Extreme Veteran 378 Warwick, Rhode Island | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread What a day! That swim was epic... Today was a good day for the team. My wife and dad both finished (6:42 and 7:07 respectively). I managed a 45 minute PB for the half-iron distace (6:13). I will take it! Great job to all today! Vin |

Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Did anyone else think it was a joke when they made the announcement that if you didn't want to do the swim, you should go hang out at the kids playground? seriously - when a storm blows away a sizeable portion of the swim course - that should tell you something. But definitely loved the tail wind on the bike through Narrangansett! my only bike FUBAR momeny was during the swim, got my bearings off, stopped swimming, bobbed in the water to look up and saw a whole wave of swimmers coming at me. I'd been swimming in the wrong F-ing direction. Oops!
Otherwise, very happy with the race. And I definitely won the lottery with my black and green bag pick-up as I found a far corner and a nice volunteer snagged my bag - what a joke that bag collection was - 1700 bags laying on the ground...
btw: I proudly walked College Hill BOTH times! |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Congrats everyone and it was a pleassure meeting a few of you. Sorry I didn't get to see many but since it was a big race I was in lockdown mode I managed a 4:24 hr finish but you know the studs showed up to race when that time was only good enough for 9th AG. So I came short from my kona slot goal, yet it was a fun race and I am very happy how my fitness is coming along and I had a great run (1:20:59 hrs) I thought the race was very well run and I enjoyed the day very much. Besides the choppy swim and a bit the sun on the 2nd part of the run I think we got lucky with great racing weather. Again congrats everyone! |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread That was a great race--I had a great time. I thought about going to check out The Hill on Saturday, and decided not to, so the first time I laid eyes on it was today when I was about to climb it. I'm glad I didn't go yesterday--it wouldn't have helped and it would have just been in my head all day. I thought, other than the bag check, it was a really well-run race. I was standing outside the bag-drop when I happened to see mine on the ground, so I just went and got it. That was a cluster-fizzle, but otherwise, I thought they did great. Sorry I didn't get to meet more of you--hope everyone had a good race. I'm really happy with my time: 6:04:03; not bad considering it was my first 1/2 and my only goal was to finish. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread I had an incredible race, set a PR of 26 minutes with 5:50:17. I'm still beaming over it, it was perfect for me from beginning to end, even the crazy swim since I had a non-time-related swim goal that the conditions really allowed me to achieve. I finally got to meet Bobby (Dream Chaser) after almost a year's worth of exchanging inspires. Got to meet Kristin (kristinc0916) for a flash as transition closed this morning. Got to ride public transportation with Jonah (jmk-brooklyn) at 4am in the wind/cold/rain for the second time in three months. And designated Mat (newyorkfan21) my new best friend for the weekend (thanks Mat!). Fun race, agree it was flawless despite the crappy pre-race info. Hope everyone had a great day! |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Congrats to everyone who PR'd!! I PR'd myself with a 5:15 --- and after my vow last year to not walk the hill , I kept my promise to myself and ran it both times. First time was around a 10:00 pace ; second time was around a 13:00 pace! But I did not walk a step of the HILL or the run at all, which is huge for me. Jorge... dude... your beat Desiree Ficker ... 2nd WPRO, that's amazing! It was nice meeting a lot of you! |

Master 1963 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread I raced yesterday too. I thought overall everything was run pretty well. The last 6 miles on the bike seemed to take an eternity with all those turns and railroad tracks This was my first tri and therefore my first 70.3 I think I did pretty well but I felt really tired on the run. I didn't realize the run aid stations had pretzels but once I found those it really helped (I think it was the SALT). I wanted more out of myself on the run but overall enjoyed the race (including the swim which I thought was a blast) As I was leaving the hotel I ran into this poor guy who crashed on the bike, concussion, broken collar bone. He doesn't even remember what happened. I saw him packing up (his wife was going to drive), they had Ohio plates I hope he heals up. Edited by merlin2375 2009-07-13 6:50 AM |

Regular 100 Southern NH | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread 5:36, first 70.3. Had a great time, loved the swim (30 feet in a guy in front of said F-this and turned around). Ran the hill both times and never walked. So far I'm not that sore today. My family came with me and we stayed down near the swim. I highly recommend doing this if you can. I never hit traffic and my wife was right next to the swim exit so i stripped off my wetsuit and tossed it to her, I never checked a bag. THANK YOU to everyone for all the advice and help. Like soemone who posted above the first time a saw the hill was just before I climbed it which I think is a good move. |

My wave (Neon Green) was lined up on the beach and I saw a white cap guy stand up, turn around and walk out. It's not exactly what you want to see as you're getting ready to dive into the choppy ocean! |

I don't feel like flatter races are necessarily easier. I think they can be faster if the conditions are right. I did IMNO 70.3 and it's dead flat, but we had 20+mph head winds and the heat/humidity were killer so while it was flat, it was hard in other ways. That said, I think RI was a much more difficult course, but I think it's fine for a first-timer as long as you're not afraid of an ocean swim (I know you live there so I'm sure you're fine with it) and a hilly run. The bike course is phenomenal, I think it's just the right level of challenge without being too crazy. It's practically in your backyard, you should totally do it! |

So it was a good day. For all the running around between transitions I think the race was ran very smooth. The course has it's challenges both the bike and run. Not bad for a first race. |

Even if the race was flat I wouldn't recommend this race unless you enjoy lines and traffic jams. The point to point thing with this many people in this state this time of year just doesn't make sense and it is a major hassle. This was their second try and they did not pull it off. I wouldn't give them another year to figure it out. I'm not sure where you are from, but if you are in RI and want to do a half iron, do FIRM man in September or Patriot Half Iron over in MA. If you want to do an Ironman brand half iron, pick another one. Yes, it was that bad. Edited by steven_lohmann 2009-07-13 12:45 PM |

If you want to do an Ironman brand half iron, pick another one. Yes, it was that bad.My opinion and experience was the opposite. Going down to T2 I sat in traffic for 20 mins Saturday morning. This was the only traffic I experienced. This was my 2nd time doing this race and I may very well do it next year as well. I think they pulled off a great race. I had a 3-yr-old and a 5-yr-old in tow and they had a great weekend, too. The key is to go to the Expo on Friday (zero lines, zero wait time) and go down to T2 early Saturday morning so you only hit a little bit of traffic and then you can even enjoy the beautiful beach right next door. The beach has fine white, exotic-like sand and the water is very clear. The city of Providence was also a lot of fun. This was my first HIM last year and I'm glad it was. I will definitely be doing this race again in the future. My wife and two kids had a blast. |

I saw him packing up (his wife was going to drive), they had Ohio plates I hope he heals up. might have been the guy who crashed HARD-CORE right in front of me at about mile 50 - in all the traffic. cabbie pulled out, blocking the bike lane. I swerved to the right of the cab, he went left and got stuck on the left side of the line of cars. At the intersection, he tried to swerve back to the right of traffic, swerved to far. He got caught on the curb, hit a telephone pole with his handlebars and went FLYING. I locked up the brakes and just missed running over him as he went flying back across the street in front of me. By the time I stopped completely and unclipped, I looked back and he was standing up saying he was alright. A couple volunteers stepped up to help, so I went on. But the crash was so violent (as he was going at least 25 mph - we were coming off a downhill portion) - thought for sure he broke something. Just prayed he was alright. |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread X2. We came up Friday and breezed through registration and check-in. We had originally planned to go down to the beach early Saturday, but my son was sick and we got a late start. We sat in traffic for a while, but I would have expected beach traffic on a Saturday in July, that’s why I wanted to go down early. Other than that (and the bag pick-up) I thought it was pretty well-organized and well run for an event this size. I’m sure there are races with less red tape but I wouldn’t tell someone to cross this off the list solely on the basis of the logistics. Having said that, if you can’t come to registration on Friday, and have to drive into Providence, check into your hotel, register at check-in for the race, drop your bike in Narragansett and drop your run bag in T2 all on the same day, it would be a PIA. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread I hit the beach traffic both ways to T1, each trip took about an hour, but I think that's normal. I was the only person at check-in Friday night at 6 and I was at the expo on Saturday morning when it opened and the lines were moving quickly. I only waited 5 minutes for bags - did others wait longer? I think they were doing a fine job managing the process. I waited over an hour for my bag after the NYC Half Marathon a couple years ago so it could be worse. The only thing I thought was totally unacceptable was the lack of pre-race information, which will hurt the race in the future if they don't fix it. Otherwise, I'd say this was a really well run event. I'd do it next year if it weren't so close to IMLP. |

Master 1963 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread This was my first tri, but it seems to me any event where the transitions are in way different places it's going to seem long. I thought it was generally well done but did feel there was a lot of running around getting stuff in place. Last year (I volunteered) the bike drop off was mandatory on Saturday. I think they tried to alleviate that by allowing folks to just bring their bike Sunday morning. I did the saturday thing because I didn't want to be messing with my bike on Sunday morning. I thought the course was fairly difficult most because there were so many rollers + the big climb at the end of the bike in addition to the hillyness of the run (not just college hill). It felt like there were very few times when you were actually flat and that most of the time you were ascending or descending. Everybody focuses on that monster run hill but the bike features a lot of rollers too. I have no frame of reference from another tri but I thought it was hilly and challenging and I trained on a lot of hills. |
