Awesome job. Thanks! Despite my screenname, I usually DON'T have pink (or any other crazy color) hair. I did it for charity - people got to vote on a haircolor as they donated to our local animal shelter and the color that "raised" the most money would be what I dyed it. It DID get a lot of comments through the day though. I saw you a bunch of times too! Looked cute

Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Cornick, you definitely get the BT Bad A$$ award!! Wow! Doug, sorry to hear about the swim fiasco. I too DNF'd and had a bad day. Hats off to Morris for the 5th OA! Way to represent BT. And a huge Congrats to everyone else who either just made the cut-off or had a 'day of it' out there!! It was a lot of fun sharing this year-long journey with everyone on this thread. |

Member 14 Centerville, OH | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Congrats to all the Finishers!!! To the "bad dayers", yes, there is an Ironman waiting for the next chance to emerge...... Highlights of my day: The sincere apology from the guy to my right as we went back into the water for the second loop. He and I had crashed, bashed, and bumped for at least 500 yds. Triathletes really are nice folk. Scenery - like we needed any more oxygen debt, but the views were breathtaking. Signage - if a motivational poster gets a reaction from you good or bad, it's a great poster. Pet Therapy - my run was a walk (more on that later) so I asked spectators along the run course if I could pet their dogs. Large breeds are God's finest creatures, as you know, dog spelled backwards... Lowlights of my day: Not getting to swim on the "golden runway". I couldn't take any more crashing, bashing and bumping from anyone so went wide right on the second loop. I am a FOP swimmer (59:17) and a BOP biker (7:44) so I was passed by over 1700 participents. It's humbling and sometimes downright aggravating. Something between my ears just does not allow me to "power" on the bike. If you saw the "swimmer on board" sign, that was me trying to throw some humor into my and 1700+ other folk's day. Next time I think I'll try to get a sponsorship and use my lower back as a billboard. Devasting run ending pain in my right hip from out of nowhere. Walking a marathon is harder than it sounds. If it makes you feel any better, I never saw your sign - because both your swim AND bike splits were faster than mine (I'm a runner). |

Extreme Veteran 828 North Shore, MA. | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread There were defininately some good signs out there. Strangely though, i was most amused by the one on the run course that read ..... 'Please be careful, Brian. Love mom' I kept thinking how 'Brian' might run past it and turn his bib around or roll his eyes. (oh muuuhum) It just had me cracking up. |

Master 1655 NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I loved your swimmer on board sign also. I wanted to ask your time but had no extra energy or breath to actaully speak. Great work! The "Be careful Brian" sign on River Road was hysterical. Only a mom...I loved the redneck aid station and all their signs too. The people right before/after the run turnaround by the SN bags were rockin all day. Loved their energy and vibe. Did anyone else see the guy who was unconcious on the swim right after the start? People were holding him up and screaming for assistance. I heard various stories @ the outcome but don't know anything for certain. Doug, sorry your day ended the way it did. The other guy in the boat with you was a guy who trained w/ our group and it just wasn't his day either. 5x IM finisher but just couldn't get over the panic. Hang in there and you'll make your IM dream come true! |

Extreme Veteran 422 Somewhere, British Columbia | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I'm also looking for news about what happened in the swim. I was on the right side of the pack but at some point, I was feeling that something was wrong and stoped. Everybody was screaming for help, raising arms and I started to freak out... After a little while, I realized I couldn't help from where I was and re-start swimming and try to focus on my own race but felt very awkward during 5-10 minutes... I really hope this person is ok. |

Veteran 945 South Windsor, CT | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Hi all. Glad that everyone is holding up ok, for the most part. Doug-get checked out and get well. Doctor's orders. I was just behind the guy who was down in the water. We all stopped and waved for the kayak to get over. I heard that no one died and that the one 'serious' injury in the swim was a kick in the nose/broken nose. I did not know he was passed out/unconscious. I tried to swim over to see if I could help but knew I coulnd't do anything from the water so I just swam on after we all started again. Finishing my race report now, and will edit it with the pictures I took. Kept a camera with me for the entire bike but forgot it on the run. It was waterproof and I was going to go to the swim start during warmup and take some pics, but that long walk down Mirror lake drive to drop off the special needs bag nixed that idea... The long course is, well, long...I think I may do a sprint tri, haven't completed one of those yet. Or an oly-haven't done that yet, either... Many thanks to all contributors to this thread. It was sustaining through the dark times of training and I feel as if I've made many friends that I've yet to meet, IRL. Dale |

Expert 908 Niskayuna, New York | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread First IM, 12:38:21 for me. 1:09:03 (11:17) 6:47:12 (7:57) 4:22:52 splits. Finished in daylight which was all I was hoping for. Congratulations everyone, and sorry for those who didn't have the day they wanted, looking forward to when you do! Cornick.. wow. Did not know you were planning on toeing the line so seeing you on the run course was as shocking as it was inspirational. I was too stunned to say "Hi" but you may have noticed the dropped jaw. Loved the 'Swimmer on board' sign. Speaking of signs, the race course had me cracking up all day. My favorite was probably the "We're drunk!" sign towards the end of the climb around 11:30am. Everyone seems to have been in pain up those late climbs on the bike, but am I the only one who found the 2nd out and back on Route 9 to be oddly brutal? What a day, going to have to get to work on my race report. Had some major gas issues all through the bike after that swim/rugby match. Nutrition was an issue as it was very difficult to take in food. Only urinated once all day, after the run turn around. Never thought running (plus aid station walking) 10-11 minute miles could be so hard. Finished very dehydrated and hyponatremic, but avoided the med tent due to a severe case of stubbornness. Took awhile but felt okay after eating and drinking a ton. SOOOO glad I stuck around until midnight, those last 15 minutes or so were crazy emotional/inspirational. Count me in for next year! Regular 847 Akron | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Cornick! What a bad arse! Before the race I was telling my friend about how Cornick crashed and couldn't race, then we saw him volunteering at the check in. I thought that was awesome of him. Somewhere out on the race there was even a wooden sign (maybe for a business or something) that said Cornick and it made me think of him. Anyhow I was on my 2nd loop and here he comes in a sling. I yelled his name and we high fived! I thought it was awesome that he was "helping" someone through the run portion. I had no idea that he was competing! I thought he sneeked in and was doing part of the run. With about 15 minutes left he crosses the line jumping up in the air. I about crapped my pants. I told my friend there was no way he did the swim and bike so I looked him up and sure enough he did. Wow, he is truly my hero! You GO BOYEEEE! What an inspiration! I have been telling everyone back home! |

I was the shortie with pink hair! I saw you come into the gear bag area nearly in tears and I was worried for a second. It was at that point when we were at risk of saying the wrong thing as we tried to move you all through with some enthusiasm. Then we figured out you were so happy to have made it and ready to run. We could tell the "runners" who were ready to get out there and you were definitely on that list. Great race! |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Hey folks - just getting caught up after a few days of planes, trains and automobiles. We have just made it to Northern Michigan for a week of official post-IMLP vacation. I am looking forward to getting some laundry done and sitting by the water and reading everyone's race reports and getting caught up. I'll be working on mine over the next couple of days, but i think it will be pretty boring - the day was seemed pretty routine from beginning to end for me, which is a good thing i suppose. The short report is that our whole crew had a really good day on Sunday. I went 11:20:47 with which I was thrilled. The swim was spot-on where I thought I should be based on my training, and the bike was only 5 minutes slower than expected. My power meter was whacked from the get-go but once i figured that out i just ignored it just switched off the power data fields awatkins by RPE with an occasional glance at HR. The run was my unknown due to the lack of running this summer, but I just took it out pretty easy on the first loop and a half. I was really happy to not have any problems with my knee - my only real limiter on the run was my feet got very tired very fast - I felt like I had to run "gingerly" to make the distance. So I didn't have the run I had planned for back in December when I put together my goals, but I had the run I was trained to do, which gives me some confidence in my plan for next year. It was really great to meet everyone - and congratulations to everyone whether you had the day you planned for or not - just getting to the start line is a huge accomplishment. We are signed up for next year, but right now I am really looking forward to getting on my road bike for some real long distance riding and letting this knee finally get back to 100%. I haven't been able to get through all of the results, but from the ones i have seen here were some really fantastic performances out there, folks - Chantell, 12:10 is flat-out killing it for your first IM, and JDMorris pretty much destroyed the field with a really incredible performance. I think Erin just getting out on the swim (and turning a pretty sweet time to boot, pun intended) is fantastic. But I too will toss my vote to Jeff - dude you are one BAMF! It was great to see you come in just before midnight. |

Veteran 208 Canton, CT | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Congratulations to everyone that started and everyone that finished the race. It was never an asssumption of mine that I would be healthy enough to start. Training was a (pardon my French). Highlights for me are easy. They will never, ever be forgotten. 1) Entering the water with "Who Are You" rocking over the speakers and the crowd going absolutely nuts. It was completely overwhelming. 2) The last climb up (Moma Bear?) before Northwoods Rd. Climbing through the thick crowd of people cheering felt like a mountain stage at TDF. Unbelievable feeling. 3) Hugging my wife at mile 13 of the run and not letting go. Telling her I couldnt make it, her crying, my daughter, etc. Telling myself I have 2 miles of downhill next and to try it before stopping. 4) Finishing in the Olympic oval with the crowd going nuts. Rock star status - all day. 5) Most importantly: The volunteers. They were simply the best I have ever witnessed in 20 years of races. Every single one of them smiled, laughed, provided anything you needed and were inspirational. I cant articulate how much it meant at times. No low points for me. I had a bad race day for several reasons, some of them personal, but I finished so Im not complaining. It was the hardest yet most rewarding day in my life since my daughter was born. Got to run several of the hardest miles ever (18 -24) with Andy and we needed each others help. Saw Cornick finish at 11:45 and was sooooo happy for him. Just great and hope he is okay. My wife and I are going to volunteer next year as a return thank you to all of those that helped me through this year. So Ill be somewhere for those of you returning and will be cheering you like crazy. Cheers to everyone. |

My recommendation based on absolutely no personal experience of working with this type of volume is to work from the ends. That is, put a plan together with your normal taper preceding the race. So, if it is a three week taper, work back into August from September 9. Then, starting next week which should be the first week you do anything more than spin around for 30 minutes or so, pick a point from your last training cycle approximately 3-4 weeks pre-taper, decrease the total volume by 10-20 percent from what you were doing at that point in June and start building up again. There are some good articles out there for free on the Internets about how to put a double peaked plan together. Oh, and RE: Crazy. You may or may not be crazy to think this way. But, you are crazy to be on this forum hanging out with all of us. |
