kcarroll - 2013-05-05 9:08 PM Wow, impressive weekend of racing for this group. Congrats to all of the winners - overall and AG - and just plain fast and healthy finishers.
I was thinking the same thing. What a great weekend for everyone. You all are very inspiring. And motivating.

Conditions were just about as awesomely awful as they could be, but at least it did not start hailing until we were driving home. My wife just got nicked off the podium with a fourth place AG - that is a great performance for her as well.

It's always nice when the hail holds off until post race.  Nice job on the 2nd place.

ChrisM - 2013-05-05 3:50 PMWell, I didn't win anything. . But was able to run the 10k at wildflower, it was a very tough day but my kind of conditions. Yesterday was 100+. Today was hi 50s at my wave start, 20 mph and a severe wind warning. Very choppy swim. Bike was....interesting g with the cover and H3 front. Run was perfect, 60s and overcast. Run was just done very easy. Came in at 2:44.
Nice work Chris! When did you decide to do the run? (Maybe I missed it above somewhere). I'm thinking of maybe signing up for Wildflower next year. Maybe try my hand at a non WTC race? Lol.

tri808 - 2013-05-05 6:34 PMFinally cracked an hour at 40k.  Unofficial since I was racing solo when it was supposed to be a 4 man team TT, but finished in 58:14 on roughly 260 watts.  I felt really strong despite not tapering at all and running 14.5 miles yesterday.  Lots of little things played a factor that I'll write up on more later.  Definately learned a lot of valuable info from this "race."

Holy-Moly, Jason - what is in store for e actual championship? Think you can crack 58? Looking forward to the report. Hopefully all of those little things are within your control?

I'd be happy with a similar time given better recovery going into the race, but normal wind conditions.

I did an unofficial RR here that outlined some of the factors and lessons learned.

Just got back from my Triathlon...it went really well considering I was a bit rusty. I was 4th overall and 1st in my AG. I swam well, had the fastest bike split then got passed by 2 women on the run and just couldn't hang on to them.

The results are exactly what I would expect from my recent training. I actually ran a 22 min 5k which pleasantly surprised me, but it's hard to swallow when I used to be able to throw down a 20 min 5k off the bike

I might even do a race report...it's been a while!

Awesome!  Can't wait to read the RR

TankBoy - 2013-05-05 10:47 PM Hi all - thanks again for all the well-wishes. The rev3 folks were AWESOME and actually went way out of their way to make it so I could race. I went into this race aiming to win my age group, but just as I was going into the water with my wave I saw Bruce Genarri go in just in front of me. And just like that I was racing for second. If you don't know who Bruce is, you should; I think he raced pro for a while, but he is a former American champion and he has also placed either third or fourth at worlds. The first year he raced Kona was back when the pros and age groupers still started together he was the first overall out of the water. He is also a really nice guy. I had a great swim (for me) and hit the swim exit in 23:xx. It was a long run to the mats, but based on Bruce's mat time he had to be 15:xx to the waters edge. That is a gap that is tough to bridge in an Olympic distance race. I did wind up with a distant second. I know with age group racing it always depends on who shows up. But DANG! Wy did Bruce have to show up at this one?!?

Conditions were just about as awesomely awful as they could be, but at least it did not start hailing until we were driving home. My wife just got nicked off the podium with a fourth place AG - that is a great performance for her as well.

Awesome Rusty, I'm so glad they let you race and you did so well.  Too bad about the conditions but at least the hail held off like ou said.

Hey everyone, I will write more details later but I won my duathlon today - all the fasties were doing the super-sprint.

I ran a ton better than I ever have in a race before.  It wasn't quite 10k total but if it had been I would have been well under my open 10k PR with a 4:19/km pace.

What?!? You skipped an opportunity to show everyone who is boss on the swim??? Way to go on the duathlon - sounds like it is time to sign up for another 10k? I mean now that it is not snowing and all...

Ha, if there had been a swim to enter I would have been there.

We could have used the icebergs as turn buoys

I forgot about the Olympic I did last year.  I did the run in 42:07 after struggling the first couple of km with a stitch (course measured 10K according to my Garmin).  So I now realize I should lower that threshold pace.  Is the idea to basically have it match what you can do in an open 10K?

Does your swim pace in TP include the rest time, or strip it out?

Use McMillan to get a 15k equivalent, which is closer to 1 hr, which is threshold

The rest gets excluded by TP for swimming.

Thanks - made some adjustments.  Any idea if you can go back and get your previous workouts recalculated in anyway?

Melissa -  I had a PT appt last week and by that time the symptoms had resolved, but the diagnosis wasn't an exacerbation of the prior injury.  He cleared me to run, just not a lot of hills.   Thought about it and presented it to coach that I would make a game day decision but if I ran, run very easy, walk any steep hills, and be hyper aware and ready to pull the plug.  Run was actually great as all the pressure was off.  I just went really easy and kept it there and did walk the steep parts.  The Oly run course is staffed by a ton of Cal Poly students as volunteers so it's a party anyway, the less serious you take it the more fun it is.

Not a full blown report, but ran a HED3 and the disc cover.  Forecast said 20 mph winds from the SSW, garmin shows 13 mph, so a large difference.  But there were periods of gusts, and at the top of the small rises the wind was definitely over 15.  I think the disc made it more stable, but the H3 got pulled from underneath me a few times, without warning,. so I stayed ot of aero in areas where the wind was swirling.  The course is pretty much out and back N/S, so the wind was more quartering than tail or head, and a couple sections had a decent cross, and you had to lean a bit into the wind to go straight.  At 185 though I wasn't getting blown off the bike.

On the power front, honestly I was more interested in keeping control than looking at my wrist (should probably get a bar mount for the Garmin) but did the best I could.  It's a very hilly Oly course with several good climbs (including a monster right out of T1 that was fantastic with a compact!), and my cassette was acting up and I didn't have all my gears,   My target wattage was 255 and NP was 253 (ave 221), so I think it worked out well, whatever I did      And I was 115 OA on the swim and 115 OA on the bike, pretty pleased with that on a course like WF that (1) is hard and (2) has a talented field every year.  Did slip a little in AG rankings though

Holy smokes!  I take a couple days off over the weekend to reacquaint with the family and run a race and...

EVERYONE IS OUT THERE KILLING IT!

Congrats to all the racers (too many to recount, but great job and I'm learning from your experiences - so thanks, as well).

We did a local 5k as a family on Sunday.  PR'd over my recent PR (20:21 - I'm beginning to believe I can crack 20), 29/600 OA but 6th in the "how are all these old guys going so fast" 40-44 AG.  Kim PR'd again, too, and took 3rd in her AG!

Best part, all three kids set out to PR their mile races - and all three did!  Kim and I paced the younger two and our oldest just got after it on his own.  Awesome day!

Icing on the cake - rode home from the race and it was so nice I just kept extending.  Did a 25 miler feeling strong in the sun.

Some days your the bat, not the ball.  Tongue out

Matt

Awesome swim and bike placings Chris!  Too bad you couldn't give the run a full go too but  you were wise to just take it easy.  I saw a picture that you posted of a monster climb out of the water - that looked seriously hard!

Back on the trainer this morning for some intervals and then a 45 min run at lunch on the schedule.

I replaced the rim tape on my training wheel last night as that's what appears to have been the cause of my double flat last week.  Holy smokes that seems like it was a lot tougher than it should have been.  Maybe it was the kind I was using but getting it on properly without any twists and lined up properly with the valve hole was a bit of an ordeal.

Nice job to all in the group racing last weekend.  Nice results.  Hoping to find some time to read the reports.

I am racing a 10K this weekend.  First race in a long time it seems.  I have some pretty ambitious goals..kind of afraid to say them out loud.  Been doing alot more 15K and 5K pace intervals than ever before so interested to see how that plays out.

Hoping to fit in an Olympic tri before our second child arrives end of this month but that may not happen.  Be nice to actually see some results from all the winter training.

Nice going Rusty! I was there too, but only went through the motions. Wasn't sure I'd keep it under control well enough to not slip out in those conditions, so backed way off and just enjoyed being out there. Yeah, somehow that was enjoyable once we got going. If you saw the green run shoes, that was probably me. Or the dark green poncho walking around after.

Heck of a race that day. Going out on the bike, counted off 90 sec or so between seeing Cam Dye and the next rider, and don't forget that I was moving the other way!! He wanted this badly after 2 consecutive 2nds. On the run, I saw all the women heading back in. Lauren Goss was going to win or (literally) explode she was going so hard off the front. What's really amazing is that she did the 2nd half of the bike with no shifting. Be interesting to see more details in her write-up, but so far has posted that her Di2 cable broke on the turn-around. She was in the big ring and middle of a "25 cassette". For those not there, this means she still had to take the 2nd big climb and a few short steep things in that. I still need to check my speed overall on there, but there are places where going right at 10 mph was taking me 4-4.5 w/kg. Doing that several gears off the bottom is incredible! Rinny was blazing after Magali trying to get 3rd, but couldn't quite catch her.

The Pro Recap vid kind of captures conditions of the day. The camera is always wet because it was always raining. Colder than it looks when standing still, but not too bad when moving and with just a bit of protection. Water temp was officially 59 at the race briefing Sat, air temps in the high 50's all day. The run course was still really nice even though it was half underwater. They didn't pick one spot for all the puddle splashing on the greenway trails, it was like that everywhere. A little freaky seeing that creek come all the way up to the one bridge we had to cross, but they built it up really well.
