Veteran 671 Harrison, Oh | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread mdfahy - 2012-06-25 4:43 PM klassman - 2012-06-25 12:58 PM I ran into something yesterday that I've not yet experienced. Your collective wisdom is welcome. For now, I'm doing my best with RICE. Friday, I did a 90 minute run after work. It was about 90 degrees and I stretched afterward. At the halfway point, I ate a gel and took in water. Afterward, I drank a lot of fluids. Saturday I did a nice brick. 5.5 hour bike followed by 1 hour run. I didn't break speed records but was steady throughout. I stuck to my nutrition plan and had about seven 20 ounce bottles on the ride/the start of the run. It was about 92 degrees when I started and 88 when I finished. I felt fine -- tired but fine. Sunday morning I went out for my long run. It was in the high 80s and the temperature was climbing. I took three gels and planned my route so that about every 45 minutes I would come to a water fountain. About a half an hour in to the run, my left shin started to get achy. At 50 minutes, it was full on pain. I was considering if I had a stress fracture and thinking about what kind of muscles are in the front part of my lower leg. I stopped and stretched. I sat down in the grass and stretched everything on both legs, got up and felt worse. It was a dull powerful pain that starts about an inch above my anklebone and runs up alongside the outside of my shinbone about 6-8 inches. (Just off center from the front of the leg.) I walked a few minute, tried to run again and ended up walking toward home for more than an hour in pain with each step. Ice, Advil and stretching and I'm still in pain today. It hurts to pull toes up toward my knee and to point them...in between is okay. Coda: I was rescued by a woman who called her boyfriend to pick me up -- triathletes the both of them. He is doing IMLP and she lives in my neighborhood. We share a LBS. He drove me to the pool where my kids and wife were waiting for me to arrive post-run. Sorry for the long post. I obviously didn't finish my run, bailed on my ride last night and today is my day off -- I'm trying to keep my head together and not freak out about months of training, absurd financial costs etc. being put off because of this situation. Question -- Can a cramp be so severe to actually pull a muscle? Would dehydration affect just one part of the body in such a localized way? What types of muscles are in the front of your leg near the shin? What does a fracture feel like? First, get to a doc immediately, this is what I learned a couple times this year with my knee injuries, don't delay. I've had shin splits earlier this year, which sound somewhat like this, it took a couple weeks of no running to heal, but I was able to bike and swim, yours sounds as bad or a little worse. RICE is good, ice it several times a day. I would get PT advice on stretching it and when and how much, you don't want to make it any worse and there is plenty of time to get flexibility back. Lastly and most importantly, the hay is in the barn. You should not worry about training at all at this point. I got injured about this time in my last IM training cycle last year leading up to CDA and I had a great race and barely did any workouts for 4 weeks prior to my race (I checked my logs and did 14 total hours of light training over last 4 weeks before IMCDA). And I beat my race time goal by 1.5 hours and did it comfortably and even easily I would say. So your fitness is already in the bank, you need to focus on getting to the starting line healthy. (easy for me to say, right, i can't seem to figure that out!). Good luck. Glad you posted this. I am having a much harder time recovering from going down on my bike than I EVER imagined. Still SO tired today and very sore. I worked this am, came home about 2 thirty, layed down on the couch for 'just a bit' and just now got up. Almost forced myself out the door (especially since this is the last "work" week); however, I'm afraid I will regret it. I guess I'm taking another rest day today. It helps to know that someone else had a similar experience and made it through ok. |

Yes, that is true - at IMLP last year I even saw a couple of folks sent back to get theirs as they were coming out of T-1. They do give you two numbers though, just in case you want to pin them on to whatever you are wearing (instead of using a race belt) and want to make a costume change between the bike and the run. I use a race belt, and on the bike I just spin it around on my back. I actually keep it on my back on the run as well, FWIW. This has an added benefit as it has your name printed on it in a large enough font that it is easy to read. This allows folks that get caught by you (as well as the ones that MIGHT catch you) to know who you are and give you a little encouragement by name. I got recognized by a couple of BT folks this way last year on both the bike and the run, and the encouragement they offered was invaluable - it really is awesome to be able to recognize folks from this group on the course and share encouragement. That said, my next post: |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I just received in the mail a whole bunch of BT temporary tattoos. If you want one for race day, drop me a PM with your mailing address and I will stick one in the mail for you. Or alternatively, you can get one from me on the Friday morning before the race at the swim meet-up (we are gonna have the traditional swim meet-up, right????). If you want one, I recommend we wear them on our left calf to make it easy to spot each other on the course. I cannot even BEGIN to describe how awesome it is to get a little encouragement from each other out there - see my previous post. SO, even if you are just lurking on the thread and want one - shoot me a PM - I'll get them to you right away. |

x2 on the race belt. It's the only way to fly. It will be the best 9 bucks you ever spent. Put it another way - you are on the verge of becoming an (lower voice) Ironman - don't pin your numbers on any more. |

Dale, don't believe the Athlete Guide. You don't even need to wear a helmet on the bike. Anything goes. I'm gonna be barefoot with a speedo, no shirt, no helmet, but you can recognize me by the BT Tat on the calf Screw WTC. Don't Conform!!! FIGHT THE POWER!! We paid enough to race how we damn-well wanna race. I may just go compleltey commando for the swim too, just goggles, nuthin' else. |

Talk more on this...what meet up are you referring to? BT Tradition is we all meet at the misty shores of Mirror Lake at precisely 2 minutes before sunrise and perform the Annual BT Lake Placid Sacrifice. We usually draw straws ahead of time to see who brings the chicken. I am so NOT bringing again. |

Cornick, from the look of the last few posts, it seems as if Bobby wants to transport the Underwear Run from the Big Island all the way to Lake Placid. He is just kidding about being on the fence. We all know he'll wear the green slingshot for the swim and the pink briefs for the bike. If there is any doubt, check out the tool holster on the briefs. You need to borrow a multi tool or a CO2 cartridge, don't worry, I got that right here in my casual hip-holster belt. Bobby's not an awesome dude for nothing, you know. Oh, and Rusty, I'll see you Friday morning for the swim sacrifice to pick up my temporary calf ink. |

Dale, The short answer is, yes, you have to wear a bib number on your bike ride and on your run. The long answer is the following: USAT and WTC (the Ironman parent company) have different rules regarding a few things (wetsuit temp cutoff being a big one), and bib numbers are one of them. For all Ironman branded races, including Ironman 70.3s, you're required to a bib number facing backward on the bike. That's not the case for non-Ironman branded races that only fall under USAT rules like all the Rev3 races. Two sets of rules make things pretty confusing imo. |
