Good thing i only do those every 3 months or so, gives me time to forget the pain,...   I know we can only talk w/kg, so all I'll say is I was at 3.7 w/k.  And I weigh 196 lbs.  It was a good test

Started out about 20 watts below the final average, dropped about 5 watts after a couple minutes, then slowly climbed,... watt by watt...  back up.  Credit to hard work and working with Shane, this is 31 watts higher than last Jan when I started working with him, and 8 watts over my high last summer.

Awesome Chris, well done!  This post certainly put me in a good frame of mind for my test this morning.

Test result for me was 295w - 3.84 W/Kg.  That's +12w from my last test and also a +12w increase in FTP.  3.65 W/Kg there.

Awesome job, Chris and Arend!

I also tortured myself with a 20 min test this morning.  I decided to go for the 200W average over 20 min and just barely held on.  First 5 min around 195, next 10 right around 200, next 3 about 205, and the last 2 about 210.  I was completely spent by the end and so glad to be done (but as a very positive for this test, there was never a moment where I truly considered bailing....wanted the pain to be over, but wasn't even considering quitting).

20 min test puts me at 3.83 W/kg and FTP (based on that and my 5' test) has me at 3.70 W/kg   Pretty excited about that (though my 5' test is probably a little lower than it should be because I haven't quite figured out pacing on that one yet, so FTP may be slightly inflated).

I'll pile on here with the congrats, as those are GREAT results!

The improvements must be gratifying for all 3 of you (and I don't want to race up a hill against ANY of you).

I have a "rest and test" week next week, so I'll be doing some testing in all 3 sports.  I'm on a mostly run focus at the moment, but need to set baselines for all 3.  My problem will be that I might have to go to SF for a few days unexpectedly…

Well, that and also the pain of testing!    I've said this before, but I can almost never get close to my race numbers in a test - no matter how hard I *think* I'm pushing myself.  Strava has helped… but not enough.  Could just be that the peak/taper for a race changes the result that much, I suppose (?).

Anyone have tactics to push harder on a test (mentally)?

Matt

Post your goal watts here before the test and during the test you'll be thinking about how much we will mock you if you fail.

I hear you and am potentially in the same boat.  Could be a new job in my near future, which always derails other stuff (at least for the first 90 days, IME).  With the kids being 9, 11, and 13 they are at a place that requires perhaps the most time (lot's of interests and friends - but all at different places and/or times… even when they're at the same place, they're there at different times!).

If I stop working out, though, it's bad for EVERYONE.

What I think will snap will be the ability to really compete in races, but at least I'll should still be able to squeeze in enough to participate up to the HIM level, certainly local sprints and Oly's.  I'm hoping to really be able to put in the hours for a big season (that's the plan), but if I can't at least I'll find out if it's fun to participate/complete and not "compete."  So, my relief valve will be accepting slower performances… or so I say now.

How do you plan to deal with it if the hours get more crazy?

Matt

Really nice testing everyone. You guys have made some major improvements on the bike.
Chris, that is great to hear you keep improving at a high rate even after you've already been training consistently for a good chunk of time now.
I'm about to follow the plan Shane is laying out on the bike int he power forum so could only hope to see a boost anywhere near that. It would really be crazy to be out on the road after seeing something like in the winter. I usually have a horrible time in the winter and work to get everything back nevermind any gains in May so hopefully that changes this year.

I actually think that's a good idea (and probably part of the reason I managed to eek out my goal this morning).  I'm also part of a TrainerRoad team, so I know that I'll be thinking twice before bailing mid-way through a workout....people will see my workouts and hold me accountable!

I guess my issue with the 5' efforts and ftp (and I see now that they're on the chart) is like Matt, doesn't seem all that relevant to triathlon as those explosive breakaways don't happen.  Usually.

As a triathlete, you can probably ignore 5 second power, but 1' and 5' power are a measure of your VO2 max, which can be a limiter to your FTP improvement.

In any case...great tests by both you and Arend.  I plan to do a 5' test later today.

Swimming is going well for me!

Have really improved my cruise pace and fast pace.

Was going to ride the trainer this evening, but unfortunately work is getting the best of me, almost to the point where I am not sure I really can do long course triathlon. Trying not to stress too much, but my job is getting busier and more stressful to the point of concern....

Wait and see, I guess.

**************

Congrats on the swimming!   Swimming with youngsters helps!    My swimming took a big hit over the holidays, I was working hard in a set of 100s last night and putting in mediocre times for me for the effort expended.  I know it will come back, but still.....

Sorry about the wotk stuff, hopefully it calms down some.  long distance tri and work/family committements is tough, and I don't even have kids

Thanks Chris!

Nice job on the test!

BTW 5' efforts are something I worked on this summer (and 30s-2' as well) as I road with crazy roadies and simply had to hang on for dear life lol.

Nice test Chris.

I like to think that I can handle work and longer distance tri but this year I just haven't been able to very well up until this point. Maybe my residency growing pains have resolved? My 5 weeks on gen surg and 3 on ortho might have something else to say though. :/ I want to sign up for Calgary 70.3...ongoing debate.

I bought myself a new GPS watch using Christmas gift cards - one of the new Forerunner 220s.  Used it for the first time today and I like it, especially the fact that it only took less than 30 seconds from the time I powered it on until it was locked onto the satellites.  On a day like today with -20 windchill, that was awesome!  So much better than standing around for 5 minutes while my old one locked on.

It also measures run cadence - 181 spm is what it told me.  Guess I don't need to worry about changing anything there.

I dunno, I think what Arend and Nicole were saying is that they kicked my a$$ w/kg-wise...     my results still only put me in the fair to moderate category.  raw testing numbers are such teases.

Yeah...you don't need to look at 1' or 5' power in terms of W/kg...just the raw number and how it correlates to your 20' or 60' power.  It will let you know what you need to work on in order to raise FTP.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
