![]() I agree that you should stick with the faster lane unless you can't make the send off and they start lapping you. My alternate strokes suck, and I always go last in my lane during those sets. I ALWAYS jump the gun on my send off to get more of a draft for as long as I can. LOL. Either way, I'm working hard. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just realized I have not swam since January some time. Considering splashing around tomorrow morning with the tri club. My intent was to start swimming 3x week 10 weeks out from my first 'A' race which would be next week...so I guess I am overachieving not surprising my bike and run are in really good shape! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kcarroll - 2013-03-05 10:47 AM Question for the fishies. I jumped up a lane in Masters this morning. This lane sets their 100's about 10 secs faster than the lane I normally swim in. For reference, 1:50 is my very best 100 and I can only hold that for about 3-4 before dropping to 1:55 or 2:00. I was able to hang on in the back but there was some drafting for sure. It's a very relaxed group from my tri-club, if that makes a difference. If I drop down a lane, I'll be the lead swimmer 90% of the time. Am I better off swimming off lead in a slower lane or holding on to the back (and drafting when necessary) of a faster lane? Hope that makes sense. Faster lane. It tends to push me harder than leading the slower lane. But when I do lead the slower lane I try not to slack off and come in close to the interval. If I'm on a 1:40/100 in the slower lane, I try to come in at 1:30 or better, at least for the first 3 or 4 :P Sometimes the wheels come off a little. What has helped my swimming lately is when I swim on my own, I try a set of 100's or 200's with a pretty tough interval. That helps me be ready for the fish lane next time I'm in there. |

![]() | ![]() I'm not a fish Kim (I'm more like the anti-fish) but I agree, faster lane. You'll benefit from being pushed, and it will benefit your run and bike as well with the awesome cardio workout you'll get. I bet it doesn't take too long before your able to feel more comfortable there |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am just trying for the life of me to come up with a good reason to stay in the slow lane (you know, just to be in the minority) but I can't. I too have benefited greatly from laning-up, sucking feet, and skipping a 50 here and there. Do it. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() had a mri done on my arm and found out i have a ligament tear at the elbow. the surgeon feels that it will heal by itself. any bigger and he would have to go in. strict orders from him though. the arm stays out of a sling to keep it moving but nothing goes into the palm for weight until april 1, the next checkup. thats why i'm doing the one finger hunt and peck typing. still have extensive swelling in the arm and he said it will probably be there another week or so. no wrist or knuckles. just fingers sticking out of the end. here i was thinking this year i would get it all together. guess i can't complain to much since i could have been killed. good news is my streak is still going. put the fixie in the trainer to keep it going. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Spent about an hour with my PT this afternoon to work on my shoulder. After Yoga last night I began to notice that my right shoulder was really tight, and by the time I went to bed it was sore - soft tissue, not joint. It kinda kept me tossing and turning all night as I couldn't really get comfortable. Got up this morning and went to masters and it was not really a limiter, but it did have me avoiding breathing to the left much, which is my dominant side. So I got good off-side breathing practice (lemonade from lemons). I Got my run in without much trouble, but it did make it hard to look over my left shoulder at intersections, etc. Since this is the year to really "take sh*t seriously" with no waiting around for it to magically heal itself or doing any internet diagnosis, I got all crazy and just made an appointment with my PT for the afternoon. Seems that my thoracic and lumbar spine was locked (my Pilates instructor commented on just that thing last Thursday and we spent a good bit of time working on it) and the muscles in my right shoulder spasmed last night trying to protect it. So one hour of ART and Graston, followed up with EMS and icing. Already feeling a good bit better. |

Kev - that actually all sounds like really, really good news, all things considered. Do what the Doc says and I will bet you will be back quicker than they think. And I for one am glad to hear that the streak is alive and well! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My son won his cross country meet today. I have to admit, I was more nervous that he was. It was a 2 loop course, he came in on the first loop way out ahead and I was hoping he wouldn't blow up but he held on and won by a good 10 seconds. He beat his time from last year on that course by almost a minute! Proud mama here! ![]() |

I really need to get to my PT over my shoulder as well but mine is an hour and a half away... I live with problems for way to long cause of it even though she always gets me fixed up nearly instantly. |

Good news all things considering. I dislocated my elbow once and they were super concerned about me getting full mobility back. They have any concerns about that with you? Just took some regular PT for me to keep everything loose as it healed. |

I come from a gifted family, including a cousin in the Canadian sports hall of fame for all things, triathlon. (my father is in there as well but for hockey) Nice job on the race. Sounds like he got your running talent |

That's all I've ever had (after a race), and while I feel great after, during is pure h@ll. Good for you for getting in right away. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I am sick. Again. The same thing happened last winter. I just can't seem to keep consistent training going in the winter. I catch every single thing that comes through. This time, I think it is strep. I will head into the doctor tomorrow. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a good swim in the pool this morning. The kids were coming off of a taper/swim meet so not a ton of distance and plenty of rest. Also have a 45 min run scheduled for lunch. Weather is borderline for shorts with sun and temps 2-3 degrees above freezing and looks like it will be all week, hoping this stays as a trend.... |

For many year, I was very skeptical of chiropractors....in the past few months, I've been going to on for ART for my knee issues and have become a big believer. A few weeks ago, I was having some shoulder issues and asked him to take a look....I think it took two sessions and my shoulder was back to feeling really good! He can bring me nearly to tears when working on my hip, quads, and shoulder....but I forgive him because he makes me feel soooooooo much better! Hope you're back to feeling great within a couple sessions as well! |

Great to hear that you're able to keep the streak alive! You mentioned something about getting x number of indoor rides to count toward your streak, right? Hopefully the doc will give you the green light to get outside (following your wife's rules, of course!) and keep it going. Hope the pain is manageable and that the ligament tear does, indeed, heal itself. |

Hope that makes sense. Like the others said, I'd stick it out in the faster lane until you feel comfortable. I was at the top of my old lane and found it harder to push than when I jumped up a lane and was then at the bottom. I now push harder trying to "hang on" or on longer sets, my goal often becomes to not get lapped! On a side note, we had a new swimmer join our master's group last week. Our master's group is quite tri-centric, which means there aren't a ton of swimmers with an actual swimming background. Anyways, new guy swam competitively through high school and apparently used to swim 100's on 0:55!! He's "out of shape" as he hasn't been in the pool since October, but he's still very fast....and it's so pretty to watch good swimmers swim. They look like they're putting out very little effort, but still blasting through the water at an incredible pace. |
