Great job!
I just did my first one of the year as well Nothing spectacular, 25 min run, but hey - good start

Running a lot of hills as a teenager got me to run a 20 minute 5K Seriously hit hills consistently and you will be like the flash!

Thanks for your advice! Unfortunately, not too many hills in Chicago area :/ But will keep my eyes open
Also, 20 min 5k sounds so awesome...!

Come to the north shore of long island and you'll find plenty! I would love to get back to where I was by my 28th birthday. I almost broke 20 during a triathlon once as well lol.

I am currently finishing the last mint that was in a bag that my mom bought me at least 7.5 years ago (she passed away in July 2010), I found it as I was cleaning out a desk drawer at work.  It formerly was a 'puffy' mint but completely lacks those qualities now.  I don't care, I'm eating it anyway and thankfully so far didn't break a tooth!  Yup, I'm a bit of a sentimental sap.

Hockey practice tonight and maybe a little snow.

OMG! As was mentioned earlier, they are predicting snow for the Raleigh area -- "as much as 6 inches." I stopped by the store today to pick up a few things (not storm related) and the place was cleared out!  The lines were a zillion people long.  It's not even supposed to start snowing for more that 24-hours!

Have seen the idea put up that hills are speed work in disguise. In some ways at least. If you don't have any hilly races you'll still be ok.

There are some smaller hills out of the city, but it's still small rolling at best. Longest I have nearby (by a considerable margin) is half a mile. It's about 3% grade. Can get much steeper, into double digits even, but they're also much shorter as the hills aren't any taller. I've tended to use a treadmill for any more substantial hills work. It's the uphill that has more benefits anyway.

Feeling that a bit too! More consistency will help me. Weird as it sounds, actually broke 40' in an Oly run before 20' in a sprint. I don't do that many Oly's either.

Ref: Trainer Road Group.

Apologies, currently accessing on phone so am finding it a bit difficult.

When I clicked on the link it took me to my Trainer Road log in page. Once logged in, it then took me to the Manatee team page.

I then closed that page down and tried the link again, where it took me to my user account home page. I then had to click teams tab to access the group. Not really helpful if you're not part of the group.

Here is a direct link to the page:

https://www.trainerroad.com/teams/2477-manatees-of-mayhem

but that may act the same way as the previous link.

It's a bit difficult to work out what's going on when I'm part of the group :/

You could try searching for "manatees" or "manatees of mayhem".

I will join the group again, am busy at the moment pushing through the post Christmas break rush and getting stock back out to the shops. Will calm down in a bit. Will post Bio next week when I am off. Have a bit of time available when Hannah is in hospital for her operation.

Speak soon.

Running or cycling uphill is a fantastic way to strengthen your legs while also decreasing the stress your putting on your body compared to a flat surface. Meanwhile running downhill puts more stress on your body due to the great impact on your legs and having that impact while running faster will tear the muscles down so when you recover your body will be more adapt to running faster.

My strategy with my workouts is to essentially train myself to run faster since I am way to slow and uncomfortable with running, kinda gotta break my body down and rebuild her stronger! Oh god I'm actually learning something in college o.0

We go to Cleveland later this month for follow up with the surgeon and to schedule the second surgery. She will be a lot stronger for the second surgery, so recovery will not be as bad. Plus later in the Summer we will have to move our oldest somewhere for law school.

Jim, it's great to hear that Michelle is doing better.

That's what they say.  They do not have a good history of being able to predict snow accumulation with any kind of accuracy.  Right now they are saying 3-6 inches and "maybe more" starting on Friday night and ending sometime on Saturday.  That should make Saturday's run somewhat interesting.

We do have a winter storm watch in effect for that time.

I saw your picture on Twitter. It made us laugh. When we lived in Atlanta we had 3 inches of snow and the Kroger sold out of eggs, milk and bread. We jokes that Georgian's must east french toast when it snows. Be careful Southerners don't know how to drive in that stuff.

Richmond is predicted to have anywhere from 3-9 inches at the last check...Subject to change.  My little area rarely gets the seriousness of thunderstorms, but we do get snow....Could be an interesting weekend.

Today I ran in short and a short sleeved shirt.  This weekend I will need to wear All The Things.

Tell me about it. This morning was the first time I've worn a shirt on a run since last Friday. I'm not sure I have enough clothes for what they're predicting here Sunday morning.
It's not going to be that cold!
28!!!!!!!! #texascold

The harder you run, the more heat you'll produce!

Sunday is LSD day

This almost got away.

More seriously though, that is cold enough to where you do want to pay attention to things. 40's can be funny as usually so long as you're moving you'll be ok, but that can change quite a bit just a little lower. You going to be ok with it? 30' of 28F just around my neighborhood isn't anything to worry about, but think your long runs are at least several hours now. Quite a bit different.

Wow--I will stop griping about Oregonians and snow. Portland and Eugene tend to come to a standstill when there is more than a dusting--schools called off, etc. and nobody seems to know how to drive in it, except people from the eastern part of the state, which has more severe winters. But I haven't seen the panic buying. The saving grace is that there's a big outdoor ethic, so pretty much everyone who's physically capable of it has proper equipment for walking/snowshoeing/ skiing, and it becomes something of a community "leave your car at home" day. We got 4-6 inches on Wednesday (varied with elevation). I had to do some last-minute banking and shopping (walked there) and must have seen hundreds of people out on foot, snowshoe, sleds, and skis, as well as several cars abandoned on the steep hills leading to our house by drivers who were overly optimistic about road conditions or their ability to handle them.

Did manage to get to the airport Thursday AM and now back in Tokyo waiting for the last leg of my "World's Longest Commute" back to Saigon.

Most of us use the training log on the site (It's required: "Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory.").  This makes it a lot easier for us to help each other when training questions come up.   Here's a few shorts article on training logs:  http://running.competitor.com/2013/12/training/why-you-should-keep-... http://www.active.com/triathlon/articles/10-reasons-to-keep-a-train... If you're not going to log or blog or whatever here on BT, please put a link to your training log in your BT Dashboard.

If you list your upcoming races and events on your training log  -- by adding to My Races or listing them in Dashboard.

We have a Bike Gallery as well.  Post a picture of your racing steed and draw Chris' attention to it.  He'll get you added.

We have a Strava group.  Let Chris or Janyne know and we can add you.

We also have a TrainerRoad group that Darren manages for us.  (Darren has said that he will be joining us but I have not seen him around this thread yet.)

Oh, we're on Twitter too.  Janyne manages a Twitter list -- Order of the Racing Manatee

Please be active!  Inactive Manatees make us sad!

Thanks for posting these links, I had no idea there was a bike gallery, twitter site, etc.

That is exactly the reason we are NOT going to Raleigh today. We were headed for the governor's inauguration festivities. I will take Christmas down and ride the trainer instead. The combination of Southerners not knowing how to drive in snow, Yankees who think they know everything about driving in snow, road clearing that just doesn't happen (why spend money when it doesn't happen that often) and the black ice that always happens before snow all added together, make driving in snow in the south just plain stoopid. I had to drive in it all across the state for years when it was awful. Where I live now, I don't even go out to run or walk when it ices/snows. Cars sliding into you on the road is a real possibility (we have no sidewalks).

Hope you find some nanners!

INFO FOR NEW AND RETURNING MANATEES

If you haven't figured it out, we talk a lot. :-)  Fasten your seatbelts!  Also, we tend to be an inspiring bunch (as in, we use the "inspire" feature of the site a lot).  If you are not familiar with inspires, note that you can reply to them by clicking Reply.  This pops out a new window for you to type your response so that the original poster can see it. Please try acknowledge inspires, at least occasionally!  They can really help us to get to know each other.

How does one become a member of the twitter group?  I'm titrating my twitter dosage down at the moment, but am still on...  work pretty much requires me to be to an extent.

Thx

M

Oh my goodness! WALKING to do errands!

Kevin laughs at the people who go to the coffee shop that he frequents and wait in a long drive through line.  He parks, walks in, gets his coffee, and is on his way before they even ordered.  We are becoming a society like in Wall E
