do. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() its not a bad idea really. I kinda like it. Then again I am one of the few guys who want a coin holder in my wallet. I am sure this will push more of that.
As for stripper bucks. I am not sure if I would do that. Might be easily faked. Especially in a dark lighting. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm sick of them talking about it, either do it or don't. But don't just expect the populace to adopt it if you are going to keep bills in circulation. If the US treasury stops giving out $1 bills and replaces them with the $1 coins there is no discussion. I really don't care one way or another. |

So, uh, up here in Canada - our gov't announced this year that the penny will be phased out - it will take a long time. AND we are getting all these plastic bills - kinda cool too -- they are finally more in circulation - they feel weird but are cool (my hubby had a few yesterday) - http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/05/02/new-20-bill-plastic_n_1471122.html As for the coins - they do last much longer - and it's kinda nice when you pull out a handful of change and see you more than 10 bucks for just few coins. Easier for vending machines and such once they are converted ... But really i think the success of the Loonie is about having a fun name for the coin. What would you call yours? |

But it seems TO ME, that stamping coins (and the metal) is more expensive than printing paper. What they SHOULD do is just elminate the penny (sorry Abe Lincoln). Save the copper and the stamping. Just round prices to the nearest nickle. minting coins is much more expensive than printing money but it lasts in circulation much much longer than paper, so overall it is cheaper to issue coins than $1 bills. BUT, they have done this in test markets in the past and find that people don't spend the $1 coins. they keep them as collectors things, give to kids, or just forget to carry them with them to buy stuff. in europe many men's wallets have a large coin pocket on the outside. that doesn't exist here. it would be really difficult to make this happen without forcing it through - vending machines would have to stop accepting $1 bills, you can't do it in "test markets," or people will go out of their way to get bills, wallets have to get on board, etc etc etc. |

I was too young with the $1 but i do have an old $2 bill somewhere ... kind of fun to pull out every once in a while |

We've had the loonie since 1987 and the toonie since 1996; as I recall, there were some who held on them as collectors items when they were first released but that once people were convinced that they were not going away, people stopped holding on to them and they started to be used regularly. There was talk of a $5 coin but I haven't heard much on that recently with the pending release of our new polymer bills ($50 and $100 right now). in europe many men's wallets have a large coin pocket on the outside. that doesn't exist here. it would be really difficult to make this happen without forcing it through - vending machines would have to stop accepting $1 bills, you can't do it in "test markets," or people will go out of their way to get bills, wallets have to get on board, etc etc etc. I don't think having coin pockets on wallets is common up here; it may be but definitely not something I've ever noticed. I don't see it as a draw back but I also rarely carry cash and just throw my change in a dish that we roll up when the dish is full. As for forcing it, while it was forced since the bills were no longer produced, bills remained in circulation for quite a while following the issuing of both the loonie and toonie. As the bills made their way to the bank they would be removed from circulation but I recall a period where vending machines wouldn't take the toonie but would still take a $2 bill a couple of years after the toonie was released and the $2 bills were quite rare.
