Definitely going to take some getting used to, very different from my Tri bike! I hit a few short hills though, and wow! what a difference! I feel so lucky! I also got a Garmin edge to use on both bikes. I've never had anything so techy before, kind of cool to see my average speed etc while I am riding, as opposed to waiting to get home to find out. Awesome!! Enjoy your new toy |

Next time make her use one of these. http://swimshop.swimmingworldmagazine.com/p/431/strechcordz-drag-belt-parachute I LOVE the bucket idea - especially for races! Just think about it - once you are done with the swim you could reel it in and then run with it full of water to T1 - then you could stand in it to wash your feet off and flip it over to sit on while you towel off your feet, apply body glide, sunscreen, put on your socks and shoes, etc, etc. that is soooooo much more efficient than the way I usually do it. If it is a big enough bucket you could even carry all of your transition gear to and from the race in it. It really is brilliantly versatile. As someone that doesn't come from an organized swim background, I love watching how the collegiate kids train with resistance. While I am on sabbatical I am doing masters at Emory University and they use Power Towers. At Auburn they use racks which seem less versatile but are much more dramatic just because of the racket they make when the big dogs are using them. A number of years ago I had opportunity to watch Cesar Cielo doing sprints and pull outs on the racks - I swear I thought he was going to yank them over and off the deck and into the pool.... |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN brigby1 - 2013-04-25 7:05 PM Had a ride tonight that showed some encouraging signs and may also exhibit some of the frustration I've had over the winter. Rode to A Very Dark Place, 5 x 4' intervals with ~3:30 recoveries. Ended up hitting 345, 346, 350, 355 and 380. None of them were really *that* hard, even the last one, but if I had tried to start out at 355-360 I likely would have blown up right away, no recovery could salvage any of the rest, and have done so a number of times. I haven't done one near 380 in awhile (let alone all 5), which is encouraging, but it also shows the frustration as figuring out how to pace and determine effort levels for workouts (and very quickly upcoming races) difficult. I miss by a few watts and I'm done for the day. Hopefully I'm learning how to work these better and can keep getting it back, and then keep on building from there. Even with improved swim & run, it doesn't really help going into the first race when my strength (the bike) is still questionable. Might seem strange, but making sure the running is going well helps with a LOT of things, and not just in running. On top of that, running more hills, and running them hard helps out at least 90% of things quite a bit. Is it really a coincidence I had this jump on the bike (and other areas) after running threshold intervals on hills a couple times a week the past few weeks? Nice. I did something similar last Friday, 3:00 intervals with 2:00 recovery, starting at 345 and increasing 5W each one, to 365. I can't imagine 380.... my legs were jelly. This morning I couldn't get past 345 I do wonder though if it's "easier" to do these on the CT in erg mode, as I have been, since it does not require any mental effort to keep the watts there. All I have to do is pedal. One of these days I am going to try it in [the other] mode to see how different it is....... Edited by ChrisM 2013-04-26 11:56 AM |

There is an interesting test you can do with a CT which will give you an estimate of your FTP. Some say it's "as accurate" as a 20' test. You ramp your power, slowly until failure. You take the average of the last full minute and 72-75% of that is your FTP. It's almost impossible to do with a CT. You need to hold the power very constant. I personally find it more palatable than the 20' test. Let me know if you want details |

Then to show how confounding this has been, I actually went for a run afterward. Easy felt easy and pace was where I expected it to be. Last year, making 9:00/mi was a huge struggle post this workout and I'd kind of hope something would strike me down. Haven't used anything like Erg mode before. I'd guess it'd be different, but not necessarily easier. Not noticeably anyway. Much of the mental part goes into driving yourself so hard. It's only a small part that focuses on controlling that effort a bit more. The erg certainly could help out in hitting targets since you ARE going to hit it. And just riding would likely develop feel some more. And this type of workout just might be a definitive one for "It doesn't get easier, you just get faster". You can actually learn to appreciate it more when the numbers go up, so I would both dread and look forward to it simultaneously. For now I'm trying to go with the positive of cracking 380 again, even if it was just once. |
