dalessit - 2009-12-16 10:14 AM No racing for me anymore this year that I know of, unless I decide to do the New Years Eve 4 miler...

Thankful that I was able to get in so many different events this year.

Mtn Bike Race, 1/2 marathon, Marathon, 2 x 10 milers, etc, etc.

Just wish I could have gotten in that road bike race, thats one of the goals for next year.

Oh and Sam will be hung over because we have my company x-mas party on Friday.  Small company, close group, so we all drink too much at the x-mas party.

Please do not send us any xerox photographs

Aww I'm hurt!

Sam, I know you are too classy for that...  Tony on the other hand...  eewww.....

It dawned on me, the racing might be subsiding a bit for some of us, so how about a new question for the week?  What is the one thing you are most proud of in your '09 triathlon season and why?  if you haven't done a tri yet, what are you most proud of accomplishing athletically?

I was fortunate in 2009 and have several things I am proud of.  I completed my first HIM, took almost 40 minutes off my SavageMan Olympic time from last year, gggggggrrrrr,  took 20 minutes off my Army 10 Miler time and completed a 2 mile ocean swim - first time swimming that distance and in the ocean to boot.

Wow, those were a lot of good accomplishments!  SavageMan is tough enough and to take off 40 min. is amazing.  Congrats on your 2 mile ocean swim too!

I did my first couple of tris and duathlons and placed first in my AG for 3 of them.  I ran my first marathon and BQ'd for Boston.  I did OWS in the Atlantic too!

Holy cow - you're like a real athlete.... Not me, I am a completer - not a compete-r.....

What am I happy about for 2009???
-Staying Happy, Heathly, and injury free for the year.
-Helping my sister finish her 1st 1/2 marathon (all the while remaining "Bob the Trainer", and never turning into to "Jillian the Trainer.")  She finished 2:04 (secretly I was trying to push her sub 2:00).

-Setting a PR @ 70.3 by 20 minutes in less than ideal conditions (See pictures below- They are actual race photos!--- BRUTAL)
-Setting a PR @ an Oly by 15 minutes (finishing 2nd in AG, 17th overall)

-Most importantly aside from my immediate family- my family here in my MG group- watching their progressions throughout the year.  I saw BQ qualifiers, 1st Tri's, 1st Full Ironmans, 1st 1/2 Ironmans, etc... I watched people fail only to be lifted up by the other members of this group and come back stronger, etc..... This TRUELY is a great place!!

sdalessio - 2009-12-16 9:59 AM I'm racing! I still have my sub 25min. 5k goal (25:19 PR) but ...
the race is Sat. and I'm going to be hung over and I've lost some speed from my fall marathon training so
I'll just have to do the best I can!!!!!!!!!

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why do you have to be hung over??

I am going to my husband's work Christmas party the night before which is a small group of good friends.  And sadly since i don't drink much while training even a glass or two of whatever will leaving my feeeling some effect the next morning.

And a fun Christmas 5k is not enough of a reason for me to abstain.

I don't think you NEED to be hungover...I just think it helps.

LOL, so my daily plan today.

45 minutes strength.
45 minutes run.

Go home, eat dinner.

Go to bike shop for client appreciation night.  Our coach works out of this swanky bike shop that is kind of a country club.  You can pay a monthly fee and they have a few workout machines, fancy locker rooms, all the testing equipment you could ever imagine, and bike lockers to store your stuff.  They are have some sales and such for this event.

Then we are headed to a bar in Georgetown to eat wings and drink beer at happy hour prices.

I figure the 90 minutes of workout should balance it all out...

The thing I'm most proud of is my first marathon last April. For the first 36 years of my life I was convinced that I was just NOT a runner. I had tried several times to run, because for some reason I always liked the idea, but I couldn't go more than a couple minutes without feeling like I was going to die. I had literally never ran a mile in my life, not even as a kid.  So, when I stepped up to the starting line at the Yakima River Canyon Marathon, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I was even a little choked up starting that race. I knew the determination it had taken to get to where I was, and I knew I could run that race, me the girl who was "just not a runner".  It was about so much more than just running. It was knowing that anything is indeed possible and breaking down those preconceived ideas that hold us back. And, I did run every step of that marathon.

My first HIM Boise 70.3 in a torrential downpour was pretty good too

edited to add: there was 2 years of learning to run and training between being a nonrunner and doing that marathon. lol

Yup me too except 1 hr. swim and 1 hr. bike.

So that could be 2 hungover mornings in a week  UGH!!!!!!!!!!!  followed by 2 early morning runs since I'm running to work tomorrow AM in the freezing cold.  Oh and I just remembered my work happy hour/gift exchange is Thurs. afternoon where we all go to a bar, drink and steal each others gifts.

I swear I don't drink that much but hey when in Rome ...

Roni - you are my hero.  I am so not a runner and at the moment don't even enjoy it.  I remember when you joined the group and I noticed that your run times were close to mine. That gave me so much encouragement throughout the year.  I always thought a "runner" had to be a sub 8 min/miler or something rediculously fast like that.  But you taught me that being a runner is a state of mind and a determination to accompish your goals.  Your training and races have been so wonderful this year.  Plus I want your six pack abs Wink

Sam I am so with you girl.  I didn't drink at all during the summer and as of last weekend's company and tri training group Christmas parties I am a mess.  Sad that a long island ice tea and a shot of tequila is enough to make me dance on the tables.  I'm such a cheap drunk.

DJ,DJ,DJ....Its all about the Garmin 310xt now.  It's pricier than the 305, but i like it.That may be what you were alluding to with the'triathlon watch.'

Waterproof is awesome. Wear it on the swim,(no GPS for OWS though). But then its on your wrist for bike & run. No fiddling around with mounts, etc. And also, that way you only need to wear one watch...right Tracy Tongue out

I have a triathlon watch only because it was cheaper and I didn't really feel that I needed the Garmin GPS features at the time. If I were to get one now, I would go 305 all the way.

And I am all for drinking over the holidays (and other days as well ), I just didn't know if there was a reason that was worth more than a new PR.

Yeah, I have Garmin 310 envy. Currently have the 305 which I like--but would love to be able to have just one and not deal with mounting. How does the 310 do in the pool for tracking distance? (I have to rely on my lane mate to give me our ballpark distance as I lose count on laps after 3 or so...)

@tri-chick--Mmmm... Peanut butter on a spoon... I am a potato girl myself and I love me some carbs. Eating right now actually.

I am not racing this weekend. Trying to get myself back on the Pfitz 18/55 plan but think at this point its too late for the LA marathon. Looks like I may push back to the OC marathon so as not to feel guilty...

Today was 45 min swim and tonite's agenda is an hour on the trainer and some weights...

For those that are IMing or have--are the weekly average totals that are up on ironman.com realistic (11K swim, 232 mile bike, and 44 mile run)? Did you guys really hit that???

I would suggest a 305, and either a Timex, or a Polar (if budget permits)....

Garmin is great for biking, running, hiking, etc.... While the 310tx would be nice for open water swimming it does no good in the pool (let's be honest most of us train in the pool the majority of the time).  So go Garmin, other.... I use 305 for training (mostly running) and Polar for racing.  Plus the polar is more of an everyday watch.  I wouldn't wear the 310 around town.

If you are going Power Tapp, Open water majority of the time then I would consider the 310tx.  But bang for buck.... 305- Check ebay, craigslist.  You can find them cheap.  I got my 305 for $100

I LOVE reading about people's proud 2009 accomplishment!! It gives me total goosebumps and is totally inspiring and motivating and awesome! Yay!!

I have two proud moments: Finishing my first HIM 17 minutes faster than my pie-in-the-sky goal time. And FINALLY breaking 4:00 in the Portland marathon and setting a PR by 14 minutes with my 3:57. This was especially poignant for me because in Jan. 07 I ran the Phoenix RnR with my father-in-law and I was going for  HUGE PR. I had trained my arse off and the course was flat. But I got very sick a few weeks prior, plus sprained my ankle, and it all went to hell in a handbasket. It was my first marathon that I did not PR and I hated nearly every step of it. It broke me down mentally, pissed me off, and was just bad for me. Just one year later my father-in-law was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia and we lost him 6 mos. later (this past July). My Portland marathon was payback for my discouraging race in Arizona... and I ran thinking of my f-in-law every step of the way. So it was totally emotional and fabulous and I hated that he wasn't there for a phone call or a hug at the end of it. (As an aside, he started running at age 60 and ran his first marathon after doing only 13 miles for a long run; qualified for Boston the next year... died just before he 66th birthday.)

OK -- that was an emotional dump. Sorry to drag you into my drama -- but my proudest moment would have been less proud without the backstory.
