Expert 1260 Norton Shores, MI | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ~~~~ Permanently OPEN!! I raced a 15K this weekend. This was scheduled at the end of week 2 of a 3 week HIM build so not exactly good timing for a great race. That said, really pleased with how it went. It was 75 sunny and humid at 7:30am which I knew would slow things for everybody. My plan was still to start at 1 hour pace and try to drop it down. Their is 165 feet of climbing and it is all between miles 4-6. I ended up passing about 8 people from miles 5-8 to finish 6th Overall and 1st AG. Apparently I just did not slow down as much as everybody else. I was able to drop it right back down to 6:25 pace after the hills. Finished in 1:00:40. I will take it although really wanted that sub 60. On a swimming note - today the Main Set was 20x100 @1:30SI. I have tanked this every time it has been ordered up. Today I was able to nail it and surprisingly with not too much difficulty. Good confidence booster.

Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ~~~~ Permanently OPEN!! Thanks for all the support you guys have shown over the past couple years! I've learned so much from this group and really credit a lot of my improvements and race strategies to what I've learned here. I'm on a plane (short layover at the moment) on my way home. I've thought a lot about how the race went and I have a few questions I'd like to pose to the group when I have access to a computer -- one has to do with bike power and one has to do with hitting a wall at mile 11 on the run. I'll get my thoughts compiled tonight...but wanted to thank everyone for their help over the last couple years and warn you that I'll be asking more questions |

Completely flat for mine this past weekend, but good to see it balanced out with everyone else. Should I be doing something again in two weeks? |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ~~~~ Permanently OPEN!! Question for the group. Got the USAT AG nationals email this morning. Mind you, I used to do OK as a clyde in races, but when I lost the weight I transferred to a middle of the packer, but I've gotten a bit faster. Qualified at our local sprint last month. I know it's not Kona or Mt. Tremblant, but I've never actually qualified for anything athletically before, so it's a nice little ego boost. And wondering if I should take advantage of it.. from the west coast it would be an expensive oly between flight/hotel/car/TBT, as in over $1000. But I am all about the experiences this year, so maybe it's worth it? I'll get absolutely hammered by the fast guys but don't care much about that. Thoughts? What would you do? |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ~~~~ Permanently OPEN!! Chris - it would probably never be something doable for me given the logistics, but I think it's would be cool to race among the really fast folks. Just keep in mind that this isn't a once in a lifetime thing...I'm sure you could probably qualify every year so if finances or travel aren't working with the rest of your race schedule, you can always hold off on it. |

Chris, I'm going to 70.3 WC -- it's going to be an expensive (practically last minute) race and I'm probably going to be sitting BOP, but I'm still going for it. I think it'll be fun to see all the other strong competitors out there....and will give me an idea of where the bar is truly set. Plus, it'll be fun. If I were you, I'd take advantage of it. Sounded like a great race from the reports last year. |

Hey Chris - I decided to go this year simply because of all the fantastic reports from last year and the schedule works great for me for a change. With worlds in Chicago next year I think it will be very competitive and not many roll-downs, but in a funny way that makes it more interesting rather than less. I say do it - the worst thing that could happen is that I will buy you a beer (or two, or three) and there are certainly worse places to have beer than Milwaukee! |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ~~~~ Permanently OPEN!! Ryan, Nicole, and Jason - fantastic racing - really fun and motivational to read the race reports! Ben, IIRC you were up for the Wisconsin Triterium (sp?) correct? If so I have had a few midwestern friends that have bragged on that race as a real toughy with KOMs and everything. How did it go? Sorry I have been AWOL from the group - after a solid and consistent 7 months I took a fairly unstructured training month during June (partly planned, but mostly caused by a lot of work/family/play travel). This past weekend I kicked off my next training block with a good-sized regional race in Chattanooga and somehow managed to win the AG despite the hurky-jerky training for the past month. Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ~~~~ Permanently OPEN!! Buffalo Spring 70.3 Race Report -- as per usual, it's wordy Cliffs notes version: swim was okay, but I was in a bit of a mental funk....bike started well, but my power slipped throughout the ride to 8-10 watts less than I'd originally planned for....run started great (had a solid negative split), but hit a wall at mile 11 that I'm still trying to wrap my brain around. So if anyone has the mental fortitude to read through the whole thing and provide any feedback about why I haven't managed to hold my planned power or what might have caused me to hit the wall on the run, I'd appreciate it (here or on the RR). |

If so I have had a few midwestern friends that have bragged on that race as a real toughy with KOMs and everything. How did it go? Yeah, tough day. Really flat performance on everything. Swim felt fine, but was like 25:22. Bike ended up being ~85% though I was pushing for quite a bit higher. Only had the road bike again. They have a KOM setup within the race up Observatory, but I didn't go for it thinking I wanted a steadier race. I probably should have tried as that might have gone well since it was only 2 minutes or so. Not sure I would have gotten it as there are some very fast guys in here. Winner races pro. Overall the course does have over 1800 ft of climbing to it. Lots of speed killing hills that momentum doesn't really clear. Run was horrible. Usually I do start slow and get faster over the first few miles, but this was ridiculous and never got better. Just writing it off and moving on. |
