Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by laffinrock Originally posted by rrrunner That sounds "interesting," I'll agree with you on that! So I found an.... interesting challenge for a race this year. It is a four day event, a marathon each day, at Four Corners. One marathon each day in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. It's run by the same group that does the Antelope Canyon Ultra that Lisa did last year. It's in December. So, if DS2 and I are able to swing the Dopey Challenge in 2019 then I'll probably do the HM's instead. If DS2 and I can't/don't get in to Dopey, then I think I'm doing a quad marathon in December. Jensie just did seven and he's not even a runner!!!! They (an organization within Navajo Nation) also have a couple neat looking, shorter distance, races up near the Grand Canyon that I might do. Ha, I guess it's that Ultra bug coming back. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition OPEN Originally posted by rrrunner Originally posted by jmkizer Originally posted by cdban66 Originally posted by Hot Runner With training before work, it really helps to pay attention to your post-workout nutrition and hydration. I do 90% of my training between 5 and 6:30 AM. Work involves being on my feet most of the day (teaching elementary school, coaching). I know I would not make it through the day without a really solid breakfast and lunch with plenty of calories, carbs, protein, and healthy fat. It's also easy to under-hydrate and then feel the effects throughout the workday as low energy, muscle aches, headache, etc. Also some judiciously timed caffeine. If you don't need to be at work till noon, maybe you could also find time to take a little physical/mental break between workout and work. I don't--I sometimes jokingly refer to my daily routine as eattraineatteacheatteachcoachtraineatsleep (with zero pause in between) but I think if I could, it would help a lot! Yes indeed, I'm convinced there are at least 6 disciplines to this triathlon thing, S/B/R is half, but so is Nutrition/Plan/Recover. If you find yourself being tired during the work part, you may need to make some adjustments to the eating or recovery or training methods to maximize your gains. Keep in mind too that (as many people have been quoted) it doesn't get easier, you get stronger. So keep working, but learn from it all and don't be afraid to adjust where you need to. When I am doing Big Training, I know that I need to stock reasonable snacks at work. I also think that Karen is right, start with hydration. If, after drinking quite a bit of appropriate fluids you are still hungry, move on to calories. I'm actually way better about hydration when I am at work because I am in a routine -- must drink at least half of my nalgene bottle of water before moving on to coffee, etc. Huh??????????????? I know! |

That race organization is really great - I've just done that one race by them, but have friends who have done others (Bryce Canyon, Zion, etc.). Good people, great stewards of the land, well run events, and at Antelope Canyon the post race food was out of this world. Cooked by local Navajo people - you could choose from a make-your-own flatbread pizza fresh cooked over a hot fire/grill, or a huge bowl of slow cooked rice and beans. I cannot tell you how much that hit the spot after 35 miles in the sand. |

My hands are so bad from excema and contact dermatitis, I can't swim right now. I was told until my wrist heals to not wear it again. Garmin and my Dr. told me that. I have a trainer for my bike, but I am concerned that I have to keep my bike and trainer in an unheated garage due to space in the house I bought. I didn't know if that would damage my bike in any way? Suddenly using it. Should the bike "thaw"? I have cadence sensors on my road bike KHS Flight 500 52 cm frame aka "Black Beauty" My garmin was what I had paired with the sensors to track my speed, cadence, watts etc. I don't know if there is a free program I can use on my comp to sync that data, cause I'm really strapped right now. Thanks |

Thanks Do you have a smartphone? What kind? Some have ANT+ sensors built in and that can be doable on a trainer. For example, I know that Samsung phones have ANT+ built in. I'm assuming that your speed/cadence sensors are Garmin branded? I rode my bike outside last weekend in the cold -- 18F at the start of the ride. It certainly didn't thaw! From what I understand, the only things that is if you bring it indoors and then want to use a powermeter. If you are are not changing from one temperature zone to another, I don't think that it matters. As you increase your ride duaration, you may want to use your trainer since your bike is more of an exact fit to you than the gym bike and since you can clip in. Another option would be a spin bike which is probably a little bit closer to your road/tri bike and would allow you to clip in. Some spin classes are geared for triathletes and roadies and they can be a good option as well (other spin classes are geared towards non cyclists. watch out for them!). |

You should probably be more concerned about attacks on YOUR leg, not the bike's. :D Seriously, I can't imagine that they'd continue to hold the race if the monkeys were getting too aggressive. After a quick Google search, it appears that the zone is 12K, so not terribly long, and I didn't find any reports of actual attacks. One blogger mentioned seeing monkeys sucking on water bottles and gels, but that was it. DOOOO EEEEETTT!!! (Nothing like a little peer pressure to get you off the fence. Just ask TJ.) |
