Pre-race routine:

Granola bar and a cup of coffee on the 30 minute drive to the event. Got there plenty early as I was a little nervous about day of race entry. They have a full marathon and a 50k that they do at the same time and wasn't sure what their overall participant limit was. No problems.
Event warmup:

Hit the port o potty early because they only had a few. Good idea as race start was delayed because of the line. They ended up starting it anyway even though about 20 people were still in line. No running warmup as this was just supposed to be a hard training effort.

Comments:

Started back a little bit because I was chatting with a friend. Not chip timed so lost some time shuffling up to the starting line but I really didn't care. I was on my own watch and was just doing my own thing. I'm training through this event and just wanted a good longer run without hindering my ongoing training plan (my plan actually called for a rest day).

Plan was to go out about 8:00 miles and see how long that felt comfortable. First three were about 7:55 and felt very good. I was just cruising along. At four miles into the trail a creek was running right down the middle of the path. Very thick wet mud on the sides that people were walking and tip toeing through. The water down the middle was about a foot and a half deep. I am used to running some pretty nasty trails so I just plowed right through the water. I think people thought I was nuts but it was way faster and nobody got through there with dry shoes anyway.

Just past that there was a section of coarse gravel and sand from another creekbed that thankfully was dry but still a hundred yards of that was enough.

Got to the turnaround in about 54 minutes which I was pretty happy with as the course was a little long (6.65 at that point). Kept the same pace until I hit the sandy gravel. I was very cautious this time as I did not want to injure anything. Came up on the water again. I passed three people there who were trying not to get dirty. The rest of the race I just ran comfortably.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Had a good run and did exactly what I set out to do for the day.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my medal and headed home. Had a nice lunch and a few beers at my favorite brew pub. Pedicure after that followed by a 90 minute massage. Pretty great day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. Ran well within my ability and was ready for the next days training session.

Event comments:

Great informal half marathon. For $30 was a great deal. Food was good and course was very scenic. Nice early season, low key event.

Oh my gosh, it sounds like a great day!  A run you were very happy with, lunch, beer, cheap race, pedicure and massage - you know how to live!   Congrats on accomplishing what you set out to do, and IMO at a very good pace.

Guess you did rest a *little* bit, even if you did do a HM before resting.   Great race, smart move on the coarse gravel, and way to show the water-phobes how to get it done.  Super job, Steve!!
