I think my coach may be nice to me this week after trying to kill me on New Year's with my tiny swim!

Pfffft. Canadians I have no quibble with. They have maple syrup, and Tim Hortons, and poutine!!!

I grew up in Colorado so Texans are an invasive species, much like Californicans and tamarisk

Y'all may be Texans and Canuckistanis and Canucks in TX BUT I SANG THE ANTHEM FOR THE 2012 OLYMPICS BEER FRIDGE!

Oh, yes, Canadians are the best.  But you should stay in Canada, like me.  Texas is full of Texans.  And other 'Mericans.

Or you got Germans like me living in Texas. So not only Texans and 'Mericans.

And we have a guy in Germany (is he German)? My German citizenship is currently in process. My husband and I (and sister) are moving there, but for now just a few months at a time.

Originally posted by Jet Black Wow, so many new and old faces on here! I’m kind of ADD, so I had to do a book report type of exercise to make sure I read everyone’s bio’s in detail. Jen – good luck with the home reno, that sound super stressful! Hope you can use SBR to blow off some steam! Lisa – That is awesome that you’re cleared to swim and bike!! Adam – Welcome aboard! My advice is definitely make a plan and stick to it for your 70.3. It’s going to take a lot of hours of training to get through that in a reasonable amount of time. I used the free plan on here last year for my first 70.3 and it was ok. It got me through with a respectable time, but I don’t feel like it had enough running in it, especially in the last 6 weeks. Good luck! Karen – good to see the coach is pushing you! How are you liking it so far? Judi – I’m right there with you, this group is hard to keep up with lol! My wife loves the beach body videos. She did a mix of T25 and 21 day fix for over a year, and is now doing an insanity class a couple of times a week and also just started the new Hammer/Chisel program. Good luck rebuilding the run! Kevin – welcome! If you’re not on strava, get on there! It’s super motivating to see everyone’s workouts every day. And if you’re competitive, the manatee leader board provides extra motivation! Tom – welcome! Our kids are the same age, fun times! I haven’t been at this long, but I feel what success I’ve had is due to planning, planning and more planning. Plan out your season, or at least decide what your A race is for the year, then build a training plan around that. Again, the free plans on this site are pretty good. Or you can use training peaks and purchase plans there. Dicky – welcome! Good luck to you and your wife with the IVF, sending positive thoughts your way. Dave – welcome! Those are some awesome races you have planned this year! Stacey – you are a great manatee! Post more pics of those puppies though! Darren – Are you going to share that cake or what? Very cool race, I’ll definitely be following along! Laura (Daffodil) – welcome! Sounds like you have a wealth of experience, thanks for joining! Mark – welcome! Those are some speedy HM times! Jim – welcome to the manatees! I’m doing my first IM this year as well, good luck with all the training! Ox – I’m similar, I usually find the time to read all the posts, but not always reply, guess that should be my new years resolution. Ann-Marie – Cross fit?!?!! Say it ain’t so! And the 70.3……dooooooooooeeeeeeiiiiiiiitttttttttt!!!!!! Markus – welcome fellow Houstonian! Wow, that is quite and incredible story of perseverance! Huge congrats on overcoming the illness and completing not only 1 tri but 3 last year! Well done! Connor – welcome! That is so awesome that you didn’t listen to the Dr’s and are now kicking all kinds of butt! Robin – Glad to hear you won’t be kicking my butt on strava all year! Hope the limb behaves this year. Sounds like if you were ever going to get it worked on again, this might be a good year for it. SQUIRL!!!! Mary G – welcome back! That’s quite the race lineup for this year, love it! Janyne – the lifeblood of the manatees!! You are incredible! Thank you for all you do to keep this group going and organized! Melanie – better get that training in gear, that’s quite a race plan for the year! Ben – hope the clavicle heals up quickly, I know you want to get out there on your bike(s)! Monica – looking forward to kicking azz at IMTX with you!! Good luck with the training! TJ – You had me at beer! Can’t wait for you to kick that 50k’s butt! Request for more scenery pics on strava, been missing those lately. Chris – the other lifeblood of the manatees! Thanks for the inspires, it’s so nice for you to do that as much as you do. And you know Janyne is right! I hate swimming, well yeah, I hate swimming. But I hate it much less when doing intervals with a group. Makes the time go by much faster. And the group keeps you honest! David A – welcome! huge congrats on the weight loss, that’s very impressive! Another first time IM’er this year, nice! That’s three of us so far I think. Yanti – You are an animal!! (or crazy lol) That is one ridiculous race schedule! So you blame 2 short tri’s on Stacey, who the hell do you blame for the 5 IMs and 10k swim?!?!! Justin – welcome! Another Texan, nice. And you’re not in my age group anymore (I aged up this year), so we can be friends. I’m also self-trained. Looked into a coach end of last year but it didn’t work out and I like doing my own thing anyway.

x2 to all of this!

You rock, Jetson.

The 5 IMs (OK, just 3 of them) are WTC's fault and the 20K swim is my husband Kingsley's fault.

I need some help Manatees. My mum and my sisters have decided that they are going to do a HM with me at the end of August. They aren't currently runners and are all over 40. They are thinking, finish not fast, and run walk.

They have asked me to do them up a training plan. The HM is 33 weeks away, so I am thinking a 30 week plan (by the time I get it done and to them). They can all walk for at least 45 minutes at a decent pace so they aren't total couch dwellers. Where do it start?

I have said for now they have to be walking for at least 30 minutes a day four times a week and 45 minutes once a week. What are your thoughts from there?

Hi

After reading all the posts I am well and truly motivated now for 2016, I had planned on doing three sprint tri's this year to get me in the swing of things but I am now thinking of doing a sprint in may and then an olympic distance in July. Do you think this is a realistic aim or should I stick with just the sprints?

thanks

Whoa, I walked away from the thread yesterday and now we're at over 10 pages! I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up, but, like Judi, I'm an inspire fiend. Keep those logs up to date and I'll give you some love there.

My name is Laura, and Vivaldi the Super Pup Papillon is my best friend. She'll be 11 next month.
I eloped back in May, so I guess I'm a newlywed. We've been together since 2008, so it doesn't really feel like it.
I joined BT in 2005, have done a couple sprints, but never really felt bitten by the tri bug. Last year I turned it around and started putting in some consistency with my workouts. Now for the 2016 season I'm looking toward a Sprint in the spring, Oly in the Fall, and a few run races. Right now, swimming is my favorite.

Sorry to have to end this on a downer, but veteran Manatees will remember that a few months ago my Aunt B was in ICU. She's there again...sepsis. The infections simply won't go away. Please send healing thoughts!

It's like facebook for exercisers. Just go to strava.com and setup an account. Chris can add you to the manatees. Follow us other manatees and you'll see our workouts pop up when we do them. You can link strava to your garmin account so that the workouts are automatically loaded into strava from garmin.

Strava also has some safety/privacy features including having people request to follow you (so not everyone can see your stuff) and hiding some locations (home address/office/school) from maps.  The second feature just blurs it a little bit so people might now my exact street address or whatever.  These might make your parents/coach more comfortable.  I use them because I usually run alone.  I mean, it's right by the police station and I don't feel unsafe or anything but I don't want to invite problems!

All righty group, I believe we stand at 39 current members, which is a bit large, but not unmanageable. Outside of the returning Manatees who are always welcome, we are going to button it up and close it down. We currently have this roster:

IndoIronYanti (Yanti)
Erin (4agoodlife)
Laura Y (Atlantia)
Judi (QueenZipp)
Chris (cdban66)
Stacey (StaceyK)
Jen (Juniperjen)
Lisa (lisac957)
Janyne (jmkizer)
Ben (brigby1)
TJ (rrrunner)
Mary G (marysia83)
Melanie (melbo55)
Darren (Richardsdrr)
Ann-Marie (amd723)
Karen (Hotrunner)
Kirsten (IronOx)
Monica (blueyedBikergirl)
Robin (fortissimo)
Sean (Jet Black)
Robin (ceilidh)
Dicky (superfunkyfresh)
Tom S (tomsimper)
Dave (DaveL)
Mark (Lighttower)
Connor (CRFTX2001)
Markus (johnthecat)
Adam (awm007)
Jim (JBacarella)
Laura J (Daffodil)
Kevin (microdoc)
David (RookeyDavid)
Justin (TXTriRook)
Maria (Maria527)
Steve (popsracer)
Mary S (laffinrock)
Eric (emcmino)

For those that are interested, I have a current roster/table in my logs. I believe that Janyne will have one as well, feel free to grab a copy if you want it. Please open up your logs, at least to one another. Unless your name is Karen and you live Vietman and have an online coach that is trying to kill you! As you firm up race plans, please keep those in your logs as well.  We love to cheer!

I am really looking forward to getting to know all of the folks in here, no matter how far flung you may be. It's little like the UN in here. Participate as much or as little as you like (although more is always more fun). We'll discuss a bunch of stuff, sometimes athletic, sometimes life, occasionally triathlon and all of it will interest someone. Feel free to ask questions and be prepared for a variety of answers.

STORY: I started training/racing in 2009.  I raced heavily for 5 years then burned out. I took last year off, lost fitness and gained weight, so I'm planning on a couple of races this year to get me moving again.

FAMILY STATUS: Engaged

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm beginning to build back up after a year off and weight gain, so it is slow going. Focused on running for now, strength training, and some spin classes.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS:
March - 5K
April - Half Marathon
June - Sprint Tri and/or Double Sprint
October - Half Iron

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I want to get into a manageable routine that will keep me fit but not burn me out.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I will be a good Manatee because I have a lot of experience to share.

Welcome, Maria!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
