Hmm - the Beanie cap is almost what I'm looking for! But I rather a visor - no cold weather gear, I have no need for it. :-)

I may be reaching out here, but I'm just wondering if something I can use exists. :-)

EDIT: THANKS TOBEY! That's exactly what I'm looking for!http://www.ixoundwear.com/

I didn't even think to try to look for shuffle visor thing...if I get the shuffle one, it SHOULD work. I'll look specifically for those! The link you sent me is perfect, but i kind of prefer it to be on my left side instead of my right (I'm bilateral - meaning I have CI's in both ears instead of one like majority CI users have). But it definitely what I'm looking for. Thanks!!

Evil husband made brownies last night!

I was sitting at my computer when I heard sinister laughter coming from the kitchen. Minutes later the smell of brownies was wafting throughout the house. I had a tiny corner piece. Husband is now banned from bringing any sugar into the house, or risks being sent upstairs to sleep.

Seriously though....I think he's feeling a bit insecure. He keeps telling me my body is looking good (he's nearly blind), and he doesn't want to be alone in his moderate obesity. I feel sorry for him Anyone have advice on how they've handled a similar situation with their spouse? Training for a Tri is out for him as his knees are blown from basketball when he was younger.

who does the cooking and shopping in the house?  If it's you then just start re-shaping the meals.  Fix less, re-tool favorite meals to be healthier and add more veggies.

It's taken years in our house but we eat more veggies and less meat.  Tony still grumbles a little at times esp. this past weekend when I made homemade veggie burgers and kale/mushroom/tofu stir fry Friday and Sat. night.  He survived, of course, I think it's b/c he knew a meat como was coming Sunday during the game.  We had a giant beef brisket from a Christmas present and made chicken wings.  And what night was he sick from dinner - Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost called the fire department about a gas leak!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam, that was a delayed reaction from kale!

Trina, its difficult, but you can handle it.  Continue to set the good example and discuss the situation with him.  He will come around.  If you have to remind him that when "momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy..."  then maybe he will get the picture...

CyborgQueen - 2010-01-25 2:05 PM Second question -

I go to a different pool for when I do the Swim Clinics for stroke training.  It's a public pool.  The water tastes a little salty, like I'm in an ocean, but has a lot less chlorine than my regular pool. I actually seem to breathe better in the public pool (perhaps because it's in yards, not meters!). However, the last two Saturdays, due to the breathing issues and swallowing water (gross I know, but it's not like I could help it at the moment), and inhaling water by accident - I get running nose all day Saturday and Sunday, and feeling really sick to my stomach.   I don't get stomach sickness issues, but get the nasal dripping issues.

Is there something I can take, eat to help alleviate that issue, especially the queasiness? It's annoying as heck because my nose is dripping for days, then it's fine, then it starts over again.

I only have to put up with this for two more weeks, then I'm done with the Swim Clinic, but I would like to try to help reduce the nose dripping - as I get better at breath strokes will that go away?

I use either a saline spray or a Neti Pot to flush out my sinuses.  I developed a sinus infection this summer from my nasty lake water and ever since I flush my sinuses regularly.   Either of these can be purchased at your local drug store and are vey cheap and easy to use.

I think everyone has given very helpful advise.  I second the idea of you being a positive role model.  Just b/c he can't s/b/r doesn't mean you guys can't enjoy being active together.  Long walks, swimming, yoga, roller blading, etc.  I think when he sees the world you are involved in and how positive it is he will come around.

I've taken to taking certain foods out of their original packages and putting them in plastic containers. That way the rest of the family doesn't see it is fat-free XYZ or high fiber cereal.

X2 My wife hates running, swimming and biking.  But we golf, hike and took/take boxing lessons together.  I also bought her hip-hop lessons for Christmas that she loves (i didn't join her for that).  Also have you seen the movie Food Inc?  After seeing that movie we both made a conscious effort to eat locally (both veggies and meat, local taste better too) and eat less meat.  My wife is also big on portion control.  Not completely eliminating the foods we love, we just eat much smaller portions of them so we don't crave them and go nuts. Plus my side of the family has some history of health issues and making a healthy change was a easy decision.  I want to be around to see my kid grow-up and we want him to be healthy too.

BTW I had pretty bad knees from basketball too (did the whole rehab thing)...  it's really not an excuse for not living a healthier/active lifestyle..

fattyfatfat - 2010-01-25 12:18 PM Hey DJ have you seen this?

Yes I have. I know Cathy Lee through Facebook - She is hoping that there will be a Triathlon event for Deaf Olympics in 2012. She asked me if I'm interested in joining the team. I told her that I have to complete my FIRST Triathlon then see where I am. I don't want to jump the gun and say this is what I'm going to do for a long time...who knows, I may do one or two years then stop completely.  But it is something that I'm interested in though...we'll see!

ATTENTION SWIM QUESTION:

So today's main set was 800 with a pull buoy.  Every time I got to the wall and turned the stupid buoy would pop out.  It was better when I held it between my thighs, but I think I am supposed ot hold it between my calves.  How do you do turns with the stupid thing?  Funny thing is that I think if I subtracted time from the swim due to fiddling with the buoy I swam as fast with the buoy as without and was breathing much easier the whole time...

Ayup -- definitely between the thighs. If you find you are overly tempted to kick (you are supposed to just drag your legs), try crossing your legs at the ankles.

In college we always used tubes around our ankles -- and pulling was HARD WORK. You got quite a bit of drag off of the tube coiled around the ankles. Pull buoys are much more user-friendly, IMO!

We did homemade pizza yesterday using a dough with some olive oil in it.  My daughter wanted to be "homemade" so we bought roma tomatoes, fresh oregano, thyme, and basil, and onions - cooked it in the oven for a couple hours and then blended it and simmered it with some pinot grigio for 45 minutes for a truely home made sauce.  We then used fresh mushrooms, Canadian bacon (back bacon for you hosers up north) and fresh mozz....  It was amazingly good stuff and probably better for me than Papa Johns....

We did scratch made macaroni and cheese the day before with sharp cheddar and gruyere.  We also put a little chopped bacon and meat from a rotissirie chicken in the mac and cheese...  I topped it with some panko bread crumbs to give a good crusty top....  It was tasty too...  (I had left overs mac & cheese for lunch today and it was just as good heated up again!)

Dang - now I went and made myself hungry again!

If anyone wants, it would be fun to setup a blog of sorts, or atleast a shared google spreadsheet that we can share recipes.  I LOVE cooking/baking and am always looking for new ideas, plus have a few things that are really big hits in my family.  We could divide up by healthy eats and just really good recipes.

If there is interest I can get something setup and start adding people to a shared spreadsheet or blog rights if people want to go that route (Always nice to have pictures of things)

We do have a google account where we were putting pictures and our challenge spreadsheets from last year if interested.

Also, maybe we should do our virtual Tri for the month of February?

Any thoughts?

Hey folks!  Was away all weekend without internet connection (gahh!) and had a pretty busy day today so just finally getting caught up.  Looks like some great training was done over the weekend.  I did a lot of skiing (not as good as the skiing Jeff will be doing in another week but OK for Northeast skiing) and ended with a short run last night.

This will be a lighter week for me as I will be in a training class for the next three days so I will miss my lunchtime workouts.  Still plan to get my masters swim on Tues and Thurs and then need to figure out how to get some biking and running in.  Could be some late nights if I do get it in.

As for the Virtual Tri...I am in but I am in the group that might not get outside on the bike until March.

Have a great week!

My turn to vent: From my log today:

Total guess at distance. Swam at a different pool after work. They do a poor job of keeping people in the correct lanes. I had a lady teaching her teenager how to do strokes, etc in my lane, stopping half way down the pool some time. So I literally gave up on doing the workout as I couldnt keep track of where I was at.GRRRRRRR

Best part is, I was in the 'fast' lane.
I'm all for people getting back into shape, etc, etc 'cause we've all been there. But, see the big sign at the end that says "SLOW" MEDIUM" "FAST"?? Follow them please... They were good at getting out of the way, but there were times when I would swim up behind the girl, and she literally jumped up out of the pool on the side because I was behind her.
Good times.....

Anyway, I sat him down and told him to PLEASE not bring anymore sweets in the house. I told him how important it was for me to lose weight so I won't get injured while training. Hopefully the fear of medical bills will motivate him to comply with my wishes.

I went to a Tri Expo at the Y tonight. Very informative. Signed-up for my first tri - Now I'm so excited I can't stand it! I want to do it now! Did a TT today....I swim 300 yards in 7 mins 45 seconds. Yes, I'm slow, but at least I know I can swim 300 yards without stopping to rest! Yay!

Yay!

SWEEETTTT...When is the first tri again? Its indoor right?

jvanis - 2010-01-25 7:24 PM If anyone wants, it would be fun to setup a blog of sorts, or atleast a shared google spreadsheet that we can share recipes.

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I keep reading about awesome dishes in people's training logs, and I'm drooling and totally jealous!! I love to cook seasonal and local with a heavy slant on vegetarian. I'll do chicken and turkey and buffalo, but that's about it. Love fish, but get paralyzed in the buying process so we don't eat it as often as we should. My husband doesn't really like vegetables, so he often doesn't like what I cook. But I'm convinced if I cooked the right things the right way he'd see the light. I keep trying -- and eating all of the leftovers after he politely picks at his plate over dinner. My kids eat like kids (cereal, pizza, quesadillas), although my daughter has an open mind and tries everything (and likes some of them).
