Total Time = 55m 52s
Overall Rank = 11/52
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/?
Pre-race routine:

Set alarm for 4:20, but was actually awake around 4. This was only my second tri, and I had DH with me at my first. Soooo...A little nervous about forgetting anything even though I set everything out last night and went through it again this morning. Packed up backpack and got on my way by 4:50. Ate a Clif bar and drank some water on the way there. Potty stop right before transition area.
Event warmup:

I walked to the transition area and organized my towel. Got marked up and aired up. Then talked to the women around me and took a few pics. "Warm up" consisted of walking to start and dancing around while we waited for the fire boat to arrive.
Swim
  • 13m 14s
  • 404 yards
  • 03m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Never having done an OWS before, I couldn't relax and just swim until there were about 100yds left. I side and breast stroked most of the way. I couldn't get my breathing normal, and I felt so darn heavy! Had to be nearly hauled out at the steps because I couldn't find the step I thought was there. An oh-so-graceful exit :/
What would you do differently?:

I just need more practice OWS, which is not easy to do where I live. Ummmm...and know where the exit step is.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

It was a fairly long run from the water to bike. Tossed down goggles and cap and put on helmet right away. Dried off feet a bit and threw on socks (I haven't gone barefoot in my shoes yet...and nothing new on race day, right?). Shoes took a minute, but most time spent trying to get bike off rack without knocking others off. They were packed pretty tight even though there was extra room on the end (leads me to a question about rules and etiquette-can I put bike where there's more space at end of rack?)
What would you do differently?:

Possibly no socks? Reposition bike?
Bike
  • 23m 6s
  • 6.67 miles
  • 17.32 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the ride! After passing the 9y/o going out of transition (yes, there are pics already :o) and seeing Jason and the kids cheering by the gate, I put all my T.I.T.S. to good use. Swim might have been horrible, but I started picking off riders. One lady told me "Nice work!" as I passed her going up a hill. :) I think I did a good job of cornering and shifting to keep my power up and down the hills. Best part is that Jason moved the kids three times to see me go by!
What would you do differently?:

I might take a couple more drinks right before T2.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Rode into parking lot and easily got my feet unclipped. Hopped off and jogged bike to rack (I've almost got the awkward hang of running in bike shoes). Switching shoes took longer than I wanted. I grabbed a quick drink and took off again.
What would you do differently?:

Buy tri shoes?
Run
  • 15m 28s
  • 1.69 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Super short run. Lost two spots to people behind me, but I'm happy with my pace. Cheered on the sprint bikers as we were going over the last bridge together. Saw Jason and the kids waiting by the finish below me and started yelling to them.
What would you do differently?:

Felt a little low on energy (no coffee?). Thought about and should've taken Gu in T1, then I could've pushed it more at the end. But not all bad since I was really enjoying seeing/hearing my cheering squad.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed Gatorade, water and medal at finish then found my family. We went over to the post-race area, and I signed in for a massage. Picked up my mimosa while I waited. People were trickling in so we let kids play at the park and walked down to Starbucks. Came back and cheered for a few people as they rounded the last turn.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No OWS experience.

Event comments:

I enjoyed this race. And even though I choked on the swim, I'm glad I chose this for my first OWS. The atmosphere felt relaxed and the people around me were friendly. Lots of cheering (for everyone) around the park and participants had encouraging words for each other as well.

Great job Erin. Congrats on your first open water swim. They will get easier from here.

(I think that your total time is wrong, I think that it should be under an hour not over 6 not sure what the problem is there.)

Erin, great job. Congrats on getting your first OWS under your belt.  How cool was it to have your DH and kids there to cheer? It really takes the whole thing up a notch.  Excellent job by an excellent person!

Way to go Erin! If I don't get my heart rate up a little before the swim, I spend the first 100 or so getting my breathing under control. Something you may consider for the next race.Glad your family was there to cheer you on!

There's a simple fix for slow swim [any] times.  It's called NEON.  We've discussed this already. Smile

"Choking" on a first anything is called a PERSONAL RECORD!!! So, you're a champ no matter what. (WAS there actually an exit step, though? I must know).

4:20. Heh heh.

Super solid bike and run too. Also, a big fan of your melons in SOAS. Your melons and SOAS. Both. Whatever.
