Jason is through 7.4 miles in 1:30 - it actually looks like he slowed down a bit to let Hines Ward catch up. Jason is such a glom hound I bet he is just trying to get some TV time.

Come on, Jason - keep it up!

Looks like your colleague pulled off the AG win with an 8:40ish time.  That's incredible!

I'm seeing one just a few minutes ahead at 8:37:xx. Still trying to contemplate this. 16th overall.

Fastest age group women was 10th on that side.

Well aware of the differences in age group vs pro racing. Still find it interesting to see.

Not the finishing time I was hoping for but I wouldn't change a thing. The experience is something I'll remember for the rest of my life.

More details later, but I'm exhausted.

I think he get 2nd OA amateur, 20th with the pros...pretty amazing for a guy who works a 40+ hour week, 40 year old.
He beat Crowie, Jacobs and a bunch of others despite a 7 minute slower swim.
He outbiked O'Donnel and ran sub 3h

Ahh, I was just basing it on what they said in the live feed when he crossed the line.

I didn't see that. What did they say ?

I think he won 40-44 but there seems to be one guy in 30-35 faster than him. It's hard to get the overall amateur standings.

I just happened to see him cross and noted it was an AG'er based on the number.  The commentators said it was the first AG athlete to cross the line.  Someone else could have easily come in without them seeing though.

You are right, the winner of 30-34 went 8:37.  It's pretty sick what those guys can do.

The only real difference between those guys and the pros is the swim.  Lots of pros in the top 10 rode around 4:30 and ran just under 3 but they all swam 51 vs the 1:00 to 1:10 of the AG guys.

True. The other HUGE difference is the way the top pro's race. People were wondering why the top men finishers didn't have great run times (i.e.; Miranda beat most of them and the top AGers were close). However, the pro's race strategically moreso. When Kienle and McKenzie get out in front, the others have to ride out of their comfort zones and then everyone kind of blows up a bit. I guess what I'm saying is that Kienle and Van Lierde and McKenzie can all run in the 2:40s if they were to have ridden 10' slower.... but they just don't race that way. It's a reason why you really can't DIRECTLY compare the top amateurs times with the pro's.

For sure, completely different strategies.

RR is going to take a few days to muster all my thoughts together but just a brief recap.

First of all at least 2 out of my 3 picks for the podium made the top 5 with Kienle and O'Donnell.

And I did get to run with Hines Ward for about a mile. Dude was very steady. Not much of a small talk guy though, he was just in his own zone. There was a photographer on a motorcycle in front of him at the time so I'm sure I got some photos with him...especially since we were both in refuel kits.

And arend, I did make it to hualalai just before the hot corner when van lierde passed me so I very well could have been on tv. I had no idea what was going on until after it happened.

The last 30 miles of the bike was brutal. I have heard stories about it but I had no idea. The run was overcast, thank god, but it was still hot. I couldn't keep my hr down andI I was incorporating walking in the first mile. Side stiches were a problem pretty much the whole run.

The finish line was surreal. Nothing hurt anymore and I had the line to myself.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
