My 2 cents:

1. Agree on Garmin.  I have the 705 and LOVE it.

2. Agree on pedals and biking shoes.  Although there are those on this site that are much more biking experts than I, I think clipping in with pedals and biking shoes (rather than running shoes) provides a significant upgrade in terms of efficiency of pedal stroke.  I have found Speedplay the easiest because you do not have to worry whether the pedal is right-side-up or upside down.  I have Sidi shoes, but any number of shoes would work.

3&4:  Well done on the swim and run improvements.  As for your questions, I will let others with more expertise in those areas chime in.

-William

losta - 2010-01-21 11:17 PM 1-The best would be a Garmin 305, 310XT, 500 or 705, next best cateye or other with wireless cadence 2-Get clipless pedals and bike shoes suggest Look Keo, Shimano SPD or Speedplay pedals, bike shoes Sidi, Specialized, Shimano 3-Great news on the swim congrats! I would either add a bit more distance(not more than 10% a week) and/or do speedwork and work on your swim mechanics 4-work on running longer but increase distance slowly, otherwise injury could result. It's ok to walk, some people can run faster overall when they take walk breaks than they do purely running Did I miss something? Why are you laying off cycling?
kickitinok - 2010-01-20 9:55 PM

Hello dear MG - hope everyone is having a great evening.

I have a few more questions:

1. What kind of bike computer should I buy for my new road bike? My bike has clips...should I get some bike shoes, or just wear my running shoes for the bike portion of the race?

2. I'm still confused as what to wear come race time. There are so many options. I do know that I want a wet suit for OWS's, but what do I wear under the wet suit? My bike clothes, my swimsuit, a tri suit, commando??? I'm still at a loss as to whether I need a one piece tri suit, or a two piece. (A special shout-out to kkcbelle for getting me hooked on Skirtsports clothing - adorable and now I want to spend $500 on all the cool stuff I've found there.

3. My swimming is going great - endurance-wise. I really don't feel the need to rest very often at all...I'm hardly ever out of breath, and I'm now up to 1500 yards. Should I try to add more distance to my swims, or should I stay where I'm at until I don't need to rest between sets at all? Or....should I try to increase speed to my existing swim plan?

4. Regarding my run - I can comfortably run 2 miles without stopping to walk now (yay!). Should I continue to keep running this distance for a while, or should I add maybe .5 mile on the run? Or should I add a .5 mile walk? Or should I try to run another mile?

I know that my BT training plan tells me what I need to do, but since I'm laying off cycling right now, I figured my body could handle more in the areas of swim/run.

My last workout is in the bag before we head for vacation!  While I love my bike, I will not miss it for these 5 days!

Ironically Trevor, my second breakfast is almost always an open faced egg sandwich after a glass of chocolate milk.  Mine is a little different--1/2 piece of toast, fried egg in Coconut Oil, .2 oz of cheese and low fat mayo....YUMMY!  That breakfast provides exactly the number of carbs to protein I need to eat post heavy workout.....you are on to something (of course you normally would work out first )

I have the 2008 version of the sleeveless that I got for $99 too.  I have had no problems with tears/holes.  My winter nails and my summer nails are pretty much the sameWink

I have to decide if I should get her the sleeveless or full.  The first tri she is doing was my first last year and the water temp was 61 deg.  I was fine with warm up and adreline (and a neoprene swim cap)...not sure how she will like it though.  Last year the fulls were only $149 which was another steal...I see now they are $199.

Thanks for the links

Happy Friday group!  No races this weekend.  Just a bunch of workouts and I am already body tired and sore plus I'm behind on sleep.  Looking forward to Sunday afternoon when workouts are done and we can sit around watching the championship games.

I think I'll be rooting for the old man b/c he's older than I am and Norv to stick to Dan Snyder.  I love the fact that he is still coaching the same team after 10 yrs. when Snyder fired him w/o even giving him a chance.

I am too sore from weight training last night and running to do anything today. Tomorrow's plan after work is to nail out traps, shoulders, back, quads, hammies, calves, shins and then try for a distance run.

Just wanted to throw this out there if anyone is interested, but I purchased a KK trainer from bicycle outfitters indy so I am now on the mailing list, but they sent me a 20% coupon A95436.  Good for up to 100 bucks off.  Figured I would help someone out if they were in the market for a trainer, they also sell other products, but I will probably not be ordering anything or putting it to use.

I am in no way shape or form related to them, just found that was the cheapest place to get the trainer and this should help a good amount!

1 hour swim with some drills then a 1500, and then another hour on the bike.  Hopefully my legs have a bit more in them than they have recently!

kickitinok - 2010-01-22 12:18 AM

Kyla - I practiced some self-restraint and only purchased a pair of tri shorts and a t shirt. It wasn't easy, but I do need to have money for food this month.

Andy - I am definitely going to do some drills during tomorrow's swim. Thanks for the advice on that. Can you recommend any good speed drills or form drills?

Lisa - I decided to lay off the biking a little, but not totally. I want to focus on my swim/walk (I started on those from scratch - whereas I do have a bit of cycling endurance under my belt) until I'm fairly comfortable I can do the distances by race time. I am, however, going on a long ride this weekend on my pretty pretty girliefied Specialized bike

There are four or five drills that I use consistently now - catchup drill, fist drill, single arm, finger tip drag, and kick drill.  Oh yeah, don't forget stroke count drills.  Most of these drills are described here.  But a google search or you tube search will probably give you video to look at.  I generally do the drills for 25 yards or so and will combine a couple into a set that is repeated (this comes from swimplan.com) like 25 single arm / 25 kick / 25 drag / 25 swim - repeat 4 to 6 times.  Try swimplan.com for some workouts, I have been happy with it so far...

Man...I've already been doing these. Swimplan.com has me do them. I'm still slow, but hey....at least I'm improving. Will continue with the drills.

Yet another question: My ears are starting to hurt from all the water trapped in them. What do I do? Should I wear ear plugs each time I swim, or will the water eventually drain?
