Hate to do it (it eats into my xbox/general f around time) but I need to force myself to turn everything off so I can get at least 6.5-7 hours of sleep a night.

I hear ya on the sleep. I'm really putting a focus on that though, because I wear out pretty quickly if I only get 6 hours in a night for too many nights in a row. It's so important for recovery and letting our bodies rebuild, but it's also the first thing to go out the window when we're short on time.

I'm with ya. Last year I really made it a point to think of rest as the 5th event (4th being nutrition for me) and that helped me. Need to get back into that frame of mind.

Absolutely. I hope I can make that happen!

Out of curiosity is there anyone else from the BT group that is in the midwest?

Hey Brian,
I'm from Minnesota. Glad that we are getting a little break from the below zero weather. I'm not quite as tough as you and run inside when it's this cold.

That is Brave of you doing a HIM 3-4 weeks prior to an IM, most folks aim for 7 weeks some 6 weeks out, few would do one as close as 5 weeks out. Hope you have a really thick base going by the time you hit your HIM. After that you will be in full taper mode until CDA and hope for the best.

Welcome Champ88!

I moved to North Idaho in the 1980's from Grand Rapids. I live near Cda and have done the CDA IM twice. This year I will volunteer. I am surfing this board for fun. I guess I just cant leave...LOL.

Thanks, yep a little closer to IMCDA than I would prefer(4 weeks out). I peak in my training the following week so I'll be more than ready to enjoy that 3 week taper. My plan is to up my long bike/run days 10% (started doing this at the onset of my plan) so hopefully I'm covering the loss of a long bike/run weekend with that approach will see..

I did my best to maintain my run fitness through the first part if the winter. I was dreading jumping back on the bike and into the pool. After one 2 weeks swimming, I'm back to where I was last season. I just had an incredible ride today where I averaged 212 watts for 1.5 hours and my legs felt incredible during the short brick. After only 2 weeks, I'm beyond motivated to push myself harder then I did last year.

Feeling very lucky with the weather California is having. Its making training very straightforward. Now, for the patience to enjoy this recovery week. Hopefully, I've jinxed our weather, we need the water!

That's some impressive volume in your training logs.  Enjoy the recovery week.

Hey, sorry if I came off as being discouraging your HIM 4 weeks out. I tend to go a bit conservative, but that surely doesn't mean that a younger, more genetically resilient folks can't pull it off just fine.

I am still working on offseason training for a few more weeks trying to gain some speed before building back up.

I completely get your point. 4 weeks is a tad closer to IM than what I would prefer, but still the closest/best fit I can get leading up this year (plus I've never done a HIM and am excited to do one slow and low to get a sense of how much I would enjoy "racing" more of them down the road). Totally valid point.

I'm still in base building mode as well, 3 more weeks before I start any sort of speed work..right now it's all 12-14 hours/week of Z2 for the most part.

Enjoy that CA weather. I'm sitting here in bed at 510am when I should be out doing a 60 minute run however mother nature had other plans...woke up to 8 inches of snow and the wind chill has temps at -5f. Can deal with the cold but not running w/o having a good sense of where the black ice is under all that snow. Anyhow a 1/2 day off (still have a swim later) would probably do me a bit of good (thats what I keep telling myself) as this Saturday is a half marathon

I know, I know I haven't booked a hotel yet. Does anyone have recommendations about holiday inn vs marriott? How practical of a distance to race area, convenient to be, etc... Thanks in advance.

They are right next to each other on Seltice Way x Northwest Blvd. that intersection is about 1-1.5 miles from the city beach and very accessible via the centennial trail or Northwest Blvd.

As for the difference in hotels, they are both new so I would go with what costs less. Not counting the resort, I think they are the next two and three nicest hotels in CDA.

Thanks Andy! I call CDA Resort and they were full several months ago. They did have water view rooms but it was more $$$ and didn't feel it was worth it. Anyone stay at one of those hotels last year? I inquired about the shuttle and holiday inn said they had one for $5 a trip.

There is I believe a marriot out in spokane valley just off of the sullivan exit. not a bad commute to and from the venue. Like 25 minute drive. I know a guy who stayed there last year. had built-in microwave at min I think for those who want to cook their own meals.

Thanks soretaint for drawing my attention to the Troika race.  I've been trying to decide between a 70.3 in Oliver and a 180km training ride on the IMCDA bike course (without requiring 2 weekends away from the family).  Maybe I can do both if I do Troika instead of Oliver

The thing with Troika is it can be hot or it can cold. I thought about doing troika but after this last year with sub 50 degree weather I think I will pass. I am more of a fair weather racer
