Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread You are within 1/4 mile of the shore on either side of you and there are boats all up and down the channel the whole way. There was a huge white yacht looking thing at the point you have to take a left. Navigation is about the least of your worries on the swim. Actually, if you're comfortable swimming the distance there are no worries on the swim |

That is great news, I did a race in a river once and I swam into sunken trees and into the oncoming lane so I got a fist in my face by someone who was coming downstream. Cheers Arne |

My training is lagging just a bit. Lots of swims in the 1800-2100 meter range with time being an issue. Tried for a long swim yesterday and got about 2300 yards in when lightning/thunder closed the pool. My long rides have been in the 2-3 hr mark but still building up and plan Sept/early oct as my long rides/swims. My rides have been in the 18-19 mph range. Have been considering finding a group to ride with but so far just been riding occasionally with another person from another relay group doing B2B. Overall feel comfortable I will finish my parts of the relay. Our group found a nice place to rent in Wrightsville beach, not too far off of T1 (I think the swim portion doesn't go directly by us but it is close. Should avg about $300 per person and with having a kitchen the savings on eating out should keep the price in line with staying at a hotel. Supposedly has a BBQ on the dock so one night will be steaks and beers (steaks are considered carbo loading and I won't hear otherwise! ;> Gary, Bring some boudan, oysters, and shrimp and I will meet you. I would tell you crawfish but I know they will just be coming into season and small. Are the folks you are staying with also from Lousiana? There are 5 in our group. Three (including myself) from Louisiana but I am not a Louisiana native having been born and raised a so. Calif boy (also lived in Kansas and Wisconsin). For the other two, one from SC and another from Jersey (I believe) and both are BTers. If I can figure out how to get a big of boudin balls on the airplane we will be set! Not an oyster fan but LOVE shrimp. Doubt I could get a 60lb sack of live crawfish on the plane to have a decent crawfish boil even if they were in season. LOL - Not sure a crawfish boil would the best prerace meal anyway! Nor the Boudan balls! Where are you guys staying while you are there? I am the Fairfield Suites. Titeloops who is also racing from Raleigh, NC is staying there as well. |

Is this correct? If so, do we then swim around 300yds to get towards the middle of the channel where the current is stronger? DIdnt realize the channel was one half mile wide where we were swimming. |

I did the half last year and didn't pay that much attention to the upper end of the full's swim route, that may be. I know the channel is probably 1/2-3/4 mile wide. I doubt it's a full mile at any point. The thing is well marked. This if from someone who was swimming with foggy goggles last year |

The full looks like it stars at the southernmost building on Wrightsville and the half starts closer to the causeway. Does that sound right? |

Titeloops who is also racing from Raleigh, NC is staying there as well. We found a duplex to rent that will fit the 5 of us plus one spouse and a kid. Its in wrightsville beach down the road from where the half group will start their swim. With that many people it was just easier and probably almost as cheap as a hotel. Plus we will have a kitchen so we will be cooking some of our own meals. Save a little money over eating at restaurants all the time. |

Master 2490 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread arnenes - 2010-08-21 6:08 PM Hi all I have a question that I guess might be considered to be a wimps nerves. I did the Norseman Extreme Triathlon last year and the swim was in 1500 feet deep water. I am the worst navigator and I solved this problem by swimming very close to the cliffs so I could see the mountain side drop into the deep dark. As long as I had a cliff on one side and darkness on the other I was fine and right on target. My open water training takes place up and down in front of a nice beach, I follow the wave pattern on the bottom. So here is my question: In the channel we will be swimming can we see the bottom? or are there other distinct navigation aids? Cheeers
Norseman!! That race looks totally badass! |

The full looks like it stars at the southernmost building on Wrightsville and the half starts closer to the causeway. Does that sound right? Yep, but there is no buildings. It's at the southern tip where there are buildings and an area to drop a clothing bag, then walk through the sand to the southern most point in view of the ocean. There's only two things to remember, swim out and keep the first buoy on your right, the next marker that comes into play is at the turn which will be there for both the half and full is a boat with a "Squiqqly Man" like you'd see in front of a used car lot or store to draw attention, keep that on your left, then head for the marina. Just remember no other buoys come into play and are simply course markers as I witnessed several people swimming to one out of the way thinking they had to go around it and it had to add quite a bit of time and distance to there race. This was covered real well in the pre race meeting. Makes it nice since there's plenty of elbow room in the channel. |

How was everyone elses training week? |

Member 35 Greensboro | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread re: The Ironbob/onehourironmen comments-he recommends if you are going to follow the one hour plan it will take a year to build up, etc. Yes, he recommends a long ride on the weekends and then you swim/run during the week. He has his data from his training and another persons training on how over the course of a year-they trained on the rule of one hour per day. What I take away from his book is that training does not have to consume you life. Take the time for family, etc. Skipping a workout or two isn't going to ruin your performance. I really enjoyed the book and found it extremely motivating. It was a fast read and all about Ironman. After reading his book I realized I had to get a jump on my long distance riding. I'm not a cyclist so I tend to put off my rides. I prefer to swim or run. On the training front-Saturday I rode 94 miles in 5:43-I was extremely happy b/c my goal was under 6 hours. |

Expert 1706 NoVA | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Ok so the full swim course was covered---but it's just as simple as was mentioned--and was put in the pre-race meeting---if there is a shore on both sides of you then you are on course! The swim to the first marker (where you have to keep it on your right) isn't that far into the channel but it works to just start to the left side of the start arch and then swim "straight" out to the middle of the channel/marker----the current will assist on pushing you to the right/marker!! Then just stay more to the left since the current is stronger----they have boat traffic stopped for the race so it's a "closed" swim course!!! |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Sorry, no help on the hotels. As for training, things went pretty well this week. I have made some significant improvements in my swimming. I have a sprint coming up in a couple of weeks and hope to see the improvements there. Sept is going to be a bigger bike month for me with some longer rides coming. The only thing I haven't done is started training with HEED as that is what will be served on the course. Everything else they will be offering I have used before. Does anyone know what flavor they will serve? Edited by GaryRM 2010-08-31 6:54 PM |

(Heed is pretty mild flavored in general though. It really just tastes of mild sugar-water.) I would definitely recommend getting used to it if you're going to take it on the course. The first few times I tried Heed I nearly puked. I'm not sure why -- it is not strongly flavored. But now I train with it all the time, no problem. Pretty solid training month for me, apart from swimming.

Master 2202 Canton, Michigan | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Porfirio - 2010-08-31 10:32 AM Please help w/my lodging! You can stay anywhere and not really worry about getting to the start on race morning. Traveling around the Wilmington Wrightsville area is pretty easy at that time of the morning. Otherwise it was a busy area during daylight hours. The choice you have to make depending on if you have a sherpa with you is if whether you want to drive to T1 or downtown. If you have a sherpa it's just as easy to go to T1 and let them drive downtown after you head out on the bike. If your flying solo or with another racer and only have one ride. Reserve a spot on the shuttle as early as possilbe (yeah it fills up well before race week so do it as soon as allowed) and take that from near the Hilton on race morning, that way when you finish you can take the ferry or trolley back to the Hilton and get to your car. There is no shuttle service back to T1 after the race. I noticed last year that some folks had taxi's picking them up at the finish, so that's always an option if you want to park at T1 and not deal with the shuttles, which weren't bad for me after finishing just over 12 hours, but had some long waits for half athletes. Pretty solid? That's a bit of a monster month if you ask me! Mine looks like this, but I was on vacation for 10 days (no bike during that time) and nursing a calf injury (no running for a bit), so the volume is off a little. Trying to crank it up this month and next but won't come close to your totals! :-)

The Heed was in Hammer "regular" bike bottles (and they had different flavors at different aid stations but most of the flavors are mild or subtle---that's in the name!). I THINK the water was regular/standard bottles---maybe with the top unscrewed or something like that!? |

Sorry to be a dork about this but -- the water was in a 20 oz bottle with a sport top like you get at a convenience store or was it in a bottle like you get at a bike shop? Yes, I am stressing about this. I want to confirm that whatever they are using will fit in my cage. Thanks! |
