Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: Marvelous Manatees - Stronger than Ever! Welcome to the 2023 edition of the Manatees. Our motto this year is (dooo eeettt) Stronger than Ever! We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. Some iteration of this group has been going on for enough seasons and we've lost track of what season we are in! All experience levels and goals welcome. We have soon-to-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, cyclists and swimming specialists. We range from slow to fast, and beginner to veteran, but most of us are somewhere in the middle of all that. Our training philosophies, gear, objectives and methods are similarly varied. We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and active group. Inactive Manatees make us sad so please post to this forum frequently.
We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend. As always, any former Manatees are welcome at any time. To join, please respond to this message and include (or later add) your bio. Please post a brief bio to the thread to introduce or reintroduce yourself by adding information in the format below and/or whatever you'd like to share. No bio, no joinee. NAME: What you're actually called in the real world. OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook, Twitter, Strava or whatever name/handle you use from any other social media site if you'd like us to follow along. STORY: Who you are, why you want to do endurance/multisport, any athletic background FAMILY STATUS: Family situation (single/partnered/family/pets, especially pets) CURRENT TRAINING: If/how you have been training so far THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: If any have been chosen or are on the possibilities list. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: What do you hope to get out of this? WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Why do you want to join this group? |

Extreme Veteran 710 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Marvelous Manatees - Stronger than Ever! NAME: Leanne OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I'm on Facebook, Strava and IG (canadarn2001 & johnslers_kitchen) STORY: I was a sport enthusiast growing up (hockey, ringette, baseball, soccer, golf, volleyball, track & field and cross country). In my late 20s I got back into running. Then I met my now husband who was training for an Ironman. I watched him finish IMFL in 2006 and decided that day I was going to do an Ironman. I started with short distances and finished my IMAZ in 2009 & 2011. During that time I also did numerous half ironman and started to run further distances. I am a runner at heart. I have completed many half marathons, 20+ marathons, a few 50 kms, two 50 milers and attempted 100 miles in 2019 only to DNF at mile 81.75. I developed Osteitis pubis (essentially arthritis the pubis symphysis area) which side lined me in 2020 but slowly but surely returned to running. I completed my first 100 mile race this past year in 2022 @ Umstead in Raleigh, NC. I also came out of triathlon retirement and completed 5 triathlons last year. This year I am continuing my triathlon journey. Right now I am loving the 70.3 distance. FAMILY STATUS: Married to Scott since 2007 (who is also an Ironman) but also an avid surfer and stand up paddle boarder. We got married in Kona, Hawaii, 3 days after the Ironman (Chrissy Wellington and Chris Mc Cormack won that year!) We have two cats (Tyrone and Bella) who are almost 16 years old! CURRENT TRAINING: Currently training for triathlon. I have two 70.3 races on the calendar this year. THIS YEAR'S EVENTS: Wrightsville Beach 1/2 marathon, White Lake International (spring), Chattanooga 70.3, Lahti 70.3, White Lake International (fall), Kiawah Island 1/2 marathon. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: My word of the year is "Joy" just like last year but I have also added simplify and consistency. I will continue to do all things that bring me joy (training/racing/interacting with like minded people), reduce the clutter in my life & home so I have more time to spend doing things that bring me joy and be consistent with my training. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I love cheering others on and seeing people achieve their goals and become the best versions of themselves! |

Sounds like a plan! Now, what is ringette?! Ringette! It's the best sport in the history of sports. It's like hockey but you use a stick WITHOUT a blade. You use a blue rubber ring (instead of a puck) which you pass up and down the ice using your stick. It's 5 on 5 with a goalie like hockey but the rules are different such as you have to pass over the blue lines. It's played only by GIRLS. It was really popular when I was growing up then as the years went on my entire team switched to hockey. Not sure if it's still popular. I think it's a Canadian thing. I bet Jenn played! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Marvelous Manatees - Stronger than Ever! NAME: Karen OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: FB only. It is (or should be) visible to friends only. You can friend-request me if you like lots of pictures of cats, nature, sweaty me doing various workouts and events, and the occasional poem. STORY: I'm an elementary teacher (currently 4th and 5th grades) and spent most of my career overseas. Returned to the US long-term after my dad passed away in 2018 to "take care of" my 84 year old Mom. (Actually, she's in very good shape. Most days it's not that clear who's taking care of who.) I have been involved in endurance sports (running and swimming) since at least age 10, informally before that. Oddly, I did not do my first tri until I was 41 My first swim coach was one of the early Ironmen. I saw how hard he trained, plus the video of Julie Moss crawling over thje finish line at Kona was imprinted on my young mind. I was terrified of all things tri and thought all tris were full IM until I was talked into doing a sprint at age 41. Have always been a solid distance swimmer but nothing outstanding. Once upon a time, I was a decent runner---2:43 marathon and one of the youngest US women to run in the Olympic Trials Marathon (at 17). I still love running but am a lot slower. Aging sucks! Obviously, I do this because I love it. From a young age I've enjoyed doing "crazy" things that people think aren't possible, especially if they are outdoors and physical. FAMILY STATUS: Single, live with Mom. We are Mom/Grandma to three cats: Smudgee, Tomoko, and Shelby. CURRENT TRAINING: In a base-building phase, focusing on HIM, which tends to be my best/favorite distance, I guess. I am working with my coach again after a very undisciplined year last year. (I didn't choose any events till March, or start focused raining for them until..... May? June?) THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Registered for Oregon 70.3 (because I didn't want to make any more travel arrangements on top of the next race!) and 70.3 Worlds in Lahti, Finland (somehow managed to qualify by winning my AG at Calgary last summer). Maybe a few shorter local events if timing works out. I would really like to do an open water swim event (3-5K maybe) or two but still looking into it. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Get/stay healthy (rarely have serious injuries but constant niggles--a lifelong issue, it seems), pay more attention to strength training, recovery, and resilience, be better prepared for my events and perform up to my ability, have fun. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I don't have any in-person friends or close acquaintances who are triathletes, so it's fun to have a group of people to share experiences and laughs with. I have been involved in endurance sports for a long time so can serve as a warning of what not to do in many cases. Edited by Hot Runner 2023-01-05 10:06 PM |

I can add my $.02 here and there on some topics and I try to encourage with inspires, even if not quite often enough. I played hockey growing up (right until the end of high school)! So fun! |

2:43 marathoner and qualified for the Olympic trials!! Whew! I am exciting to be going to Lathi with you! I hope we can meet up! How can I request to have you add me as your friend on FB. I love all things that have to do with cats, nature and working out! |
