Pre-race routine:

My standard pre- race routine: walk the dog, eat a bagel, load the car and go. To the standard routine I added downing a dose of cold medicine and grabbing a handful of throat lozenges and Kleenex.
Event warmup:

On Saturday, I came down with a cold, didn't sleep well Saturday night and woke up Sunday feeling even worse. As I waited for my wave I was feeling like crap and had gotten light headed. I considered bailing, but decided to test the swim to see how I'd feel. So, 10 minutes before my wave I jumped in. The water was cool and clear and I didn't die, so decided to start the race and just ease into things.
Swim
  • 11m 42s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I kept things nice and easy and my head started to clear. I was able to draft a bit, but mainly just swam by myself, staying out of trouble. The water was great! Peter said there were star fish all over and that he even saw a conch. I did not notice any of that :( I think I was too focused on just making it out of the water, I didn't take time to look around. Peter, on the other hand, in true Peter fashion, got distracted by the star fish and conch and almost dove down to get a closer look.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Not a good pace, but what I needed to do.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

So, I guess I was still a bit light headed as I had to hold on to the fence rail to keep from falling over when I tried to put on my socks. This added to my time.
What would you do differently?:

Not be sick.
Bike
  • 29m 56s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.04 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt pretty good on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Got through this faster than t1, but still lots of room for improvement.
Run
  • 26m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

All things considered, I am ok with this pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walking around the venue.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sick.

Event comments:

The swim and run were really nice, but the bike course left something to be desired. Still, if any of the other races that they will hold here thought the summer fits in my schedule, I would do it.

Course: Because of road construction, the regular venue for this race was not available. Instead, this was hold on Virginia Key, which does not have a lot of space. I think the race ( both distances) was capped at 400 racers. This resulted in a bike course that was 2 laps with 3 u- turns per lap and with some speed humps. The course was also crowded. Without those things, this would have been a smoking fast course.

Course: This was pretty much a trail run, which was great. However the last roughly .5 mile was on the beach! Beach running in soft sand is hard. There were areas of more packed sand, so that helped. There were also spots throughout the route that were soft sand. Made for an interesting run.

Nice Work Ann-Marie!  You average 20 mph on the bike and all you have to say is "I felt pretty good on the bike"!!!!!  Good run pace after a very good bike leg.  Not bad for having cold.

Man if only I could maintain 20mph on the bike when I felt good (let alone when being sick). Great Job Ann-Marie

Really, 20 mph and there were speed bumps? You were moving! And then sub 27:00 through a trail and beach run. All done with a head cold. You continue to rock the impressive results, great job!

I guess the hands are handy if you're trying to blow a snot rocket, steer, and take a drink all at once might explain the SMOKIN' FAST bike time in the midst of a schnozzblocker!

Awesome job all around.

Congrats on a nice race and 2nd in AG even though you were sick. 20 mph on a funky bike course and you say,"I felt pretty good on the bike." I'd say that's a little better than "pretty good". Well done!
