I'm about 20 min. from SeaTac... so I'd love to see you, too! No plans to head up to IM CA for me this year, but never say never... There is a good chance I'll be in Hawaii just before IM CA, but the kids start school on 8/30, so I'd likely be home by 8/28 or 8/29 and might be able to see you on the way back (I assume you're flying home out of Seattle too?). Fun! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, I finally committed to a set of events for 2010. I signed up for the Tri-Texas Race Series today. This starts with an event on 4/10 (Gateway to the Bay - Sprint) and then the Bridgeland Tri (Sprint) on 8/08, then the Houston Tri (an Olympic distance!) on 9/26. I think I signed up in time to get some free gear just for signing up for the full series. There, I did it, I committed to doing an Olympic distance in 2010.....now, what the heck have I got myself into now....I suspect I need to switch over to an Olympic training plan sometime soon. I am feeling like I have jumped off the proverbial cliff at the moment....but excited about the possibilities. Anyway, any advice/suggestions etc on switching from training for sprint distances to olympic distances is appreciated. Thanks. |

I have yet to register for an Oly for '10, I am debating just doing the 1/3 Iron distance race as opposed to an Oly just for the distance. My biggest issue this year is that I have been driving forward to get faster at sprints and set some pretty aggressive goals for some of my races. First tri I did, looking to shave 20 minutes from a 1:35 to a 1:15. One of my last tris of the season last year was a sprint and carrying forward the similar improvements would put me very competitive in that race from what I saw on results last year. I just need to take the plunge and register for a longer distance, one that I do not 'care' as much about placing or results just to get the distance under my belt. One of these days ![]() |

Anyway, any advice/suggestions etc on switching from training for sprint distances to olympic distances is appreciated. Thanks. First of all, GOOD FOR YOU for stepping up your game, and trying on Oly. That is wonderful. Second, while others have significantly more experience than I--and therefore take my opinion as that of the junior knucklehead that I am--I think you are going to be able to build into the Oly very easily from looking at your logs. Swim: You already appear to swim 1500m often as a workout, so a) you can do that leg already even before getting into an Oly specific training plan, and b) you psychologically know you can do that leg, which I feel is often one of the real hurdles for the swim leg. Bike: You are likely going to increase your bike training. I think the math is that the bike turns out to be between 40 and 50 percent of the race. While on a sprint I think that even if you do not like the bike, you can force your way through the bike piece on a mind-over-matter basis. I think there is a real difference between 12 and 25 miles for the bike, and it is much more difficult to ignore the importance of training on the bike. When getting ready for an Oly, you and your bike are going to get to know one another much more intimately. Run: Keep up the good work you are already showing in your logs, and follow the Oly training plan you will be adopting. So long as you are not setting your heart on a podium finish, the step up is fun. And again, good for you for taking the plunge. My $0.02. -William |

That's a super deal. 3 races and an LG tri kit for that price. Sweet! Andy and I will see you at Gateway. Bridgelands is a few miles from the house. To bad Augusta and Houston are the same day. Good luck this weekend!!! Congrats again! |

Good luck this weekend!!! Congrats again! What these guys said ^^^^^ Last year was my 1st season. I noticed a big different on the run. Not bring much of a runner, that was the biggest change for me. Being prepared for the run is/was a big part of it. You can't hammer the bike as hard in an Oly. 10k on fatigued legs is a lot harder to do than 5k. You'll be fine though....After all an Oly will only take ~~2:30- 3 hours right? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did it! I ran in my first race, and wasn't even nervous ![]() My time: 43:20 - 14th in my age class. I think there were only 20 in my age class. LOL! I'm not complaining, as this is about 1.5 minutes faster than Thursday's 5K practice run. It was cold, rainy, foggy, and I'm never up at 6:30 am, much less racing at 8 am. My heart kind of sank when a dude pushing one of those run strollers passed me, then a couple of 60+ y/o people passed, but then I looked behind me and saw a buttload of people so I didn't feel so bad. Kept a steady pace throughout the race - although my HR was high the entire time. That was fun! |
