I CRASHED MY BIKE!!

When I started my ride, the weather was nice. Then this stupid little storm cloud decided to follow me around and rain on me.  "No worries" I thought.  "I'll just HTFU".

at 9 miles in - cruising at about 25 mph on a flat and I see railroad tracks.  They are running at a diagonal angle across the road.  The first track was recessed into the road.  The 2nd track was not!!! My wet tire, hit the wet metal that was sitting above the road about 2 inches.  It slide at a diagonal angle and down I went.  I didn't have time to pop my front tire up over the railroad track.  I haven't had to worry about tracks in this area, as they are all normally recessed into the road.

A car was passing me, and there was no shoulder.  I fell into the road, and I remember the car being pretty close to me.

Of course, the first thing I did was jump up and check my bike!    Had to make sure my baby was ok.  I couldn't help it, my protective fatherly instincts kicked in.

My calf cramped up - and I have a bit of road rash.  I also have a pretty good gash on my left elbow, but I'll be ok.  My baby had no scratches in the paint.  Only the left peddle got a good scrape.

Totally sucks, but mostly because I couldn't finish my ride, and I didn't do my run.  Also had to cancel my swim lesson with my client.

Well, they there are those who have crashed and those who will, so welcome to the club!!

Glad you're OK!!!  That's pretty scary going down at that speed.  In traffic.  In contrast, my big three falls have consisted of:

  • crashing into the garbage cans in my driveway unclipping
  • falling over into the street in front of my house clipping in
  • going down hard at about 8 mph catching milled pavement

Take good care of the road rash...mine got infected and I needed a round of antibiotics.  And, yeah, no pool for a bit.

My Left hip

My Back (not too bad really)

My elbow (it got the worst of it)

Is it wrong to save that middle pic as my screensaver?

Take care - shower is gonna hurt!  Glad the bike is okay as are you.

x

Jo-you are too funny.

I was actually going to say THANK YOU for crashing your bike!  The middle pic definitely was eye candy, although a more front shot next time with abs would be appreciated.

Welcome to the bike crashing club!  Wear those war wounds proud, everyone crashes.  We are just glad you are okay to take hot piglet pictures! Ice and motrin.  You will be sore.

How is the bike?

Originally posted by bcraht Ok wo- and manatees, need some suggestions/advice.  I am racing an Oly this Sunday, so 10km run.  My longest run to this point since coming back was last Sunday at about 9.5km.  So I certainly don't think it is safe to 'race' 10km at this point.  But, I raced the 5km at my sprint.  To this point, my long runs are consisting of run 1km, walk 1min.  So for the Oly, do I run the first 5km (whether I run it all or run/walk) and then race the last 5km depending how I feel?  Or run/walk the first few km, then build as I feel?  Or just treat it as my long run for the week (which I am fine with, I can race the swim and bike and train through the run).  Whaddy'all think?

How are you feeling about your bike for this weekend?  If you feel good about that, I'd bike my heart out and make it more of a long run for the week.  Probably faster than normal pace but not racing, if you know what I mean.

That is very scary. I have to go over really horrible tracks at least twice on every ride I do. Recessed? Hardly. I am super cautious. I'm glad you (and your bike) are okay.

Good morning, podmates    I'm back in AZ.  106* at the airport when we got in last night...112* record high forecast for today. Oh boy :/ I think my rides/runs outside are going to be few and far between for the next 3 months.

KS was lots of fun, and I had some good MIL time while the guys were away. Sorry for the silence and inconsistency...I gave up trying to keep up with everything on my phone.

I'm supposed to head out on vacation tomorrow . Of course, the air traffic controllers in France ( where I'm going) are on strike. It is a planned 3 day strike that is supposed to end tomorrow , so hopefully I will be able to get in. On top of that concern though is that I'm connecting through New York where they are predicting severe weather to include winds, floods and thunderstorms. So lets all send good weather thoughts to New York and get back to work thoughts to France! I need this vacation

Bike crashing, yikes! Very glad you are ok but for some scratches and bruises.  See, this is why I ride my bike so slow - 25 mph is just too risky Tongue out  Yeah, that's why...

You all need to fire me.   I did not get to the spreadsheet today.  I guess you all will have to wait until Friday.  I promise, I promise, I promise.   I am stalking all of you, I just don't have time to make it all pretty and post.

Trainer thing is falling apart again, sort of, maybe, maybe not, who knows.

Mr. runner trainer that I was meeting with emailed me this morning to say that he was instructed by his superiors that he could not train me (basically, he costs more as he is much more experienced that the loser guy).   They are shuffling me to some loser newbie.  Yes, I have a bad attitude about that.

Mr. runner trainer offered to meet with me, off the record and grid, for a goal setting discussion.  By the end of the meeting I was more excited than I have been in a long time about my potential.  Mr. hot piglet runner trainer (long curly blond hair and very kind blue eyes) gave me his personal email and cell phone and will work with me "off the record".  He is going to go to the manager and tell him that he wants to work with me and he really thinks that he can help, "afterall isn't that what this company is supposed to be about, helping clients meet their goals?"   His words, not mine.

I learned so much in that hour from him.  He has a Masters in Exercise Physiology, certification in Pilates, some sort of degree in sports nutrition and has worked for the Hansons (Hansons-Brooks Distance Project). He totally trains with the Hansons Marathon Method and we talked all about the science behind it, which for a science geek like me was so interesting.

He made me believe in me!  He even said that every time he meets with a runner he draws energy from their enthusiasm.  He said he had been more motivated to sign up for a marathon (Big Sur in particular) than he has in a long time.  He said he stopped doing that distance at 17 marathons.  He was shocked that my PR is on the Big Sur course.  He made me set a goal of 4:59:59 for Marine Corps and we set up my next 2 weeks of training (marathon, not personal).

Really hoping he gets to train me.  If not, at least I have a plan and a back up plan.  He will get me in with Luke Humphrey (author of the Hansons Marathon Method) for coaching, if he can't train/coach me because of his employer.

I am so glad I went and met with him.  People come in and out of your life for a reason, I am glad one is out and I am so happy this one has come in.

This guy sounds AMAZING!!  I hope your gym recognizes his rationale--what if you agree to a shorter term than the original plan to off set the cost? I would be in hog heaven working with a  trainer with that kind of experience  let alone a hot curly blonde piglet!
Shut down. . Gym is sticking with a newbie. Surfer runner trainer tried. We will keep in contact via personal email and he will stalk my progress with newbie ultra runner trainer. Making lemonade now. If I have to have a stalker, at least it is a hot piglet.

BOOO to the gym!!  After all you've been through, that's REALLY lame!  I'm glad he is going to help you, though.
