I thought it would be funny.

I am a newbie to the sport and have liked what it has done for me.  We talk about it a lot because of the Capital Expense to get it started.

I posted because I thought others would have the same experience OR maybe it is just me

Nope... here's mine

Her:  How was your ride today?

Me:  Good, I'm a bit tired, I think I overdid it by going too long and adding that run at the end.

Her:  what else is new

My wife and I don’t talk a lot about triathlons.  She just understands why I do it and is supportive.  She was okay with me training up to a Half IM and with two kids I told her I’d back it down to Sprints and Olympics for a few years.  And yes, she probably thinks I’m a bit crazy too, but as she has said, there could be lot worse things I could be doing.

Agreed-she is happy I am doing something with my time that is positive.  She is supportive all the time.  She attends the races and gets up with me at 3am.  She just thinks it is funny.  I have never been addicted to anything before.

I have a scheduled myself a week off my training plan and I getting itchy to get back out there.

My wife gets angry when I say `I'm slow' or `I need to lose weight' or `I need to ride lots.'

She's supportive as long as I do my training while she's A) sleeping or B) working or C) out with her friends.

If my training imposes on `us' time then I'm in trouble. So, living in different cities five days a week and sometimes three weeks at a time has a converse effect on my training and marriage.

Well, I'm not married, but I have dated two incredibly "dedicated" (I'd call them obsessed)athletic men. And yeah, I probably sounded like your wife on more than one occasion - a gentle, but semi-serious "calm the eff down and stop being a bike-freak or you'll be sleeping with only the bike". However, now that I've done a tri, trained for a tri and am planning to continue to do so, I feel REALLY bad that I ever yelled at the most recent ex-bf for getting up at 6 am to go running on a Saturday. And now I wish we were still together so we could do those things together

I liked it when they talked to me about their training stuff anyway - it's nice when your SO shares his/her interests with you and is excited about them. Unless he/she is cocky about it (I've dated one of those too), but I doubt you are Neither of the one I mentioned were, so I didn't really mind. And now I understand and feel bad that I felt neglected when they'd take off.

My wife is supportive of my training (most of the time) and suportive of me competing in races. However, much like the OP, I don't think my wife is too crazy about the time spent on BT or me recalling threads that I have found particularly funny or interesting.

I had this recent conversation:

Me: Oh, hey, my friend Campbell emailed about IMMoo.

Wife : How did he do?

Me: He's very happy with his time and glad its over.

Wife : Good for him.

Me: Yeah, he even joked asking if I was going to be out there for IMMoo 2008?

Wife :

Wife :

Wife :

**crickets chirping**

Me : What?

Wife : **low growl**

the moral of the story is that should I ever decide to train for an Ironman, I will need to hire either a nanny or a divorce lawyer...

That's why there's nothing better than a relationship where a run and an ows together are a pre-requisite to beer and pizza.

Yes, and now it's finding a man who's into that stuff who doesn't think that I'm "too slow" or "can't keep up", etc because I did not usher forth from the womb clipped into some pimped out all-carbon bike. Arggg...I try my very hardest! That should count for something!

He has a choice....a gf who has similar interests and is not as fast....or a gf who would rather go shoe shopping.  Put it to him that way and see if he doesn't let up.  Maybe it's just his competitiveness coming out....or maybe he's not so nice.

Mine?  He actually came up next to me in the pool and said "how can someone swim so slow and not drown?"  But I KNOW he was so happy just to have me in the pool with him....so I just laughed (and put ex-lax in his cliff bar later) and kept swimming.

Seriously, we run and/or swim and/or race together whenever we can.  It is great to share those things.  I am slower in everything, but he waits or runs ahead then back, he makes it work so we get to work out together.

  • Now that's funny!

I'm blessed to be dating a fellow triathlete/BTer... our conversations frequently revolve around "did you see that thread about XXX?" or "Did you read so-and-so's log?? holy crap!" We have to catch ourselves when around friends, otherwise it's like we're talking in a different language.

Oh, I don't have anyone right now. But the two previous exes were very hard-core and were unhappy with the fact that I was not - even though the way I started road biking was with my most recent ex (who is now doing bike races in Switzerland) - I could have said 'no, I don't know how to ride a road bike and I don't want to' - but I didn't - I'd always wanted to try but didn't have the money for a road bike. It was our second date (I borrowed a bike from the family he rented a room from that I nannied for) - I crashed into a bush within the first 10 minutes and got back on. I even had to suffer through watching the Tour de France with him. How that never earned me any points, I'll never know.

Glad to hear there are others having these conversations with their wives! I thought I was just going nuts. I managed to trick my spouse into a 1/2 mary. She liked it One step at a time . . .

When the Capt got me through the RnR Half Mary in 2006, he did the same thing.  He ran ahead to the beer, then ran back to get me, then ran with me to the beer and a little past, then ran back to the beer and then caught up to me again...

    He's good like that.

    I personally love the...

Her: We have a lot to do tomorrow (name weekend day)

Me: Yeah, I know. Oh, and I want to get a workout in.

Her: When are you going to fit that in?

    Me: In the morning.

Her: But we have to be there at 10:00am

Me: I know, I'll wake up at 5:15 to eat, start out at 5:45 and be done and showered by 9:00.

Her: *blink* *blink*... But... Don't you want to sleep in.

Whaaa? You just told me we were really busy and needed to get crackin' but I should sleep in? She thinks I'm completely nuts.
