My husband just got his hand pinned back together and I'm looking for ideas on things we can do. I keep catching myself about to ask if he wants to go biking or swimming. I think he's just realizing the impact just over a week in that he's out for 6 weeks of summer. Please help me come up with some fun ideas for him! Mountain biking and Dirt biking are his big hobbies- both of which are out.

Thanks!

Go to an orthopedic supply shop and get a cast cover. At least he'll be able to shower or just get wet in the pool. Makes it bearable.

But beware the stank which grows in that cast during the summer. No funk rivals that stench!

I can attest to this after a disastrous bike wreck way back when. It gets worse if you get water in it. Ugh. That was not a fun summer. No baseball, cycling or any sports, and my sex life was out the door!

Tell the Doc that the pain meds aren't working and get something stronger prescribed. Stay stoned for six weeks.

In 6 weeks you couldn't figure out how to use your left hand?

Ya, go get some 14ers in. Take it easy. Relax. Let the hand heal. The stair machine works without impact. If running does not bother him, he can do a 6 week run focus. The cast is going to really stink though.

Sorry about the accident, it does really suck. As Matt Carpenter said to me when I asked about a refund... Sorry to hear. Life get's in the way sometimes. Heal fast. Undecided

Just don't encourage ice cream eating as a second sport.... that has some serious risks involved. Tongue out

I broke my wrist mountain biking in June and was SOOOOO bummed about ruining my summer, but it hasn't been that bad. It's not my dominant, but I've been doing a lot of trail running and some pretty serious hikes, which got me outside and kept me in shape. The running got my cast sweaty and nasty, but I don't care - worth it! Also, if he got pinned together he might not be in a cast as long as I was, so hopefully he can get back to doing stuff sooner...

Thanks for the advice. Luckily the Without Limits team let me take his Xterra entry. So I will be busy flailing around Lory in a few weeks. Still not sure I want to even try Buffalo Creek... But he's due to get his cast off the week before that.

He should learn how to write with the other hand. He's got enough time to get decent penmanship down.

DO NOT GET IT WET!! If he gets it wet go to his surgeon that day or the next day. Not sure if his pins are thru the skin or under the skin but SO not worth getting infected over.  He can cool his jets a few weeks.  For showering you also you can use a plastic bag and duct tape which works as well as the commercially available cast covers.

It sounds like your ankle has seen plenty of mileage and, by the description of your surgeon’s plan, that you have damage to the articular cartilage that caps your talus bone.
