Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group Matt, sorry about your furstrations. I know how it feels when you think everything on your bike is going to break! There can be a lot of causes to why your chain would come off. But since you have a loose shifter as well, I would recommend taking it into your LBS to have them look at it. Or maybe someone who is experienced with tunning their own bike. My guess is the fix is simple, but difficult to diagnose without seeing it up close. As for the trainer...do you have a trainer skewer? They are much more beefy that ensures the trainer only engages the skewer and doesn't press up against the frame. No part of the trainer should ever touch the paint on your frame. It should only touch each side of the rear skewer and your rear tire. And yes, if a trainer can handle your road bike, it should handle your tri bike just fine assuming they have the same wheel size (700cc). |

I plan on taking the bike to a neighbor who is a cycling & multisport coach and will have him look at the shifter and make the fix. The trainer still bugs me though. I have a Travel Trac Fluid trainer and it doesnt look like it rubs the frame (where the rear wheel attaches, is Fork the correct term?) but I can't explain why I would have paint chip off during the ride. Is it possible that I am tightening the trainer too much? I thought that after the bike (with trainer skewer) was mounted on the trainer and the sides were in the holes, you should tighten it until it doesnt move when you gently move it side to side. |

Hit the wall and couldn't get my hr up. Pure fatigue I think, but I also maxed out my training this week and with work it will naturally go down next week. Was a bit scary as was almost to the point of calling my wife to pick me up, but I found a convenience store and ate and drank my way to get enough strength to get home. Love training, but so entices your odd has a nice way of saying.... REST lol. Fred, looking back do you notice any clues leading up to your bonk? In your experience, what are some signs to watch out for to prevent/mitigate something like that? Well, my guess.... riding 200 miles in 5 days, some of them pretty hard played a role in my demise. Taking a total rest day (well I was in surgery and am on call for 24 hrs, so rest is a sort of term) from training. I am going to do an interesting workout tomorrow: Ride 1 hr fairly hard and then run 10 miles. We will see what happens I really meant to ask, when you look back, if you noticed anything while you were biking that was off. Such as, was your HR and effort not matching correctly? Dizzy? If I'm riding, what are some body responses that would clue me in that I might hit the wall? I dont think I have to worry about riding 200 miles in 5 days Thanks! |

I have a few more hours of work left and then I hope to do my run heavy brick. It's funny I don't like doing many bricks in general but always liked the one that I had mentioned above. Question for all the group?? What's your most and least favorite workout? Least favorite is longish VO2 max intervals on the trainer. Most favorite would probably be a 2-3 hour ride outside at a good strong steady pace. That or a set of 100s in the pool on a tough interval. Most favorite activity that perhaps isn't so much of a big workout is an open water swim. That's my happy place. |

Question for all the group?? What's your most and least favorite workout? Most favorite = long runs...I'm most comfortable on the run and there's less to think about so I can get into a groove and just relax. Least favorite = OWS...I'm not a great swimmer anyway and I haven't rid myself of the OWS monkey on my back yet. Working on it, but it's slow. |

Love the long run, but long swimming is just as enjoyable now. Least favorite is starting a core routine when I had a long, hard day at work. I am always glad I did it in the end, but the motivation is tough. Yesterday was the first day starting the BT HIM plan, and I already had to modify it. The kick board drill gave me a huge cramp in the legs, so I cut that short. I extended the cool down to finish with 2650 yds. Instead of a longer run, I just did a quick 1 mile. I did a longer run on Sunday, so I didn't want to put back to back long runs in because I am injury prone in the IT band. I'm modifying the 'Day Off' also. Haven't you all heard? Wednesday is the new Saturday. |

Master 2500 Crab Cake City | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group Most favorite workout would be speed interval runs and long slow runs. It is funny because running used to be my least favorite but now I love it. Least favorite would be hill intervals on the bike. Even though I have lost a ton of weight, I am still horrible on hills and need to get better. |

Question for all the group?? What's your most and least favorite workout? Least favorite is a a long ride against a headwind....I become a giant baby sometimes! RPE feels sky-high, but HR is low enough to tell me that I'm being a baby. Favorite workout has recently shifted to my master's swim sessions -- a fun, challenging workout that I don't have to make up on my own (with a tiny bit of competition thrown in there) has jumped to the top recently. |

Veteran 403 Maryland | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group Question. How reliable is resting heart rate metric for measuring fatigue? I have been watching mine consistently since January. Seems to have been pretty accurate, on Monday's rest day, is usually a bit higher than normal. Just wondering what the group has experienced. I don't base workouts off it, just fun to watch. Once it was really high and I felt tired, so I did call it a forced rest day. Edited by bgeyeguy 2013-05-07 8:45 AM |

New user 18 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group Trainer and stretching this morning, hoping for an OWS this afternoon but might be a pool swim if I can't find anyone to go to the lake with me. I am hoping to get 1000 yds in before my hamstring/knee issue flares up. (Has anyone swam with a knee sleeve?) Anyone have experience with getting over a pulled hamstring and/or baker's cyst. I am not 100% sure if I have the later but from previous experience I am thinking I have a baker's cyst as well as the pulled hamstring. Plan to go to the sports medcine doctor tomorrow morning to see what I can do about racing this weekend. (Probably not a PR but just race experience, esp. the OWS swim part.) |

Master 1531 TORONTO | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group Fave workout would be an outdoor long ride or run. Least favourite would be a short hard interval session on the trainer. Got my swim in this morning - will run home from work tonight. I was literally one foot out the door with my stuff when I remembered I needed to grab my runners!!! Could have been a frustrating barefoot run home today!!! Thanks for the thoughts on the salt tabs. I think last time I needed them as I overhydrated with plain water. I like pretzels and will pack them for my run this time. I was offered some at 17km and was too polite - taking only 2 or 3 and they tasted SO GOOD - but then they had run out at every subsequent aid station which made me grumpy! |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group Sorry I've been AWOL. This past weekend I went down to Miami for a sprint tri. Got a massive cold on Saturday and almost bailed on the race Sunday. Decided to start the swim, just take it easy and see how I felt. Well, the cool water did wonders and I was able to push a bit on the bike and run and managed to place 2d in my AG. My cold has been pretty bad the last couple of days, so I've stayed home and haven't done anything but sleep and watch bad day time TV. So, no training for me today, but tomorrow I expect to be back at it with a morning swim and evening TRX class. |
