Pre-race routine:

My first race since moving to Atlanta! Treated this as a training run for the Ragnar Relay (19 miles) next month, and I had run 8 miles yesterday. Those 8 miles felt harder than they should have, and left my legs feeling like I'd ran a race! So, I knew I'd be taking it a little easy today.

Alarm went off at 4:45 a.m. as the race organizers stressed over and over to arrive by 6 a.m. so you weren't sitting on the off-ramp when the race started. So glad I did this, because even at 5:45 a.m. I sat on the off ramp for a good 10 minutes! In the parking garage I ate my bagel, drank my coffee and listened to some music. At 6:30 I headed to the race start, but my parking spot was literally just below it, and now that I knew where it was I figured I could go back in the warm car for 30 more minutes.
Event warmup:

Just before 7 a.m. I headed back up to the starting line and got into my coralle. Did some light stretching to ease the tension in my legs from yesterday.

Comments:

My wave was the last one (I was super honest with my seeding prediction) and the announcer had some fun with the "party people in the back" - then I was crossing the start line! Really fun start with tons of spectators at the beginning and a beautiful sunrise behind us. Temperature was right at 60 degrees and my wardrobe was perfect (capri leggings and a tank).

I was determined to NOT start off the race walking up the hills, so I chugged my little legs around and around up the hills. Victory until mile 4, when I gave in and walked the 2nd half of one. There were prizes for the top 100 racers who ran DOWN Cardiac Hill the fastest, I guess in years past the course has gone UP this hill. It's almost a mile long. Crazy.

Felt great most of the way, just the lingering fatigue in my legs from multiple high volume run weeks. Exactly what I needed to feel for Ragnar training! At mile 6, I took a Clif Shot gel and ate most of it. Why not.

At some point, the course took us through Piedmont Park, which is where Music Midtown was and where I saw Bruno Mars among others - it looked soooo totally different without the stages set up. Fun to run through it though.

The last two miles I was walking up more of the hills (see elevation profile in my blog today; 3,000+ ft elevation gain) but there was a lovely, long downhill in the last mile. What goes up must come down, I kept thinking to myself.

In the last half mile, I was tempted to walk for a bit (everyone else around me was), but made myself keep running. I really enjoyed coming into the finish chute and crossing that finish line, so much fun! I love races!

What would you do differently?:

Nothing - this was a training run for Ragnar next month so ran a very normal pace for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my SWEET medal (it spins!), a Clif Bar, a paper jacket thing and a Gatorade. Took a photo and texted my fam. As I was trying to find my parking garage entrance, I decided to chill for a few minutes in the main park/square area where the DJ was hyping everyone up and people were chilling out. Atlantic Station is a pretty cool place.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

High volume training.

Event comments:

GREAT race in the heart of ATL. Free parking, superb time of year, fun shirt and medal.

Well done!

I like the 10 milers - you don't see a lot of them though! I always start to suffer around mile 10.5 in a half so this is perfect.

Nice race, it sounds like you really enjoyed the day!  Those sound like some serious hills but you handled them well.

Ahh.  You ran right past our condo when you were on Juniper.  I saw the traffic control and figured out that it was a race.  Had I known you were running in it, I would have stood on the sidewalk and cheered.  Good job on the race.  You have earned your cool weather race successes by being so diligent in the heat all summer and early fall.

When you get back to biking again, I would like to take you on a midtown bike loop to see some neighborhoods.  When the azaleas bloom in spring is a beautiful time in Atlanta.  We will go past the house where Driving Miss Daisy was filmed.

Great job!  As much as I hate uphills, it's  always nice to have the down.
