Pre-race routine:

Get dressed, then dress more. Ate sausage and cheese on a roll. Finished packing, wondered about my sanity, and drove to the venue.
Event warmup:

Ha, warm up. It was 35* when we started, so the 3 layers of clothes would have to do the trick.
Bike
  • 4h 45m 59s

  • 8.39 mile/hr
Comments:

I believe we could have gone faster through the gravel and grass. The ST beat the crap outta me. I think I totaled 4 wipeouts, but I did have a ton of other tribulations through there.
What would you do differently?:

Not fall. Make more prudent decisions when choosing races?
Post race
Warm down:

Eat Brats and drink beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ability. Genetics. Practice. Conditioning. Any combination of the above.

Event comments:

First ever MTB race. I quite enjoyed it, but have a long way to go before I am comfortable on the MTB. Singletrack is tight, and I need to get more comfortable with theidea of picking up the pace.

That is a heck of a long race for your first MTB race. That took lots of guts to enter and finish. Good job. If you do it again, I'll come down and do it, too. I will make you look good!

Great job! That was a long first race! I'm sorry that it was so cold out.  At least it was sunny. I suppose that the extra layers added some padding?

Are you ready for the next one?

It was either guts or simply bad decision making I think I'll consider it for next year, although my buddy Dan has sworn off anything that long.

I'm looking at a couple of options coming up. It really wasn't that bad once we got going.

Extra padding was appreciated! I didn't put any details in about the crash that sent me tumbling towards the creek. Padding didn't help. Adrenaline did!

What an entry into MTB racing!!  Congratulations on entering, competing, finishing and not killing yourself in the process  You need to get over to Alaafia and ride what the Ragnar race called the red loop, I think you'd have a blast.

40 miles for your first MTB race = WOW!  Nice work coming out of it unscathed, as it sounds, despite the 4 wipeouts.  Congrats on not getting eaten by a pig, snake, bear or gator!

Brats + beers = solid finishing rewards

That is one long first time in a mountain bike race distance!  Given the weather and number of layers & falls I would say you rocked it and kicked butt!

Besides, I am too chicken to try riding MTB, I know I will break something.
