I melt in the heat quicker than an ice cream cone.  Once you finish, please send someone out to pick me up.  I will be the one laying on the side of the road at about mile 4 of the run.

High in Lawence yetserday was 87 degrees. Tom and I both got heat rash all over (including my face/eyes) after riding 56 miles and running for about 20 minutes. Yikes.

Betting that the asphalt increases the temps considerably. Pray for cloud cover!

So ... since my HIM plan ended a week early, how much am I supposed to run/bike/swim the next two weeks. Regardless, I'm going to try to get in some OWS and work on sighting and whatnot since everything to this point has been in a pool.

My plan has about 6.5 hours this week with high intensity workouts and then 3.5 next week all easy. It calls for OWS, a couple medium length runs and bikes, next week has a few all 3 event days but most are like 20 min of each.

Luckily with the three lap run, you (and me) should be close to the start when they find us.

To date, 1,450 miles on the bike this year, 1,300 of them with at least knee warmers and long sleeve jersey, most with at least my wind jacket, soooo not ready for heat.

This homefry doesn't do well in the heat.

I pretty much wanted to throw in the towel at about mile 40 on the course as well.

I'm at great risk for not making the cut offs.

And that scares the crap outta me.

I'm so frustrated right now.

I think some of you might find this helpful, it's for full IM distance, but some of the info will be beneficial for 70.3 as well.

It goes without saying but everyone needs to think about heat proofing.  A few ideas:

  • Take a bandanna, fill it with ice and tie it around your neck.  Very effective.
  • Take sponges and put them under your hat.
  • Hat not a visor

Anyone have favorite heat beating techniques?

Pour two cups of water on my head at each aid station. Also, run with a water bottle and fill it up when needed. Sometimes you need water more often than every mile when it is that hot.

x2. I am taking a water bottle on the run with me. I do this on my long training runs as-is. I plan to take Gatorade at the aid stations but have the water with me at all times. If I get tired of carrying it I will just throw it away at an aid station.

Carrying water last weekend was a LIFE SAVER as well when salt poured into my eyes on my run due to a heavy sweat rate (after riding 56 miles in the heat). My eyes stung so bad, I could not open them or see anything. I used the clean water in my water bottle to wash my eyes out. So glad I had it.

Don't know the weather in everyone elses's neighborhoods, but it will consistently be 90-degrees+ where I live for the next two weeks. I plan on getting out at the hottest time of the day for some heat training - even if it is just light taper stuff.

Dood chill out homesickle! You're going to do fine. Remember to breathe. As Miyagi says ... `No breast. No life.' Or something like that. I don't understand the Japanese language.

I actually am hoping for some major heat but it looks like the hottest it's going to get is like 85 here. I'm going to start planning for the heat now. I got in a schwag bag once one of those head sweat thingies that looks kind of like a jester's hat that you put in water then on your head. It's supposed to keep you cool, so I may try that out this week sometime. I hate wearing headgear on the run, and I hate carrying anything, so I may just try to tough it.

I hope you're practicing your serenade

I'll be running with my fuel belt and visor (i soak the brim when it gets hot). I typically only use 2 small bottles, but may use more...although the aid stations are 1-1.5 miles apart...so maybe I'll be okay with just 2. Who knows.

Training Day with Enduro camps the suggested a visor over a hat unless you ar putting sponges under the hat. The visor will let the heat out. I'll be carrying my fuel belt for water/gatorade between stations. I plan on puring plenty of water overmyself at the aid stations as well. Make sure you wear some light colored clothing.

Staying hydrated on the bike will help a lot. I drink 4 water bottles and a bottle of gatorade out there last saturday and it seemed to work well. I'll probably freeze one water bottle for my bike that I plan on using later in the bike ride, that will help me have colder water in the hot part of the day. Colder water = cooler body. If you come off the bike hydrated your body will sweat and cool yourself off much better. I may also carry a towel to wipe the sweat off. If its humid that warm sweat could have a tough time evaporating off.

Beware of drinking water that's TOO cold. In boot camp in August in San Antonio we weren't allowed to have cold water in our canteens because of potential problems with the body going into shock. We all thought it was bunk until during the honor graduate run one of the guys decided to cheat and get water from one of the water fountains at the training center instead of in the barracks and about mile 2 he was swerving like he'd had a bottle of whiskey.

I'm sure the water will warm up quickly, but be careful of water that's TOO cold.

I'm all about room-temp water.

Surface temp...I'd guess the water a foot deep is much cooler.
