Subject: Interesting observation at the gym

So New Year's Day I went out for a nice refreshing 11 mile run.  While I was out there I was letting my mind wander as I normally do and I got to thinking "oh great the gym is going to be packed tomorrow... I love the resolutionists".  So yesterday at the gym It was pretty quiet... really low key. I thought "hmmm... maybe a lot of folks took today off work"  Then today I get there and same thing... dead.  I was the first person on any of the cardio equipment.

So how are you guys seeing things so far?  Is the mid-week new year giving me a false sense of hope... will my gym be slammed this coming Monday? Or have millions of people said "eh forget about it... I'm gonna stop going after a month anyway so why start"

Lots of people have off-ish this week and most of my meetings start Monday. So I think the carnage is coming on Monday.

Are you a resolutionist if you just took-off the last 2 weeks?  Or just a sad sack?

I had the same observation at my club yesterday-- parking lot was about the same as always and so was the workout area.

Maybe all the resolutionists were thinking it was going to be crowded and stayed away. Then in two weeks, when all the resolutionists think all the other resolutionists have given up, it will be slammed.

It seems like here Feb - March is when it gets a little crazy.  Everybody is trying to get into beach shape.

had quite a few new faces in the spin class this morning.  I summarized my observations in another posts, but its kind of interesting to watch now from the other side of it.

I did see more people than usual, but not nearly the usual mad rush.  I think it's likely that it's a slow week in general (empty at work, great commute).  I wouldn't be surprised if Monday is terrible.

However, I also wondered if the economy, etc, is scaring people away from "unnecessary expenses"?

At my crossfit gym there have been quite a few new faces. I love it. 1) it's great to see people challenging themselves in a new way and 2) there is the possibility, slight as it is, that I won't come in last on the timed WOD.

Nice not being the new kid for a change huh?

I have been to both the Y and the climbing gym since the new year and neither has seemed busier than normal.

Rumor is it's supposed to start on Monday. Everybody's getting that last half-week of bad food and lax attitude behind them before jumping on their New Year's resolutions. I like the two-weekers, the monthers and the quarterlies. They subsidize my membership fees.

Like many, I haven't seen a noticable uptick in the busyness of the gym since the new year began, but I have been going later than normal, so maybe this is just what it always looks like at 10am as opposed to 5am. The paking lot, however, has been PACKED both days and I really can't figure out where all the people who belong to those cars are at.

Still in their car, eating the last cheeseburger and smoking the last cigarette.

I was busier at the gym before the new year than it has been the two days I've been there. I am curious too what Monday brings.

I hope more people do starting getting in better shape, even if it means I need to be an to get them off the treadmill I want on!

Funny - I've been a member of my gym for just over a year now.  I average going there 2-3 times per week, but hadn't found the pool in months.

I've hit the pool twice now in 3 days.  It wasn't really a "new years resolution" but more of a "I should probably start swimming again."

But I get the feeling that people might be looking at me as a "resolutioner."  Which frankly doesn't bother me because to me see them and them to see me, we are both at the gym.

Otherwise, have to admit, I never really pay attention to how crowded the gym is when I go, so can't say either way if it looks more busy.  Parking lot was full, but my gym the lot is almost always full during weekday evenings...

Yep pretty crowded tonight at my gym - it helps that this is a brand spanking new YMCA that just opened last month downtown... everything is so nice and new and in working order.

Trying to be patient with the people aimlessly wandering, abruptly stopping in their tracks, beginners in intermediate classes, and ladies gathering in packs in the locker room right in front of my locker. Sweet smiles to all, I hope they stick around :)

Hit the gym right at 5 tonight and had no trouble getting one of the better treadmills.  I did notice that the ellipticals seemed busier than usual.

You all should be happy for them. Hopefully the population will start getting in shape for the coming civil war/zombie apocolypse.

The mid week NYE is giving you false hope. The crowds will be there next week. Everyone starts a new diet/workout regime on a Monday.

PS- When I was at the gym tonight even the personal trainer who was leading our small group class that the crowds weren't there because of when NYE was.

I usually take a late lunch and hit the pool as the noon lunch crowd are finishing up.  There are five lanes open and usually 2 or 3 are split and the rest have one person.  So about half the time I have a lane to myself and half the time I split so it is a great situation.

The other day, all lanes were split and several people were milling around wondering if they should hop in and circle or just wait.  Not crazy busy or anything but more people than I normally see.  We'll see another more significant spike in the spring as people start thinking about the early season races.

Yup, definitely more people. I try to go on off times over the first couple of weeks in January. I am reminded how aimlessly I wandered my first couple of times at the club a few years back. No big deal for me.
