badgerintx - 2010-06-03 12:35 PM Start Rant!

Training plan has me starting my Taper today for my next race........first taper of this year, so it made me curious enough to ask:

Who else hates Taper days?   Yell

I always feel like I am not doing anything productive except short and slow workouts!  I know taper is very important, maybe more than training sometimes and always follow my taper to the letter, etc. but just wondering who else is so addicted to training that you hate these days?

Rant over!

that's really nice of you to post his for julia.  looks like she has some sluggish legs but she'll be fine.

Yep, I pretty much feel like I'm forgetting how to run. Fortunately, my taper is almost over. Then I just have to run a whole bunch and then comes recovery week. Talk about feeling like you aren't doing anything!!

I used to hate tapering quite a bit, especially when all I did was run.  Now I don't mind that week too much.  I usually schedule a bunch of stuff to keep me busy-clean the house, mani/pedi, etc.  And as long as the intensity remains high on the workouts I have, I'm pretty much ok.   Of course, I haven't had any A races in a long time so haven't tapered since last September.  Ask me again mid season and I might join the pity party.

PS Trevor, Sam and I only exchanged phone numbers with those people, not actual names

Whats up, uggh this past week and a half has been brutal. I did get my first on the road run in this week and did the 14 mins and made it a little over a mile. Foot feels pretty awesome, getting some shin splints which is somewhat normal until I get some miles in. I was considering those compressions sleeves but just am not sure if they would help. I am still waiting for my new bike pedals, shoes, shorts etc. The next three saturdays are shot for me due to graduation parties and then Kings Island. I am going running when I get home tonight as I will be more then stressed. I have a midterm in less than an hour that I am freaking out about.

I am stoked for my sprint saturday! It is a pool swim, and Linda (who is a very fast swimmer) is number 10. I am listed as #41. Last year I was 37th in the swim so this seems right. But what is great is that I am the last swimmer to go before the first 1 minute break! In 300 yards, no one should come up behind me if they have to wait 1 minute. This helps me relax a bit.

Here is hoping the the race occurs in a window between rain and humidity!

Awwww man, bummer that you're feeling sucky. Sometimes I think my body does better when it's tired -- seriously!! I have very vivid memories of doing a huge set of something like 8x1000 at winter training camp for swimming, doing it mid-week of killer workouts, and my last one I swam faster than I had raced it yet that season. Go figure!! Then again I was only 20 years old, so maybe 20-year-olds just never get tired, LOL!

My workouts drop off dramatically next week and I'm already second-guessing every last thing. I have friends still doing one more long ride or run and I keep thinking "Maybe I should make mine longer?!" Then I ran into a CDA friend today using the same coach/plan (tailored to her) and she reminded me that we were doing bigger volumes earlier on than a lot of other athletes. So there is truth to that. I'm playing mind games of thinking I'm going to gain more fitness/endurance if I do longer workouts just one more time. Must stop it.

And I'm afraid of gaining weight!! I've lost a few pounds doing the IM work, like my base is about 2-3 pounds lighter, but have not been trying to lose weight and pretty much eat whatever I want but try to load up post-long workouts. I hope my appetite drops off accordingly.

Like Suzy, I'm going to try to schedule myself busy so I don't have fritter-away time. And my kids get out of school in 1.5 more weeks, so that will be a major time suck for me, LOL!

JULIA: Have a safe trip and a wonderful race!!! I'm really, really excited for you on this one!! GO GO GO!!!!!! Just don't go out too fast, OK?! Much better to have something to give at the end, IMO.

one of my goals for augusta is to make all of my weekday workouts before the kiddos get up and/or after they go down.  i don't mind running in the dark, been doing that for a while now.  but riding in the dark is obviously a no go around here. ha, daylight most places to.  so I set out to find a 1-2 mile stretch where i could run intervals or something for an hour - hour and a half once a week with little to no traffic.  not easy here in houston.  forget anything longer than that.  especially from 7:30 - 8:45 (pm)...still rush hour.

well, I found an area and went tonight.   obviously sooooo much more fun and interesting than the trainer!!!!  anyways, I'm pretty excited about this find.  hopefully I can get something out of this.  i obviously need help here. :-)  i know it'll only last for summer hours but at least its something.  and best of all, it appears it will not interfere with the family!!!  ROCK ON!!!!

edit.  oh weekends.  nothing i can do about the weekend long ride but but be ready to go as soon as its safe.   long runs, up early enough to get out and back by 8 am.  or < 75 minute run, do it during nap time.  but i love nap time on the weekends so probably not.  i either pile in be with jack and june then jarrett will come in an hour later and they are playing while i'm out cold.  or we put them down and just enjoy the silence.

John, I agree.  Running in the dark is no big deal, I even like it.  Riding though.. I cant' do it, just don't feel safe.  But being outside is much better than a trainer.  Glad you found a spot for now!

Once a week if I have been riding outside, if inside goes much longer.

To clean just put your bike in the trainer and get a rag and pedal while holding the chain.

See this video http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1662

I don't do the de-grease stuff since I clean it somewhat regularly, if you haven't done it in awhile probably needs it.

As far as replacing the chain I do it once a year.  I highly recommend getting a wipperman link, it allows you to take your chain apart whenever you need to.  They are something like 10 bucks or so.

Oh nap times....that is one thing I miss about those days.  Now I am always in bed before both my kids, and usually asleep.  Wink

Do you have access to a gym?  I have found that a good spin class for an hour can fill in very nicely for a bike workout.  I still do one class a week even during the summer due to work hours, kids schedules, family crap, daylight hours, etc.  it is a little more social than the "drainer" and because you have to pre-register (at least at my gym) I know that I won't miss that workout for any reason.  It is nice to be done with my daily ride by 6 am.  Just another option.

A Tony I am not. I clean my chain about once every 3/4 weeks and I have never changed the chain. then again I have a bike that was made when quality was job one

Sorry Red, but Tony is right on this one. This has been true for decades regardless of when your bike was made or who made it. If you ride it regularly you should replace the chain about once a year. Chains stretch and get worn. Remember it is the main means for transfering all those Watts you are generating.

Dura-Ace Chain, I normally get them from Probikekit.com but they seem to be out of them at the moment. This place has them for a similar price

While your at it have you changed your cables and housing?  Should do that every year or so also, will help you shift/brake much easier if you change them often.

If you go to the LBS they'll be quite a bit more and you'll probably end up getting an ultegra chain, thats what I had to do last time, as the DA ones were over 50 bucks.

Again if you think about it pick up a wipperman link.

Never realized how nice it was every so often to take the chain off my bike, which would be impossible normally.

i changed mine a month prior to LS.  but now my front brake is screwed up. when i hit the brake it works but won't open back up. so i have to reach down and open it by hand.  and the cable seems to be stuck in the lever that opens up the brake to make the wheel come off easier.  i'll post vid this weekend to show you bike peeps what i'm talking about.

FWIW: Every two or thee years you should consider replacing your freewheel as well as the gears wear down as well.
