And I know what you mean about the kid weight.  Although I lost actual pounds having kids, the weight I was left with got re-portioned and won't budge from my middle.  So you had big babies?  Can you top 9 lbs. 14 oz.

awwww.   that's such a cute little baby.  jack was 10 6

I'm suprised your wife still speaks to you!

You go girl!!!  Mine were  9lbs 10oz and 9lbs 5 oz, both vaginally and the first one without an epidural.  (not by choice, the damn thing didn't work on me Yell).  Keep in mind I weighed 125 pre-pregnancy and tipped the scales at 175 at the time of birth - all baby and fluid weight.  Needless to say my body did a bit or redistributing of skin and hip bones to accomodate the girls.

Oh I am loving these conversations! Frown

Can't we start a different thread about vagina's and body redistributing somewhere else?

Oh come on. We we talking about tingling butt cream a few posts ago.  Don't be so squeemish.  And you guys think you know what it is like to push through the pain out on the course,  ha!  Back me up Sam, they don't know what pain is right?  That is why women are much better athletes then men. Wink Kiss  Now if it were a pimple inside the nose, that would be different.

I do love how squeamish men get.  Tony manned up and went to every doc appt. and was there for one birth and almost made it through the first one before he got white and had to leave.  But now I can't even say the baby doc word around him.  He'll put his fingers in his ears and say "I'm not listening, I'm not listening..."

And Tracy, you deserve a medal - I can't even imagine!  My kids let me suffer through labor (all day) w/o epidurals only to then go under the knife.

Hello all, back from the land of corn and the rendering plant breeze that is just wonderful in the afternoon...

Yes Sam I am using your laptop and logged you out of BT...

You ladies are gross...

Anyone else read "A dog in a hat" by Joe Parkin?

It a story about an american that goes to Belgium to race in the mid 80's.  Interesting stuff, I picked it up to read before my trip.

Has anyone else heard of calories cycling?  Apparently it is about varying your caloric intake from day to day to help break out of a plateau.  I know that for the most part, I eat close to the same number of calories per day.  The way it works is to calculate your desired calories per week based on exercise, metabolic rate, and desired calorie deficit- say 14000 for example.  Instead of eating 2k per day, you alternate up and down between 1700 and 2300 or so like - 1700, 1900, 2100, 2300, 1900, 1800, 2200 or the like.  I am guessing that it helps prevent metabolic adaption to a specific calorie level similar to mixing up LSD, tempo, and speed work for workouts.  What's the MG-think on this?

In theory it sounds good.  The human body does seem to be too darn good at adapting.

But that also sounds like a lot of work and very scheduled eating.

Suzy, you're 3% over race weight?  What's that?  1.25 lbs
3% for me would be as big as some of these babies we're talking about.

I'm with you Reub. I feel for Suzy and anyone else with a sensitive digestion. As long as there are no Cashew Nuts or corn in my food I can handle it. Warm, cold, does not matter.

I did WW before starting triathlon. I did a lot of exercise while I did it. My top three tips: 1) write down everything you eat to get a handle on how much you eat, 2) portion control, and 3) eat filling foods like fuit and veggies first. I reached my goal and then started training for this. I now think I would like to lose some more. (20+ lbs.) So now I am going to try and do the training and the weight loss at the same time.

My family doc and I have discussed...even the doc says totally unrealistic.  He's been my doc since birth too.
What's shocking is I'm within 30 lbs currently.  My all time high was 100 lbs above ideal (I was 330 at one point in college - how much beer did I drink).

I always get that comment.  3% is 3lbs, but remember I am 4'10".  3lbs on that frame is the difference between being comfortable in my pants and having that "I need to find my fat pants" feeling.  I have weighed as much as 108lbs and that is a lot on my frame.  I have done Jenny Craig, WW, Atkins, low fat, low calories, no eating after 8pm and the list goes on. I think of all the diets out there WW does the best job on teaching people how to eat for a lifetime.

I know when I cut out mindless snacking (e.g eating out of a box or bag), especially at the pc, I maintain or lose weight even when some of my choices are poor during my three or four main meals.  When I snack, I snort (oin, oink).  Just me.

BMI is Bull-cr@p Made-up Idiocy.  It does not account for many variables such as bone mass, body type, etc.  Not everyone is built long and lean - some of us have muscle on our bones (mind you I still have quite a bit of fat though).  I couldn't imagine myself at like 185 - I would look gaunt.  I tend to keep focusing on body fat% - although I think my body fat index scale is on drugs sometimes...

Would you rather revive John's conversation about putting his hands down his pants to rub his rear end?   I think JJs are equally interesting.

I also bet we will have some people stopping by reading our forum after the interview.  They probably want to know how we can fill 200+ pages!

lol! Same type of thing killed me about the Navy. I was always one of the bigger officers, tall and fit, not fat like now;-).  I'd always be in the top 10% on the annual physical readiness test BUT if your BMI was over a certain number you were tagged for extra PT.  I was always tagged.

Thats how much my left leg weighs!!!Cool

I do agree with you with WW though. I know alot of people that have been successful with that. Teaching you about good food choices etc. When we got married 5 years ago, I dropped over 25 lbs in less than 2 months doing Atkins. I gained it all back in probably the same amnount of time. Then packed on more after. There is something to be said about eating turkey beef jerkey sticks and cheese for breakfast!!! I couldn't imagaine not having carbs in my system as an active person. Can you fainting??

According to BMI most boxers are obese. It is much too simplified in that it does not ake body composition into account. Am I overweight still...yes. Am I obese ...no way. October was my last physical. I had great cholestrol levels, good BP and a terrific heart rate. We did not do a body fat measurement. I am looking forward to this years physical so I can compare my numbers. It should be a week after my olympic.

Hey Reub what size bike do you ride? Does it weigh as much as Suzy?

gadgetlaw - 2009-07-14 4:14 PM The tracking is showing that my wetsuit rental is sitting on my porch!  I'm excited to try it, but bummed that I have a bike scheduled for after work.  It is, however, my last long workout before my race next weekend - so I am glad about that!!  I just want to try the wetsuit on!!  And probably laugh at myself in the process!!  Any tips for getting it on?  I'll let you know how it goes!

Karen

zipper in the back

This is the best advice I've gotten.  Thanks for making me laugh!  Laughing   I did try the suit on last night.  After about 20 minutes of struggling, I got it on far enough to zip it (yes, up the back!!).  I started sweating and pretty much gave up!  How long should it take to put it on??  I clearly did not have it up far enough.  And, since we have been talking about crotches, I had a droopy crotch and droopy arm pits!  Oh, and since you already have that little piece of info, I may as well give you more info that you don't want to hear.  When I came downstairs in the suit my husband did kind of meow at me and told me I looked like a superhero...  Anyway,  I am going to try again tonight at the park.

I have lost about 135 pounds, with maybe 10 - 15 to go.  (That is what, almost 1 1/2 Suzy's?  Wow, when I think of it that way, it sounds crazy!)  I have no idea what my BMI is.  It doesn't matter to me - I feel great - I am 41 years old and in the best shape I have ever been - and that is what matters to me.  I never considered that I was on a 'diet'.   I changed the way I ate, but it was a permanent change, not something I did for a short period of time to lose weight.  Sometimes it is hard.  Sometimes I still want to eat the entire bag of potato chips.  Undecided  But I think about how it will affect my next ride or run.  And most times, I step away from the chips.  Wink  For me the biggest changes are portion size - I ate way too much before! Keeping track of what I eat - I do not always write down what I eat.  But if I was not losing weight or gained some, then I would keep track.  It is easy to eat a couple extra hundred calories without realizing it.  And I have incredible cravings at times.  I used to say no, you can't have that!  But now I just give in.  A little bit of chocolate, or something, is better than depriving myself and totally going crazy after a while.  I am also willing to try new foods that I never ate before.  Now beans and lentils and veggies are some of my favorite foods.  (I used to say the only good bean was a jelly bean!)  Try not to get discouraged, believe me I have been there!!

And Sam, I totally understand your frustration about guys losing weight easier.  My husband has lost probably 25-30 pounds since we've been married.  How did he do it?  Heck if I know.  He doesn't exercise.  Well, he does walk the dog.  He eats candy and chips.  The only thing different is how I cook as compared to how he ate before we got married.  I know that is a big difference, but come on!!  I sweat for hours a day, and he doesn't.  It can be incredibly hard to handle!  I am actually kinda jealous that you have a husband you can work out with if you want!!  Just keep at it.  You will succeed!

Karen

Quick bike question for you guys (yes, another oneLaughing) -

I was out on a ride over the weekend and had to make a choice.  I had come out of a parking lot and had the option of crossing a busy 5 lane highway to get to the correct side of the road, then riding about 1/2 mile down and crossing the same road again to get to where I needed to go to get home or riding on the wrong side for that 1/2 mile and not having to cross the busy street twice (there is a stoplight at one crossing but not the other and not one nearby that I could ride to in order to cross the road).  I chose to ride on the wrong side.  I know this is not the correct way to ride and for the rest of my ride I was on the correct side of the street, going with traffic.  This road has a 5' shoulder so it wasn't like I was near the traffic - I stayed as far over as possible and as far away from the cars as I could get.  I know that technically this wasn't right but felt it was a lot safer (especially since I'm a fairly new cyclist).  Next time I ride this route, how should I handle it?

Oh, and concerning the discussion on baby weight that I apparently missed - my kids were 10 lbs 1/2 oz, and 8 lbs 13 oz.  Apparently big babies run in my family - something my mother conveniently forgot to tell me!

Useless without pictures!!!Wink once you get it over the legs, you really need to hike it up over the stomach. Grab a fold of it over your belly, and pull it up.  Droopy crotch and armpits just means you didnt get it up far enough. And pull it up on the arms. There is probably alot of suit starting from the wrist up that you could get to loosen your shoulder. You should have normal range of motion there. Get the Hubby to help you the first few times. I can get mine on by myself now, but no way could i zip it!

HOLY COW THAT IS GREAT!!!  You are a superhero!!!  I think you and Trevor are right on about the portion sizes.  Its almost kind of gross when I compare how much I used to eat to what I eat now at dinner.

Wetsuit.  It'll take me 5 minutes.  If its warm out, most of the time down here, I sweat so it takes a bit longer and its a pain.  Droopy crotch and armpits in the wetsuit sounds kinda odd to me.
