Spring has sprung!!!  The grass is green, the trees are blooming and allergies are in full force so that must mean a few of us have races to think about this weekend!  Scoop please!

I FINALLY have a race this weekend! Half marathon on Sunday. I'm feeling pretty good about it except for how I will handle the weather! It's mid-50s here all week and then on Sunday it's going to shoot up to 79. We had similar highs about 2 weeks ago and I struggled through the long run, so I'm gonna look through my logs and figure out how I can cope with the heat.

What time does your race start?  If it's a reasonable start time, you should be done way before the heat spikes, right?

Hopefully this weekly answer does not become Habit Forming ....  No racing for me this weekend, I think I will just go ride my bike (maybe I can break 650 miles this month?).  Good luck to all the Racers this weekend .......REPRESENT!!!

I also think it ROCKS that every racer in the MG has a solid and well thought out race plan for the weekend well before the race, it makes SWBKRUN look like we know what we are doing!!   Foot in mouth

Thanks for your help developing that plan, Dino!

No racing here. Going to SF with the family 4/1 for Spring Break.

Kim where can I swim?

I'm not Kim, but I swam at the Embarcadero YMCA when I was in SF a couple of years ago. Very nice pool. (Edit to fix typo)

Good luck racers!  Looks like everyone is really to rock it.

My kids have Odyssey of the Mind this Sat.  My K team is a cute bunch of crazy little kiddos but they have had fun so it was worth the constant corralling.  Then it will be time to pack for our trip to MN not exactly the fun in the sun spring break trip but it will be nice to see family.  I hope I don't run into a bear, literally!!!!

And I see Galveston is this weekend.  Should be fun to watch the fireworks and see what Lance learned.

I have a difficult time with heat too. The strategies that have helped me the most is wearing light colored clothing, pouring water over my head at every aid station if I'm getting overheated, (when it's really hot and ice is available ) ice in the sports bra works miracles, also make sure to stay well hydrated and try to focus on your running form, or a mantra or visualization, rather than on how hot it is. Hopefully, like Linda said, the race start will be early enough that you won't have to worry about the heat. Have a great race!

No racing here this weekend although I do have a 19 miler that I am a little nervous about.  It has been a long time since I have run that far.

Thanks Julia I'll check out that pool.

FYI: I had a teleconference with my boss in Germany. Although he did not have timetable, it looks like my choices are move to Munich or find anothe job. At least he wants me, I am the only one he is asking. Must say though that I am bummed.

Thx for the advice. It starts at 8:15, so as long as I don't wander off course, I should be OK through most of it.  I reviewed my logs and when I ran in the heat 2 weeks ago I started at 10:45a (oops) and also only took in water three times at miles 6, 9 and 11 (dbl oops). So I will do a much better job this Sunday trying to stay hydrated and take in sips even when I don't think I need it.

Good luck, Melissa! Try to keep hydrated over the next few days, too! Doug, where are you staying and will you have a car? The downtown YMCA is nice and convenient, especially if you are staying downtown, but parking is rough so there may be better options. PM me if you like. I love my pool at USF Koret Center, but it's a bit closer to GG Park and easy parking...and nice to run in the park afterwards if you are doing any running.

Lots of racers!! Lots of half-marathons! Rock it, peeps!!!

Melissa, to echo what Kim said, I would work especially hard on "pre-hydrating" over the next few days. Try to keep the pee nearly clear at all times. Carry a water bottle around. Pop some Nuun or something in it if you're bored of water, and to keep electrolytes and such in check. Don't avoid salt. And ENJOY the race!! Fun in the sun!! I like to wear a hat or visor when it's sunny (really, I wear one all the time) -- I'm kind-of a vampire since I don't see the sun very often!

THANK YOU for all of the well-wishes!! Fever was only 99.9 this morning, so we are celebrating!!!! Poor girl still feels awful, but I like the trend toward wellness.

Happy Day to all!!

Melissa - to add to the good advice you've already gotten, I find that it really helps to carry my own water bottle when it's hot. That way I can take small sips every few minutes instead of trying to drink a whole cup or 2 of water at the aid stations, which my stomach doesn't like. It's pretty easy to get the volunteers to refill your bottle if you run out of water. Good luck on your race!

OUCH!  That's kinda harsh.

FWIW, I've had a lot of military co-workers that moved to Germany unwillingly but after getting there absolutely loved it.  Then when their tours were over, they put in for extensions to stay longer.  Home is where/what you make it.

My wife and I have always wanted and tried to get an overseas assignment but it just never worked out.  I'll admit, I'm a tad jealous of your opportunity.  Tough decision though, a lot to consider, family wise.

Good Luck!

Good luck racers!!  Hope it is a fast weekend.

Thanks to all the Ironmen (do you prefer "Ironwomen"?) for the advice.  As I get closer to those training days I will make the decision wether it would be worth it.  I felt 18 was enough last time.  I agree on the totally different animal than the stand alone marathon.

Doug - Damn, kind of narrows the options.  Good luck.

Good luck Suzy and John.  Can't wait to hear about your races.

I'm going to be running my first 1/2 "mary" (that was for you "soul brother").  I'm not sure if I'm excited or terrified--I guess a little of both.  The course is really hilly--I'll be either going up or down, nothing flat.  I would like to try to hold about a 10:30 pace for the first 8 miles or so, and then pick it up a bit if I'm still able.  What I really want to work on isn't so much a time or pace goal, but my mental race.  I always get so distracted by all of the people and things going on, that I have trouble finding my "zen-like" running state of mind. You know, that place you go where you don't think about how hard your breathing, or how many places on your body hurt.  So my real goal is to get into my zone, and lose myself in the run.

Oh, and this chick hasn't had any desserts, candy, sugar, etc. since Fat Tuesday.  So I'm going to have a piece of cheesecake after the race.  And yes, I'll be enjoying at least one pint of free Bloomington Brewing Company's Big Stone Stout. mmmmm

I think you have a great strategy here!!!

Good luck.  You will rock it!

Getting things packed and ready to go.  Making my list, checking it twice Smile  It looks like the weather is going to be ideal for my race (50 at the start, around 60 by the time I finish and partly sunny).  I couldn't have requested better weather.

Tomorrow is my last day of teaching before Spring Break, so just one more day of "herding teenagers" and then a 4 hour drive south to Bloomington.  We're staying with my husband's brother and his wife.  I'll also get to hang out with my daughter who is finishing up her junior year at I.U., so I'm excited on MANY fronts.  At 3:30pm tomorrow, I'll take a deep breath and start to unwind.  Actually, I'll probably be alternately grading papers and napping during the drive.

Doug: I know you didn't ask, but here's my 2 cents.  I would look at this opportunity as an adventure.  You can always try it and decide you don't like it, but if you don't you might always wonder if you should have.  Anybody want to line a job up for me to teach somewhere else, like maybe Australia (David)???

I would move to Australia in a heartbeat.  It is hands down my favorite place in the world.

Hey gang. Long time no talk. It has been crazy around here for quite awhile. Crazy in a good sense though. Hope you are doing well and are well into your training for this year. We've been having some freaky weather up here if no one else mentioned it. Last Thursday it was 30C (86F) and today we were having some snow about (26F). Its kind of hard to keep away from colds etc with those kinds of changes.

I do have a question to put out to the group. I am coaching a guy in town who wants to do 12 super sprints this year. That's basically one every weekend. Any ideas on training and nutrition for this kind of action. Oh he does want to be on the podium too. I"m trying to figure out how to get him through the season without doing a burn and crash part way through.
