Swim
Comments: Sucked. Dunno what happened. Perhaps it was long. Perhaps it was the shallow water at the start and end, about 50m or so at both ends was wading over slippery clay bottom of the lake. What would you do differently?: Swim faster. Not backstroke the whole way? ( Just kidding, I didn't backstroke ) Looking at overall times, they all seem slow, like none under 20:00, which points to a long swim. Transition 1
Comments: One of the high points of the race. I blazed T1. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: I finally blew up! :) My average power is 16 watts over my calculated threshold. That's a lot. Especially since I'm not tapered and carrying some fatigue. I rode too hard for the day. But, this was a bonus race, so I wasn't expecting to do superb. I hoped I'd do better than I did though. But I've verified my power zones now. :) What would you do differently?: Uhm, ride easier if I wanted to still be able to run. Bring another bottle on the bike. Good bike ride, bad triathlon bike leg. :) Transition 2
Comments: Fast again. Put on socks, shoes, grabbed race belt and visor, took off. What would you do differently?: Change my legs for a fresh pair. :) Run
Comments: I was dehydrated coming off the bike. Only took one bottle, which usually is enough. Not today. And the promised aid station coming out of T2 wasn't. So I was without fluids for about 25 minutes. That didn't really help things. Neither did riding too hard on the bike. After about mile 1.5 when my legs still felt dead, I knew they weren't gonna come back, so my goal turned to damage control. I actually walked about 20 feet at each aid station to drink a full cup of gatorade and water each. Was feeling a bit better the last mile and point 3, but the crowd also helps with that. The hills hurt, especially with noodle legs. Mile 1: 7:33, AHR 163 Mile 2: 8:53, AHR 164 ( missed the mile marker a bit ) Mile 3: 8:36, AHR 164 Mile 4: 9:53, AHR 162 Mile 5: 9:38, AHR 159 Mile 6+: 10:15, AHR 162 HR was ok. Obviously carrying fatigue since pace didn't jive with HR. What would you do differently?: Taper. Bike easier. Not dehydrate on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Drank 3 or 4 bottles of gatorade and water after crossing the finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: This being a C race, I didn't taper at all. Riding too hard on the bike. Dehydrating on the bike. Event comments: It was Nationals, so it got lots of attention. A few annoying details like the missing aid station after T2, and the missing swim warmups between waves. Otherwise, a great race. Ultramax puts on a great event. Last updated: 2006-05-26 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:30. Had bowl of granola, nanner, and 2 cups of coffee.
Ran for ~15 min. Bike's not allowed out of transition, so no bike warmup. They lied in the pre-race meeting about allowing warmups between wave starts, so no swim warmup.
