SSMinnow - 2010-01-25 11:09 AM Trina-I think my dad used to do the same thing to my mom if she started losing weight...is it possible that you could do some relays together?  Maybe you swim and run let him bike just so he has some fun as you continue to progress.  You could also do bike events together.  I got Paul to do a few of those....he would never swim and hates to run more than a couple of miles.

Doug--why did Tracy say poor Doug? You aren't injured, right?  I thought your long run went really well.....say it did!

Rob--Tracy told me to have sex on the beach so perhaps she wins the naughty crown of the day .  Of course, I had to tell her that was sooooo yesterday .

Think of the most mind numbing thing you did this morning....for me it was 95 minutes on an elliptical machine trying to get my HR into Z2 while sweating way more than William's 4lbs.  Blech......cannot wait to be able to run.

Off to the pool.

YOU DID WHAT YESTERDAY?????  Fair warning - They don't allow that kinda stuff down in Galveston....

Evil husband made brownies last night!

I was sitting at my computer when I heard sinister laughter coming from the kitchen. Minutes later the smell of brownies was wafting throughout the house. I had a tiny corner piece. Husband is now banned from bringing any sugar into the house, or risks being sent upstairs to sleep.

Seriously though....I think he's feeling a bit insecure. He keeps telling me my body is looking good (he's nearly blind), and he doesn't want to be alone in his moderate obesity. I feel sorry for him Anyone have advice on how they've handled a similar situation with their spouse? Training for a Tri is out for him as his knees are blown from basketball when he was younger.

For me when I started to loose some weight( from training and food control) my wife got on board with the 'eating better as a family.' So she started to do that as well, but stayed away from the physical activity side of it.
Eventually, she got on board. Nothing I could say or do would get her on board until she was ready......
I do think once she started to see how chiseled her husband's body was becoming, she had no choice...

It is a hard situation no doubt.

Agree 100% on both accounts. When I began training for tri's, I tried everything to get Gary to run with me. Even though he had been a runner when he was younger, he had no interest in taking it up again. I tried for months and finally had given up. Then, when he watched my first tri he started running again. Just like that, I'm still not sure exactly what made him change his mind, but it's great to be able to share this sport with eachother. Of course, had he not gotten involved in triathlon I'd have an awesome sherpa and photographer, as it is now I'm on my own for that.

As far as the food issues go, I think it is much harder if your spouse isn't on board with eating healthy. Maybe, you could talk to him about how important it is for you to only have healthy food in the house and try to approach it from a health perspective. He doesn't have to eat this way if he doesn't want to, but you are asking for his support in keeping it out of the house. If that doesn't work you will just have to decide you are not going to eat it even if it is around. I know how difficult that is! But, I have found with the sabotogers in my life (and I do have them) that once they see my commitment they tend to back off. It has taken months, but they do eventually stop.

I'd say eat the whole pan of brownies and don't let him have any and run a little extra the next  day.  If he doesn't get any he will probably quit making them.

sdalessio - 2010-01-25 11:05 AM
dalessit - 2010-01-25 9:57 AM So yesterday I went to a *gasp* public pool, where Sam normally swims.

It was as bad as I have read.

I got in a lane there were already 2 people in it so had to circle swim, 2 more people joined in, then I got out,  5 is too many in a lane for me, impossible to do drills with that many people in the lane, it was supposed to be a "fast" lane, I was catching everyone and I am far from fast.

So I go play with the kids in the other pool while sam does her laps.

Before we leave the lap swim area somewhat clears up, so I can split a lane with someone, we are good.  He gets out and various randoms keep joining.  One guy swam a few laps with his what appeared to be 3 year old on his back...

At one point I had a basketball floating in my lane, swim instructors sending students walking across my lane.

Got kicked 3-4 times by someone in my lane.

I am going back to my nice quiet, lap swimmer only pool at work this week....

Hey I always view swimming at the public pool like a contact sport.  it's good prep for OWS.  Our mistake yesterday was hitting the pool at free senior swim time.  I had my a$s smacked, temple whacked, arm grapped and repeated kicked in the leg.  But so you hear me complaining.  Suck it up buttercup.

Welll you had a least 1 out of the 4 that you probably liked

I'm considering doing a sprint with a pool swim the beginning of April. I've never done a race with a pool swim and, honestly, the idea doesn't really appeal to me, but it's the only way to get early season races in here in the NW. So for those of you who have done pool tri's, any advice, things I should know?

Suzy, I think she meant her husband Doug, not me. I am feelin' fine and expect to run around 33 miles this week in four separate runs starting with about 5-6 miles tomorrow, 7 or so on thursday, 4 on saturday and 17-18 on Sunday.

Trina, how about getting a kitty trailer and stuffing your husband in it while you pull him behind your bike? Think of how much lighter it will feel during the race.

Seriously, you need to sit down with him, talk it out an explain why this is important to you.

Doug

When you submit your estimated 100 yd. time cut 10 seconds from it. When I submit my recent real 100 yd. time, it always seems like I get behind too many people who submitted unrealistic times. One guy Tarzan swam the whole thing. One larger woman had a cap with flowers on it.

Understand the snake pattern they lay out and practice turning and diving under the lane lines.

I have at least two this year, but ironically, my first, in April, is a lake swim.

Good luck

hehe yes I am, but I am ok with that : )

Pool swims...

Seed yourself faster than you can really swim.  Nothing too exotic, but bump it up a bit.  If you don't you will have to swim over/around/under lots of people that have no idea how fast they can swim a 100 in.

If you can do flip turns and go under the lane lines, you will gain sooo much time, at least that is what it looks like when I see others doing them that way vs. my open turns.

Re: evil Husband.  I agree wtih the others. You can't make him do anything like this. He will have to want to. Continue to set a great example, just as you're doing now and I'm sure you will see a change in him too. He may never want to do the same thing but he will certainly enjoy the benefits of you doing it . who knows amybe one day we'll be tlaking to him on the BT website.

I'm sure there are lots of us triathletes whose spouses are not particularly interested in what we do. My wife is one of them. She doesn't seem to understand what drives me to train so much but can appreciate that I am in good shape (perhaps not chiseled). Training does get to be an issue once in a while when I get into full training mode. This year will be better as I am not doing a HIM or IM so won't spend quite as much time training as this past year. She has never shown any interest in running cycling or exercising and at this point probably won't change. I have seen a great response from the people who surround me though. I have 2BIL and 2SIl's  are both into running now. My nephew is more active and my son in law has given up smoking and is working out regularly not to mention the several people at work who are now training for their frist triathlons this year. I know that I am setting a good example for others.

A perspective from someone that was in your husband's shoes. My wife started training and running and well, I was not into it. Seeing her commitment and example on a daily basis eventually became motivation for me. It was hard to keep making excuses for not being healthy when she was, enjoyed it, and had visible positive results. Her perseverance paid off. I finally realized I wanted to look and feel that good too!

who does the cooking and shopping in the house?  If it's you then just start re-shaping the meals.  Fix less, re-tool favorite meals to be healthier and add more veggies.

It's taken years in our house but we eat more veggies and less meat.  Tony still grumbles a little at times esp. this past weekend when I made homemade veggie burgers and kale/mushroom/tofu stir fry Friday and Sat. night.  He survived, of course, I think it's b/c he knew a meat como was coming Sunday during the game.  We had a giant beef brisket from a Christmas present and made chicken wings.  And what night was he sick from dinner - Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost called the fire department about a gas leak!!!!!!!!!!!

While I haven't been married (not yet anyways...not until my brother comes home from Afghanistan), but my fiance does snack and so do I. :-)

Personally, I think everyone is entitled to eat WHATEVER the h-e-double hockey sticks they want, but just eat moderately. If you want a brownie - go for it. Just don't eat 4. When I was in NJ for Christmas, I ate a total of 30 chocolate chip cookies within a week because I really couldn't resist - I still lost some weight...believe it or not.  It's all has to do with eating in moderate.  If you find yourself feeling guilty for eating so much brownies - go out for a run and push yourself just a little faster to make yourself "suffer" for the guilt. I bet you'll feel better afterwards, just don't eat more brownies! :-

Maybe try to encourage him to exchange certain snacks for something with less calories, which is what my fiance did.  Such as celery, fruit bars, Tortillas chips instead of potato chips, and make some smoothies, natural sugars from fruits will make it sweet - maybe he'll like it.  I think exchanging specific sweets may help you and him in the long run.

I think everyone has given very helpful advise.  I second the idea of you being a positive role model.  Just b/c he can't s/b/r doesn't mean you guys can't enjoy being active together.  Long walks, swimming, yoga, roller blading, etc.  I think when he sees the world you are involved in and how positive it is he will come around.

I've taken to taking certain foods out of their original packages and putting them in plastic containers. That way the rest of the family doesn't see it is fat-free XYZ or high fiber cereal.

I just have to post that as much as I love my tri training etc, but I cannot wait until my vacation.  My father in law just emailed me saying that Vail got 10 inches of snow in the past 24 hours.  I leave on the 3rd for 8 days of skiing/snowboarding.  The first few days my father in law and his son and I will be there, then the girls will be flying in to join us for a week and ski 5 of those days.

It will be hard to be away from training what I am used to, but the days the boys are together will be a stretch.  We ski almost open to close, stopping for less than an hour for lunch and a couple hours before going back out for night skiing.

Trina,  one more thing.  I have been involved in Tris for four years.  Both of my boys have also done kids events.  Steven has just now decided to train for a sprint.  I asked him why now and he just said that everyone else in the family had done one so he wanted to also.  I just have to remember now to be positive and encouraging without over-doing it.  If I badger him about any of it he gets annoyed quickly.  Last spring he started to run a little bit and if I got on him about his eating habits he would go do a workout and then grab a beer which would totally throw me over the edge.   He LOVES to push my buttons.    Now I just keep my mouth shut and let him ask me for help.

Keep setting a good example.

Two questions for the experts here!

One - Is there such a thing as a running visor with pockets near the ears?  I'm having issues with my CI coming off (it's a heavy little thing!), every time I run. Sometimes the coil pops off, sometimes the processor comes off. I need to see if there's a visor of some sort with a pocket that I can somehow put my processor in it and still have the cord stick out. My guess is the strap around the head will be able to hold the coil in place.  I'm sure you're looking at me very perplexed...here's a picture taken 2 years ago. I just need "something" to hold the processor in place instead of it bobbing off.  I've tried a hat, and it's terrible.   There is something I can do for the CI itself, which is called a Snug Fit, but it's for babies, and PIA to put it on...I can try again and see if it works, but I rather not.

CI picture

Second question - next post!

Second question -

I go to a different pool for when I do the Swim Clinics for stroke training.  It's a public pool.  The water tastes a little salty, like I'm in an ocean, but has a lot less chlorine than my regular pool. I actually seem to breathe better in the public pool (perhaps because it's in yards, not meters!). However, the last two Saturdays, due to the breathing issues and swallowing water (gross I know, but it's not like I could help it at the moment), and inhaling water by accident - I get running nose all day Saturday and Sunday, and feeling really sick to my stomach.   I don't get stomach sickness issues, but get the nasal dripping issues.

Is there something I can take, eat to help alleviate that issue, especially the queasiness? It's annoying as heck because my nose is dripping for days, then it's fine, then it starts over again.

I only have to put up with this for two more weeks, then I'm done with the Swim Clinic, but I would like to try to help reduce the nose dripping - as I get better at breath strokes will that go away?

CyborgQueen - 2010-01-25 1:52 PM Two questions for the experts here!

One - Is there such a thing as a running visor with pockets near the ears?

I am not sure if you are looking for warm weather or cold weather gear, but here are a few links (not ever having worn anything like your CI, I have no personal experience, but I would imagine that the first one would be most relevant):

Good luck
