Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I average 1:55 - 2:00 for my usual stuff. My fastest interval with open turns has been 1:24 or so. I don't do flip turns, I'm not in a masters group, and basically only started swimming last year. And I consider myself pretty slow, especially in a tri field. |

I plan on getting some lessons this winter and get that down a few seconds but more importantly become more effiecent....save some energy for the bike, run and celebration of finishing a race! |

Master 1553 Elm Grove | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? My fastest standalone 100yrd is 1:20. Over 2000 I look to average closer to 1:40 or so. As others have said, it takes a lot of work to make sure that you have proper form and it pays huge dividends when you get there. I luckily grew up swimming competitively so I had it beat into my head when I was younger. |

Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? Are you asking how fast I can swim the 100 flat out or what my average pace is over longer distances? I averaged 1:33 /100 Yards for the swim at Ironman Lake Placid in July. (2.4 Miles) I usually do longer intervals (500s and 1000s) but when I do have an occasion to actually do 100 Intervals, I can usually do them ~1:20. To be sure, this is not as fast as it sounds. There are a few folks here on BT that can average ~1:00 /100 Yards. I did a 5k Open Water Swim Race earlier in the year and as very near DFL. Most of the other swimmers were USAS club swimmers and the most of the main pack finished the swim in less than 1 Hour. (Yup, faster than 3.1 MPH in Rough Water or < 1:08 / 100 Yards) And if you are not familiar, most USAS and USMS long course events are not wetsuit legal. |

no idea of average time for longer distances atm as only getting back into the pool after a lay off. too scared to time myself :p Edited by sappho96 2007-11-07 2:52 PM |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? Funny most of you say you are slow but I'd love to be as slow as you. Swimming is technique yah I know; I've taken private and group lessons and have mostly swam 3 times a week since '04 other than being injuried and I'm still really slow...I was I think 5 or 7th from slowest in my HIM. I'm with spokes why can some folks start and get relatively faster so quickly and others like me don't. My fastest 100 is 1:52, in tris it is all over the place since they are agreed hardly ever measured right..best was 1:52/100 in an Oly but I did go over 2:30/100 in my HIM. When I do longer swim intervals 500 yds + my 100's in the pool I'm in the 2:12-2:20 range. I'm doing IMLP and I am dedicated to improving this off season as I don't really want to finish the swim in 2 hours. Edited by KathyG 2007-11-07 2:52 PM |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I'm average about 1:45/100m and could probably go faster if I was to do one timed 100. I've been swimming for about 5 years now and did tris and open water swim meets in my first season in 2003. I was really slow. Much slower than 2:00/100m. I think it took me a little over an hour for my first 2km open water swim. I joined a masters swim club at the end of that season and got a lot faster by the beginning of the 2004. By 2005, I averaged about 1:45/100m. Haven't gotten much faster since 2005 because I haven't been concentrated on swimming, but Masters swimming does work! |

I'm sure this has been suggested but have you had your form analyzed? Really- swimming relies on efficiency so if you're swimming incorrectly, however comfortable that may be for you, you'll never be any faster I've had an instructor take a look and give me some drills, but to be honest, why is it so hard to believe that some people are just simply slow swimmers and there's nothing that can be done to make them better? I'm sure I can be a more efficient swimmer, but that doesn't necessarily translate into speed. I can say that while I'm not afraid of the water, I'm terribly, terribly uncomfortable in it and nothing that I've tried has worked. I just don't have the patience to deal with it There you have it.... I failed miserably (in my opinion) in the OWS at my first 4 triathlons. I always finished, but I was way back behind the slow "swimmers". Now I'm consistently in the top 1/3 of swimmers at the 1/2 IM distance. Once you get the form down, it's a blue-collar thing in that you have to put in the work to get faster. Maybe you'll never be faster than 1:45 per 100 yards. But if you work at it and you can 1:45/100 21 times, you've got a decent 1/2 IM swim. FWIW I think that's the case for me: Fastest Pool 100: 1:25, but that was with open turns a year ago and I don't do pool time trials any more. The wetsuit helps me quite a bit, since there's only 10 seconds per 100 difference between that very comfortable 1.2 mile effort and a lung-busting effort in the pool.

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? spokes - 2007-11-07 2:40 PM You are right to a point. Somepeople just aren't designed IMO, others might disagree, to be fast swimmers. I know I am not really slow even though I feel like it. I know what the right form should look like (I think) but it is making my body do it. In my mind I muscle threw the water more than anything. I just see fast swimmers and they look so effortless and I want to be like that so until I can hold 1:30 or so I won't feel anywhere near fast.jbjboc - 2007-11-07 12:32 PM spokes - 2007-11-07 12:28 PM kproudfoot - 2007-11-07 12:22 PM I average around 2:00 in races. It actually helped me out greatly and I did not even do that many drills. I just read the beginning and it made alot of sense. I still don't even do many drills. Usually just jump in the water and go. I do break up my swim sometimes into sets and even bought paddles but rarely use them. In fairness though I am probably built to be a swimmer (6'7", very lean with extremely skinny legs) but never really swam growing up other than messing around in pools. I am learning from scratch and really all on my own. If you can make your body flat in the water to where your legs are not sinking and you have good rotation and keep your elbows up, do not cross your arms over your center line, etc. you will swim a decent speed. |

Master 1790 Tyler, TX | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? 100 yards 25 years ago: 49.9 seconds 100 yards now: Praying I can still break one minute this coming May.... Current Oly triathlon pace with wetsuit (and not getting tired): about 1:30 per 100 yards Don't get discouraged if your times aren't as fast as those who post here. Consistant swimming and good technique will get you faster, but it doesn't come as naturally as running and biking. FWIW, most triathletes aren't very fast swimmers (by swimming standards, anyway), and the faster swimmers tend not to win the triathlons.....

New user 45 Landenberg, PA | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? Last masters season swam a 1:02 100yd. Trying for under a minute this season (I've been trying for a while!). Average 1:30-1:40 in the 2 olys I've done. Training I'm usually between 1:15-1:20 on a set of 10, 100s with 30-45 sec. rest between. Sufficient rest between repeats is key to keeping and training good form. Good form requires a lot less effort to go faster as others have pointed out! Keep at it and good luck! |
