Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Goosedog - 2013-04-16 9:45 AM It's been awhile since checking in, but I'm freaking gutted. Good friend and her husband injured right at the finish line cheering on her Mom. She's a sweet, sweet person, triathlon coach, KQ'er and personal trainer. Her husband is a former fire fighter and manager of an athletic club. Both former D1 swimmers. As you can imagine, our local running community sprang pretty quickly to try to get a head count on everyone. I swear I thought everyone was accounted for, including her and her husband specifically. Unfortunately, I came across a picture of her on FB, sitting down, covered in blood, leg injuries, clearly in shock at pretty much ground zero. Literally gasped. My kids were sitting right there (didn't see the picture), but god knows what sort of profanity they've picked up now. The picture has been running in some of the galleries for major news outlets. Luckily, her husband is relatively ok with burns and lacerations. She has compound fractures in both legs and in going in to her second surgery today. Her sister was also with them and I've heard she had a partial leg amputation, but she's at another hospital so details are slow coming. I heard last night that they expected my friend to make a rough, but full recovery. But, that was before I heard about the second surgery. They weren't coming over for dinner friends, but I've know her for years and my wife and I both have taken several swimming clinics/lessons with her. Really, really sh*tty day. Hope everyone is getting better news from their friends and family. Our neighborhood running race this weekend is trying to figure out a way for people to apply their race entries to some sort of fund for them. Hopefully we'll have enough time to figure this out. Thanks for opportunity to unload that.
I am so sorry for them, and for your friends and family. |

{MELON PRESS} I wish I could do any more than pray. I hope some partial funding works out from the race. If there's any way to send cards to her and her sister, I'd like to know, too. Thanks. |

I built it through Project One so I got to personalize everything (notice the pink cable housing and wheels decals). I am so blessed to be part of our local Trek team now and got a great deal on this bike. There's no way I would ever have dreamed that I'd have a bike like this! I really don't feel worthy. I went all out and got Dura Ace and Carbon wheels. I hope to have it early-mid May. Wonderful. You are definitely worthy. I am in awe of your dedication to cycling. You say "I went out for an 80 mile ride this morning" like most of us say we went out and ran a 5k. I love your new bike! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The news from Boston is so shocking and sad. While I don't have any immediate friends or family in the area, my heart aches for all those who have been directly impacted. Marshall, I truly hope your friends make speedy recoveries and are able to get back to doing what they love. In honor of Boston and this tragedy, I wore a race shirt to work today. I'd love to get out for a run this afternoon, but a walk will have to suffice. I am truly saddened by this, but I'm with everyone who refuses to let "them" (whoevery they might be) win. |

![]() riorio - 2013-04-16 3:02 AM Fred D - 2013-04-16 4:30 AM Glad our BT folks are ok. I am finally recovering from my cycling this weekend. I REALLY enjoyed the riding in a roadie format and am debating switching to just cycling for the rest of the summer after IMMT 70.3. Anyone have any input for me in regards to: 1. How to approach it. 2. Good books to read on the topic. I know Jason did this last year and I'm just looking for something a bit different this year. Thoughts?
I like Carmichael....I have read some of his stuff and also signed up for his weekly emails. As with Tri, I never follow any sort of training plan, just do what works for me. I guess it depends on your goals Fred. Are you just planning to ride focus to become a stronger cyclist and take that back to Triathlon or are you thinking of bike racing? I also pick the brains of my fellow cyclists. I ask them how they train, how many miles they put in etc. One thing I do notice is that they tend to worry a lot less about overall pace per ride than my tri buddies do. They do a lot of "easy" riding with hard efforts thrown in. I also have learned a ton about tactics during group rides. Our weekly ride is pretty competitive and when you get some teams out there, there is a lot of strategy involved! Don't really know any good books. But along the lines of Sally...I just rode my bike a lot and didn't stress too much over the details. There was really only one day where I was doing a structured workout...and that was riding solo doing hill repeats. The rest of the days were group rides with roadies, and a couple of days where I just rode on my own and pushed it where I felt like it. If you ride often enough, you're going to need a couple of days a week where you can't go hard the whole ride, but I always like to throw in a few short hills here and there. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sally - GREAT bike. I don't want my wife to see it, or we'll start adding to the collection! Salty - nice to meet you and congrats on the race. Very well done, indeed. Marshall, literally hard to even type anything about this. We were lucky not to be there and not have friends that were injured (can't tell you how many times I've been right there - mostly cheering, a couple times running - and that's right where we'd have gone with the kids yesterday if we hadn't been doing the Patriot's Day thing in town). So sorry about your friend and all the others so needlessly hurt. All I could think to do was run this morning... mostly for Boston, partly for me. Still not sure why, but it helped. Somewhere between continually choked up and PO'd. Would love to BQ for next year (and Kim is mulling that one, too). As for the AP/NP/VI discussion, very helpful and definitely mirrors what my legs have told me this past year! SO different riding with my roadie friends. Definitely FUN to hammer segments/hills/town lines, but reeeeeaaaaalllllly hard to hit my track workout the next day! I do think riding with them makes you a better rider, even if it's almost "cross training" compared to tri-riding. OK, gotta pop off here. Matt |

I changed up a few things from standard bike...Standard crack, 53/39 Chain ring, 11x25 cassette, Ceramic bearings....smaller handle bars. I am sooo excited! I ride with the guys from my LBS a lot, so it was easy for them to help me decide which components/sizes to get....they know how I ride. |

![]() We have a few standard rides in the area, the "Donut Ride" being the biggest. Every neighborhood has their own version of a donut ride. Totally intimidated by them, been wanting to jump in and try my hand, see where I stack up, but I did a memorial ride with a lot of them, and frankly, they can be a bit scary. Passing on the right in the gutter, riding in real close quarters.... I suppose this has more to do with my handling than anything else, my handling is OK but not like a solid roadie. |

Thanks, and thank you to everyone for your well wishes. It has helped. Sorry to be a downer one more time, but I just posted this in TT. Thanks. ___________________ Folks, thanks to everyone for their well wishes for my friend injured in Boston. It has truly helped me sort through this. I'm sure there are more of you that might know someone that was hurt. I wanted to provide an opportunity, for those of you that have asked, to send your well wishes directly to my friend. Also, please feel free to list mailing addresses for other people injured so we can show them the BT love. However, please exercise discretion before listing someone's home or hospital address. My friend is Nicole. She's had two surgeries so far and has two breaks in a leg, a broken ankle, soft tissue damage and a severed Achilles. You may of seen the picture of her with red sleeves, sitting awkwardly, covered in blood essentially at ground zero of the blast. It could have easily been worse. Her sister, Erika, was also severely injured and had a partial leg amputation. Nicole swam D1 at an SEC school. She is a personal trainer, triathlon coach and swim instructor. She is an avid runner and previously qualified for Kona. She loves dogs. Most importantly, she is one of the sweetest people I know and never holds back a smile. If you are so inclined, please drop her a note at the address below. Thank you. Coach Nicolec/o Charlotte Athletic Club101 S. Tryon StreetCharlotte, North Carolina 28280 |
