Haha I dunno, it's like 40 or 50 miles. I'm just using it as marathon recovery, not training for it or anything. It's the Seattle Bike-n-Brews. Beer at the midway and the end. No basket Erin, but only because I don't own a beach cruiser. I'm riding with some gluten-intolerant people which means I get all the beer. See how crafty I am???? |

Good call, you may not want to do bike races, bike events however are fair game and AWESOME! And I see what you did there! |

Be careful, you might just beerly finish. At yeast you'll have fun. You could totally put a basket on a road bike. Or panniers might work, as long as you keep your drinking symmetrical.

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by mcmanusclan5 Originally posted by ponderingfox Yeah, the salt water was a bit of a shock to me, and I ingested more than my fair share of the water, but that being said - I still made it through mostly unscathed. I don't think the water was warm enough to have it non-wetsuit legal, so you might want to get a bit more practice in with that before the race too... for us the water temp was WAY warmer than the air temp - so if nothing else it was really nice to have the wetsuit on while waiting for the swim to start! Lol - definitely try to break the mashing habit - your legs will thank you on the run. Wooot! Definitely come out and volunteer - not only would it be really cool to meet another Manatee, but volunteering at the races is so much fun. I'll be volunteering (again) at IMMoo this year. What did you feel was the difference for swimming in salt water vs. fresh water? Is it the taste of the water and how ingesting it makes you feel afterward? Funny how different the same experience can be. I love the salt (buoyancy, baby!), but I also grew up in the ocean and am comfortable with surf, big toothy feesh and such. That said, drinking much of it will leave you feeling a bit off. Just a taste is probably good - electrolytes! Good news from the ortho here. No tears in the knee and no evulsion of the hamstring. Just patello-femoral syndrome and a strain/micro-tear (knee/hammy, respectively). So, I'm going to ramp back up slowly for the run and really focus on the bike/swim for a month (as my bike needs it!). Did have a good ride Sunday and a fun one today in some rain and HOWLING wind! Matt Yep... this happened. There is ONE turn for the swim and after turning left you're supposed to veer to the right to the swim exit. Well, I made the left turn, saw that reeds were growing off to the left and promptly headed to where I could stand up and... Um... "get rid" of a lot of what I had ingested. Still did a 1:08:xx swim though. Matt - SUCH GREAT NEWS about your knee!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, sorry for being such an MG slacker! I've been a bit overwhelmed with work changes and other crap but I'm sort of back in the groove again now. We just had a nice weekend in a cute little surfie town near Byron Bay called Lennox Head and life feels much calmer. My 10 year old bought a new surfboard on the way home and I took him down to the beach to try it out yesterday, made me want to get back into surfing more. I'm putting tri training on hold for a few months and getting STRONG!!! It's amazing how weak I got after doing my Ironman last year, I could run for 4 hours, swim for 2 hours and ride for 6 hours but had trouble walking up a steep flight of stairs!!! My squat is up to 70kg (154lb), Deadlift 90kg (200lb) and Benchpress 62.5kg (138lb) which is weak for lots of people but great for me and I'm feeling the benefits already. I hiked up a big headland at the weekend and didn't even notice the slope, hopefully cycling will also benefit. We'll see... |

![]() | ![]() Mary - happy belated birthday! Kirsten - you made it this far into the semester, you will persevere untl the end. Think how great it will feel to get a break from that, at least! Salty - LOVE your bike event, it sounds like it will be a barrel of fun (thin attempt to keep beer puns flowing - and again!) David - good to see ya! Thanks for dropping in with an update and for reminding me of my undone 'bucket list' item of wanting to learn how to surf. Great idea with the strength training, keep up the good work! Today at Masters Elliot told us on Friday the pool will be set up LCM, and it sounds like every Monday and Friday it will always be set up that way. I'm guessing Wed. will switch back to 25M? Should be interesting, I both excited and a little nervous! |

Balance is not my strong suit. Thusly, surfing and I did not get along well. I wound up getting into triathlon after that. |

SInce I live about 2.5 hours from the coast I am limited to a few inland options which are badazz in their own way. 1. I can paddle my SUP out to the middle of the bay and surf the ferry waves. They are small but it's pretty awesome 2. We load up my brother's wakeboard boat and fill up the ballast tank on one side and it throws a REALLY big wake. You start behind the boat with a really short rope as if you are wakeboarding then drop into the wave. Eventually the speed of the wave keeps you going fast enough you can throw the handle into the boat and surf freely. here is a pic of my bro doing it. Notice beer in hand |

Salty drinking beer while riding in "bike event." Salty's brother with beer in hand while "surfing". Methinks this family enjoys a good malty beverage now and then. |
