Still practicing your swim with ice baths? Darn it, my lake is getting warmer!! It's definitely above 60. Supposedly Lake CDA is around 54 (down from 56)... That is take-your-breathe-away cold. How do you handle it? Everytime I jump in a cold body of water I need to acclimate or I start hyperventilating like I did in Knoxville. Share the tips Ms. Fish!
Pee in your wetsuit!
I swam with Kyla when the water temp was below 58.... She is lying. She dove right in and took off. 3 of us (boys!) were sitting on shore going is she serious!! We'd better go! SHE IS INSANE! Ha!! I didn't know that skipping the swim that day was an option!! I will admit to being of the mind of "the sooner you start, the sooner you can stop." Rip off that band-aid lightening fast and get 'er done. |

How do you handle it? Everytime I jump in a cold body of water I need to acclimate or I start hyperventilating like I did in Knoxville. Share the tips Ms. Fish! Anything 58+ is not unbearable to me. Splash the face, stand for about 30 seconds to get the feet adjusted a bit, throw on the goggles and SWIM!!!! I do have a feeling it will be a chilly swim this year -- although anything can happen and the lake has been known to climb in temp 2 degrees in the last day. When it is take-your-breath-away cold, it is unpleasant for several minutes then I don't notice it. I do, however, notice the lack of feeling in my feet when I get out. That is one plus about not running after the swim, I guess!! Really, I have no secrets. Supposedly your body (or maybe it's your brain) does acclimate a bit if you keep exposing yourself to the cold temps. So, if you expect cold water in your race, find cold water and swim in it repeatedly. And have a hot cup of coffee waiting for you when you're done!!! Have a read about this guy from the UK who specialises in cold water swims, he did a 1km ocean swim in the Arctic with no wetsuit!!! http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/world/man-swims-in-north-pole/story-e6frev00-1111113968496 |

Master 1372 Tosa, WI | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Is eating a bunch of gnats several times while running considered protein or carbohydrate intake when being calculated into your long-course nutrition plans? Man the cool and wet spring has done wonders for that population around here this spring!!!! I really like it when you get a whole flock stuck in the sweat on your face or fly directly into your eye! Then you squash them all over when you wipe away the sweat. |

Cool looking at the graph as I swam it. I couldn't imagine wearing it in my cap though during a race. I'd be petrified though wearing it during a race that I would get kicked and cap pops off and down goes the 310. I still find the wrist is horrible for distance. |

Extreme Veteran 347 , Utah | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed I have been looking online for another bike. Hoping I can find a good used road or cross bike. Since we just moved into my my house, my nephew is going to a new boy scout troop. They are doing a cycling merit badge where they go on rides and increase the distance unitl thye get to a final 50 mile ride. Last Tuesday They did a 15 mile ride. My nephew has a old heavy mountain bike he bought from a trift store for ten bucks. I was a little worried that he'd never doen 15 mile before and his bike might wear him out. So I asked him if he wanted to use my road bike for the ride. He's the same height as me. Well he was the other scout riding a carbon road bike. When he got home he told his mom how cool it was and it was so easy to ride and can he ride it to the library. He had a blast which it cool since he was meeting these guys for the first time. So now I can go bike shopping again. Since he my size if I can find a bike I like and fits me we can share. I'd like to find a cyclocross bike. It would be a good bike I ride in the winter, or as a commuter, and share with my nephew. And when he gets bigger it will still fit me. ~Tiana |

Today's plan is baseball practice with Tommy in an hour then we are headed up to Seneca Lake for a cardboard boat race. We built a giant cardboard boat with a group of people and we are going to race it in the lake. Hopefully it isn't a race to the bottom!! Good luck racers! Hope your stomach is ok Doug. |

What I said is I wore my 310 on my wrist for the measurement. It seemed to work fine based on looking at the little graph in Garmin Connect and TP. I told the person who set up the aquathon swim buoys I thought it was short and she said no way. I don't believe it Did my final OWS at the Oly Venue and it went fine. Course there were no people in it except me. Race strategy set so now I need to spend a little time embracing it. One question....how do you change your fueling???? I'm still thinking a similar number of CHOs per hour on the bike, but no protein. Make sense? Good luck racers.....Trev you'll be fine....I hope the same can be said for Doug's stomach! |

Elite 3395 Raleigh | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Hey MG I made it home. Waiting for the official results to be posted. No podium for me, but I had the best bike leg I have ever had: Garmin says 21.73 mph. Passed 19-20 people on the bike. The last one was a guy with an Mdot tat on his calf. Of course he passed me on the run. It got hot out there and my weakness caught up with me there. But I am happy with how it went and cant wait to race this tri next year. Full RR when the data is posted. |

Master 2501 | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Did an OWS this morning with my "old" 305 in my swim cap. First time I have tried this!! I got it in fine and started fine, but kept hearing it beep while I was swimming. I figured it was losing satellite reception/tracking. Seeing as it only registered about :30 (when I swam for :40) I'm sure that was the case. It did say 1.18 miles for that :30, so that made me happy as I was just noodling along and not swimming overly hard. How do you control it losing reception? Was it the thickness of my swim cap (I have thinner ones but was wearing a heavier one)? It was a cloudy day (raining) so that may have affected it as well. FOR SUZY: I was thinking about your air-swallowing problem when I swam. My lake was a bit choppy today and I found that I was in a position to swallow more air. I realized I was doing weird things with my mouth to prevent this. When I was breathing in/out, I noticed I would put the back of my tongue on the roof of my mouth and sort-of force air out of my nose before I swallowed it -- almost like that thing you do when you have an itch way in the back of your throat? It's hard to explain, not sure if I am making sense, but there were definte adaptations to my way of breathing to prevent myself from swallowing (too much) air. Happy racing!!! |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Fun morning in the ER. Sam was out riding early this AM and her front tire got caught in a pavement groove and she went down. Luckilly there were people that stopped to assist and call 911. She ended up with 7 stitches above her eye and a bit of road rash on her leg. The lady that called 911 was nice enough to call me and let me know what was going on and held on to Sam's bike until I got there. Bikes a bit scratched up but doesn't appear to be anything major. They did scans and such no head injuries or anything like that. She's home now but a bit sore. |
