Comments: Thank God they shortened the swim. I know it wasn't their choice to open the dam because of the rain, and the upstream portion was impossible and unsafe. I'm happy we had a swim. I have to admit the super fast current was fun and made me feel like Aquaman What would you do differently?: I have no control over the weather or water current, so nothing Transition 1
Comments: I struggled in transition and was slow. I did have extra layers and that made me slower. Everything was wet and muddy. I couldn't get my feet dry and I couldn't get my gloves on. In retrospect, I think my hands would have been cold once the gloves got wet. What would you do differently?: I was disorganized Bike
Comments: This was tough, no good spin I can put on this and everything that could go wrong (ok almost anything) did. I lost the siphon on aero bottle, my bike computer did not sync, and I still don't know what happened at mile 99.75 to cause my bike sensor to stop working, my chain to fall off and get tangle in my rear derailer, btw I was going 29.2 mph when it happened. I didn't wreck but I did cut up my leg pretty good. I was bleeding and my leg was covered in blood. The good news is the rain washed the blood off before my wife saw it. I was dressed properly and never got cold. A lot of people were hypothermic, because they were not prepared for the weather. The roads were wet and so I could not take advantage of the downhills to help with the uphills. Nutrition was good. I'm glad I added martini olives and pistachios to my bike food. They digested well, I had energy and my mouth did not get disgusting sweet. What would you do differently?: Make sure my stuff is working right Transition 2
Comments: Everything was wet! I kept my running gear in a 10 gal zip lock, so it was dry. It was still difficult putting wet feel into dry shoes. What would you do differently?: Maybe another towel. Not sure it would help Run
Comments: My feel were wet, and that created problems. I developed blisters and ran slower then I wanted. I was dressed correctly and never felt cold. Post race Warm down: Soup and emergency blanket What limited your ability to perform faster: The rain! Event comments: The rain messed the race up and even Ironman can't control that. I truly earned being an IRONMAN on this one. I was wet from 6:00 until 11:00 PM. The rain made the course grueling. This was the hardest race I have ever done! I love this sport and I love being an Ironman, I would not change a thing. Last updated: 2018-10-16 12:00 AM |

Up at 5:00 A.M. cup of coffee. Put on tri shorts, glide and liquid band aid on heals and nipples. Second cup of coffee, banana, 2 banana nut muffins, and a cliff bar. Took my bike nutrition and water bottles to the bike. I checked tires and bike. I left my phone on my bike. walked down with my friend Don. It was 48 degrees and raining.
Just staying as dry as possible. I had a disposable poncho. I put on my wet suit. put my morning clothes in 10 gal zip lock bag. Curled up in my poncho and took a nap, waiting to move. It was self seated and my group did not move until 9:00 am. I got to watch the pros ride by on the bike (the shortened swim took them 12 minutes for .9 miles). I didn't get in the water until 9:30.
